Chapter 14: The Sister Who Remembered
We spent the next hour trying to find Sophia.
Not because we knew where she was.
Because for the first time, we had a name.
And a name meant someone existed.
Someone had survived.
Someone had spent years carrying a secret that wasn’t hers.
Clara gave us one more piece of information.
“She was adopted.””
“By who?”” I asked.
She hesitated.
“Your father arranged it.””
My stomach tightened.
“So even her new life was controlled by him?””
Clara nodded.
“He wanted her far away.””
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“Of course he did.””
I looked at him.
He wasn’t angry anymore.
He was exhausted.
Like he had finally reached the end of a road he never wanted to walk.
Marcus sat beside Emily.
Neither of them spoke much.
They were watching everything unfold.
Three children.
Three different stories.
One man responsible for all of them.
But I couldn’t let anger control me.
Not anymore.
I had spent too many years living inside someone else’s lies.
We tracked Sophia through old records.
It took hours.
Finally, we found an address.
A small town two hours away.
Nobody wanted to come.
Not because they didn’t care.
Because everyone understood this was something I needed to do.
Alone.
When I arrived, I stood outside the house for almost ten minutes.
I didn’t know what to say.
How do you introduce yourself to someone whose entire life was hidden from you?
I knocked.
The door opened.
A woman stood there.
Late twenties.
Dark hair.
The same eyes as my father.
The same eyes as mine.
She stared at me.
And immediately knew.
“You’re Daniel.””
I couldn’t speak.
She smiled sadly.
“I always wondered when you would come.””
My heart broke.
“You knew about me?””
She nodded.
“My adoptive mother told me.””
I stepped back.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you find me?””
Her expression changed.
“Because I was told you didn’t want me.””
The sentence felt like a knife.
Another child.
Another lie.
“I would have wanted you.””
She looked away.
“Everyone says that after they find out.””
I deserved that.
I stood there silently.
Then she asked:
“Why now?””
I swallowed.
“Because I found out my father erased you.””
She laughed softly.
“He erased everyone.””
The truth of that sentence hurt.
Sophia invited me inside.
On the wall were photographs.
Her childhood.
Her graduation.
Her life.
A life I had missed.
A life my father had stolen from both of us.
“I have something for you,” she said.
She walked to a cabinet and removed a box.
Inside were letters.
Hundreds of them.
“What are these?””
“Letters my father sent.””
I looked at her.
“Your adoptive father?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
My chest tightened.
“My father?””
She nodded.
“Your father wrote to me every year.””
I stared.
“What?””
“He never sent them.””
“Why?””
Sophia looked at me.
“Because he was afraid.””
I opened one.
The first line destroyed me.
*My daughter, I think about you every day.*
My hands shook.
“He regretted it?””
Sophia nodded.
“At the end.””
I looked up.
“But he still did it.””
“Yes.””
She sat down.
“Regret doesn’t erase damage.””
Those words stayed with me.
Because they were true.
Then she handed me one final envelope.
“This one was different.””
I opened it.
Inside was a note.
Only three sentences.
*Daniel will find out eventually.*
*Robert knows where everything is hidden.*
*If Sophia ever meets her brother, tell them both the truth.*
I looked at Sophia.
“Brother?””
Her face changed.
“What?””
The room went quiet.
Because she didn’t know.
I realized something.
She had never been told about Adrian.
Or Marcus.
I took a breath.
“You have two brothers.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Two?””
I nodded.
And then my phone rang.
Robert.
I answered.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You found Sophia.””
I looked around the room.
“How?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I’ve been waiting for all of you to find each other.””
My blood ran cold.
“What do you want?””
He laughed softly.
“The truth.””
“You’ve spent years hiding it.””
“No, Daniel.””
His voice became darker.
“I spent years protecting it.””
Then he said:
“Your father wasn’t the only person who made sacrifices.””
The call ended.
May you like
And Sophia whispered:
“He’s coming.””
