Chapter 12: The Last Piece Of Evidence

We left Evelyn’s house immediately.

Not because we were running.

Because we finally understood something.

Someone had been one step ahead of us the entire time.

Robert wasn’t reacting to our discoveries.

He was watching us make them.

The question was why.

And how much did he know?

Adrian sat in my car beside me.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Two brothers who had spent our entire lives as strangers.

Both lied to.

Both manipulated.

Both searching for the same truth.

Finally, Adrian broke the silence.

“You really didn’t know about me?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He nodded slowly.

“I believe you.””

The words surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because if you knew, you would have looked for me.””

I didn’t answer.

Because he was right.

I would have.

I spent seventeen years searching for Marcus without even knowing I was searching.

How could I have ignored another child?

We drove to Michael’s apartment.

If anyone understood my father’s secrets, it was him.

But when we arrived, the door was already open.

I stepped back.

Something was wrong.

“Stay behind me,” I said.

Adrian looked at me.

“You always do that?””

“Do what?””

“Protect people.””

I frowned.

He gave a small smile.

“Maybe that’s why Dad chose you.””

I walked inside.

The apartment was empty.

Not destroyed.

Not broken.

Just abandoned.

Like someone left in a hurry.

On the table was a folder.

My name.

Again.

Inside was a single page.

A handwritten note.

*Daniel,*

*If you found this, then Robert has already moved against you.*

My heart raced.

Michael knew.

*Your father trusted Robert because he believed Robert was loyal. He was wrong.*

I kept reading.

*But there is something you need to understand. Robert did not create these lies alone.*

I looked at Adrian.

He was reading over my shoulder.

The next line made both of us freeze.

*Someone inside your family helped him.*

Not my father.

Not Robert.

Someone else.

A family member.

I turned the page.

Nothing.

The rest had been removed.

Someone had torn out the final section.

Adrian picked up the paper.

“There should be more.””

I nodded.

“Someone took it.””

Then I noticed something on the floor.

A torn piece of paper.

Half hidden under the table.

I grabbed it.

Only a few words remained.

*…the child who was never supposed to survive…*

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time I answered immediately.

“Who are you?””

A woman’s voice responded.

“You need to stop searching.””

I looked around the apartment.

“Who are you?””

“You already know me.””

I froze.

“No.””

The woman laughed softly.

“You just don’t remember.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Who is it?””

The voice continued.

“I was there the night Marcus was born.””

My heart stopped.

“You were at the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m your mother’s sister.””

I felt the world shift.

“My aunt?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you calling me?””

The woman’s voice became cold.

“Because your father wasn’t hiding one child.””

A silence.

“He was hiding what happened to another.””

I gripped the phone.

“What happened?””

Her answer came quietly.

“Daniel…”

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your family has a child who was declared dead.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because suddenly, every secret had a new shape.

Every lie had a deeper reason.

May you like

And somewhere in the past…

Someone had been erased completely.
