Chapter 5: The Secret In The Basement

The photograph sat on my kitchen table like evidence in a crime I didn’t remember committing.

I picked it up again.

Then again.

As if staring at it long enough would reveal something hidden.

But it didn’t.

It only showed the past.

Me.

Laura’s apartment.

A night I had almost forgotten.

Almost.

“You were there,” Marcus said quietly.

I looked at him.

“What?””

“That night.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“So why don’t you remember?””

The question hit harder than I expected.

Because he was right.

I remembered pieces.

The argument.

The rain.

The feeling of losing everything.

But the photograph showed something I didn’t remember.

A second person.

A shadow near the apartment entrance.

Someone watching.

I picked up my phone and searched through old contacts.

There was one person who might know.

My father’s closest friend.

A man who worked with him for over thirty years.

Robert Hayes.

I called.

He answered after three rings.

“Daniel?””

His voice sounded surprised.

“Robert, I need to ask you something.””

A pause.

“About what?””

“My father.””

The silence that followed told me everything.

“You know something.””

“Daniel…”

“No. Please. I need the truth.””

Robert sighed.

“I was hoping you would never find out.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Find out what?””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“Your father made a mistake.””

I looked around the room.

At Laura.

At Marcus.

At Emily.

“A mistake?””

“He thought he was protecting you.””

My voice became colder.

“He stole my son.””

Robert didn’t argue.

And that scared me more.

“He believed Laura would ruin your life.””

I laughed bitterly.

“By loving me?””

“No.””

Robert’s voice dropped.

“By exposing what your father had done.””

The room went silent.

“What are you talking about?””

“I shouldn’t be telling you this.””

“But you are.””

Another long pause.

Then:

“Your father had debts.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Serious ones.””

I looked at the notebook upstairs.

The pieces started connecting.

“He needed money.””

“Yes.””

“And Laura knew?””

“She found out.””

My stomach twisted.

“What did she find out?””

Robert didn’t answer immediately.

Then he whispered:

“She found documents proving your father had been using company money.””

My eyes widened.

My father wasn’t just controlling.

He was hiding something bigger.

“How does that involve Marcus?””

Robert’s voice became heavy.

“Because Laura threatened to expose him.””

I looked at her.

She shook her head.

“I never wanted revenge,” she said.

I put the phone on speaker.

“Tell her.””

Robert’s voice filled the room.

“Your father was afraid. He thought if Daniel stayed with Laura, she would eventually tell him everything.””

Laura closed her eyes.

“So he separated us.””

“Yes.””

Marcus looked away.

“So my entire life happened because someone wanted to protect a secret?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody needed to.

After the call ended, we sat in silence.

Then Emily spoke.

“Where are those documents now?””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The proof.””

She looked at me seriously.

“If your father hid something, he probably didn’t destroy it.””

She was right.

My father was careful.

Obsessive.

He kept everything.

Even things that could destroy him.

I went back upstairs.

This time, I searched deeper.

Behind old boxes.

Under broken furniture.

Inside locked containers.

Then I found something.

A small metal key.

Attached to it was a label.

*Basement Storage.*

My father had a private storage room beneath the house.

A place I had never entered.

I grabbed a flashlight.

Everyone followed me downstairs.

The basement door had always been locked.

I inserted the key.

It turned.

Slowly.

The door opened with a long creak.

Inside was a room full of boxes.

Documents.

Old files.

And photographs.

Marcus stepped forward.

“What is all this?””

I moved toward a shelf.

Then stopped.

Because sitting in the center of the room was a folder with my name on it.

And underneath mine was another name.

*Marcus Bennett.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a DNA test.

Not a new one.

An old one.

A test dated seventeen years ago.

My father had already known.

He had already confirmed Marcus was my son.

And the final page contained a handwritten note.

*“Daniel must never find out.””*
