Chapter 11: The Brother In The Shadows
I drove to Evelyn’s house alone.
I didn’t tell Emily.
I didn’t tell Marcus.
Not because I wanted to hide something.
Because I needed one moment where my entire world wasn’t falling apart in front of everyone.
The address was in an old neighborhood on the other side of town.
Small houses.
Quiet streets.
The kind of place where people lived ordinary lives.
But I knew better now.
Ordinary was just another word for secrets nobody had discovered yet.
When Evelyn opened the door, I immediately saw the resemblance.
Not in her.
In the man standing behind her.
He was around my age.
Dark hair.
Same eyes as my father.
My stomach dropped.
“Daniel,” Evelyn whispered.
I couldn’t stop staring.
The man looked at me.
“You’re him.””
My voice was barely audible.
“Who are you?””
He stepped forward.
“My name is Adrian.””
The name felt strange.
But his face didn’t.
Because I had seen those features every morning in the mirror.
Evelyn looked away.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I looked at her.
“When?””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“When your father died.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone wanted to tell me after it was too late.””
Nobody answered.
Adrian crossed his arms.
“You hate me already?””
I looked at him.
“I don’t know you.””
He nodded.
“That’s the point.””
His words carried anger.
“You got the family. The business. The respect.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“My father chose you.””
The sentence hit me.
“Your father?””
“Our father.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
I had spent my entire life believing I was an only child.
But there was someone else.
Someone my father had hidden.
Someone who carried the same pain I did.
“Why did he hide you?””
Adrian laughed.
“Because he was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Of having two families.””
I looked down.
The pieces were becoming clearer.
My father had spent his life controlling the truth.
Changing stories.
Erasing people.
Adrian stepped closer.
“You think he loved you?””
The question angered me.
“Don’t.””
“No, Daniel. You need to hear this.””
His voice became sharper.
“He didn’t protect you from Marcus’s mother because he cared.””
I stared at him.
“He protected you because you were his legacy.””
The words hurt because part of me feared they were true.
Adrian continued.
“He wanted you to inherit everything.””
“Everything?””
“The company. The money. The reputation.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“And you?””
She lowered her eyes.
“He promised he would take care of us.””
“But he didn’t.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Adrian smiled without happiness.
“He abandoned us too.””
For the first time, I saw something familiar in him.
Not anger.
Pain.
The same pain Marcus carried.
The same pain I carried.
Different stories.
Same wound.
I sat down.
“My father destroyed three families.””
Adrian looked at me.
“Four.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Because there’s one more person you don’t know about.””
My blood went cold.
“No.””
Adrian nodded.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“Another child?””
“No.””
He looked directly at me.
“Someone who helped him.””
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From Robert.
*You finally met Adrian. Good. Now ask him why your father trusted him more than you.*
I showed Adrian.
His expression changed.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
“Why?””
Because for the first time, Adrian looked afraid.
“Because Robert knows you’re here.””
A second message appeared.
This one had a photo.
A photo of me standing outside Evelyn’s house.
Taken moments earlier.
May you like
Underneath it were three words.
*You are next.*
