Chapter 6: The Truth My Father Took To His Grave
Nobody spoke.
The basement felt smaller with every second.
The only sound was the faint hum of the old heater in the corner.
I stared at the DNA report.
The paper was old.
Yellowed.
But the words were clear.
*Paternity confirmed.*
My hands started shaking.
Not because I doubted the truth.
Because I finally understood how long it had been stolen from me.
Eighteen years.
A lifetime.
Marcus stood beside me.
His eyes were fixed on the document.
“He knew?””
I nodded.
“My father knew.””
Marcus looked away.
For a moment, he looked younger.
Not eighteen.
Not almost an adult.
Just a kid who wanted to know why someone never came looking.
“He knew I existed,” Marcus whispered.
I swallowed.
“Yes.””
“And he still let me grow up without you.””
I had no defense.
Because there wasn’t one.
Laura stepped closer.
“I’m sorry.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You were trying to protect me.””
She nodded.
“I thought if I kept you away from that family, you would be safe.””
“But I lost him.””
The words broke her.
And they broke me too.
Emily moved beside Marcus.
She didn’t say anything.
She just placed her hand on his shoulder.
A small gesture.
But it meant everything.
Then I noticed something else inside the folder.
A second envelope.
My name was written on it.
Not my father’s handwriting.
Someone else’s.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
The first line made my heart stop.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, then I failed to keep the truth buried.*
I recognized the handwriting.
My father.
I kept reading.
*I did what I believed was necessary.*
My jaw tightened.
Necessary.
That was the word he always used.
*You were young. You would have thrown away your future for a woman who would have exposed everything.*
I looked at Laura.
Her face was pale.
The letter continued.
*I gave Laura money to leave. I told her you wanted nothing to do with her child.*
My chest tightened.
He paid her?
He destroyed our lives with a lie.
But then I reached the final paragraph.
And it changed everything.
*But there is something I never told anyone. The money I gave Laura was not only to make her disappear. It was because someone else wanted her gone. Someone who knew what she had discovered.*
I stopped.
Someone else?
I read the final sentence.
*If anything happens to me, look for the man who helped me cover my mistake. He knows where the rest of the evidence is.*
A name was written underneath.
Robert Hayes.
I looked up.
“Robert lied.””
Laura stepped closer.
“What?””
“He knew more than he said.””
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone stared.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
But it wasn’t Robert.
It was someone I never expected.
Someone who had been gone for years.
“Daniel,” the voice said.
My blood turned cold.
Because the person on the other end was supposed to be dead.
May you like
And then the voice whispered:
“Your father wasn’t the only one who wanted Marcus hidden.””
