Chapter 7: The Files Hidden In His Office
I stared at the words until they stopped looking real.
*She knows too much.*
My daughter’s name was written above it.
Not a diagnosis.
Not a medical note.
A warning.
I felt my hands go numb.
For a moment, I wanted to believe there was another explanation.
Maybe Daniel had a reason.
Maybe there was something I didn’t understand.
That was the same excuse I had been making for months.
For years.
But excuses didn’t explain a locked drawer full of secret files.
I pulled the folder closer.
Inside were pages of medical records.
Maya’s name was printed across the top.
Blood tests.
Doctor notes.
Appointment dates.
My eyes moved across the pages.
Then I stopped.
The date at the bottom made my heart drop.
The test had been done six weeks earlier.
Six weeks.
Before Maya collapsed.
Before I begged her to tell me what was wrong.
Before I took her to the hospital.
Daniel already knew.
I grabbed the next page.
A note was written in his handwriting.
*Monitor symptoms. Do not alarm mother.*
My chest tightened.
Do not alarm mother.
Like I was the problem.
Like protecting me meant hiding my daughter’s suffering.
I kept searching.
There were more folders.
One for Rachel.
One for another woman I didn’t recognize.
One for someone named Olivia.
Each folder contained medical information.
Each one had notes.
Questions.
Observations.
Daniel had been collecting people’s private struggles like evidence.
But why?
My phone suddenly rang.
I almost dropped it.
It was Emily.
“Did you find them?””
I looked around the office.
“Yes.””
Her voice became quiet.
“Then you know.””
“I know he kept records.””
“No.””
A pause.
“You know he planned things.””
I sat down.
“What do you mean?””
Emily took a breath.
“Daniel always needed control.””
“That doesn’t explain this.””
“It started with Rachel.””
I looked at the folder.
“Tell me.””
Emily was silent for a few seconds.
Then she began.
“Rachel was smart. She noticed things other people ignored.””
“What things?””
“Money missing. Lies. Fake appointments.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Fake appointments?””
“Yes.””
Emily’s voice trembled.
“She discovered Daniel was changing information about her health.””
I felt sick.
“Changing?””
“She said doctors kept telling her she was fine because the information they received didn’t match what she told them.””
I looked at Maya’s folder.
The room started spinning.
“Are you saying he manipulated her medical records?””
“I’m saying Rachel believed he did.””
“Believed?””
“Because she never got the chance to prove it.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What happened to her?””
Emily exhaled slowly.
“Daniel told everyone she ran away.””
“But you don’t believe that.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Another pause.
“Because the last person Rachel called was me.””
My heart stopped.
“What did she say?””
Emily’s voice became barely a whisper.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, check Daniel’s office.’”
I looked at the drawer.
The folders.
The proof sitting right in front of me.
“What happened after that?””
“I was scared.””
The honesty in her voice surprised me.
“I was Daniel’s sister. I thought I could handle him.””
“You couldn’t?””
“No.””
A long silence followed.
Then Emily said:
“He destroyed anyone who threatened his image.””
I looked at Maya’s folder again.
Suddenly, the note made sense.
She knows too much.
Maya wasn’t just sick.
Maya had noticed something.
Something Daniel didn’t want discovered.
I flipped through her records faster.
Then I found something strange.
A page was missing.
There was a gap between two dates.
A missing medical report.
I searched the drawer.
Nothing.
Then I noticed an envelope taped underneath the desk.
My heart started pounding.
Inside was a single photograph.
It was Maya.
But she wasn’t alone.
She was sitting in a doctor’s office.
A doctor I didn’t recognize.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten message.
*She heard what Rachel said.*
I stared at the words.
My daughter had heard something.
Something connected to Rachel.
Something Daniel had been desperate to hide.
Then my phone received a message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*Your husband knows you found the files. Leave before he comes home.*
I looked toward the front door.

Because at that exact moment…
I heard Daniel’s car pulling into the driveway.
