Chapter 2: The Secret I Buried

I stared at Laura’s name glowing on my phone screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even the sound of the rain against the windows seemed to disappear.

“Dad,” Emily whispered, “who is that?””

I swallowed hard.

“It’s Marcus’s mother.””

Marcus immediately looked toward the phone.

His expression changed from confusion to fear.

“Why would she be calling you?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because the truth was, I didn’t know if I wanted one.

Seventeen years ago, Laura had been the person I loved most in the world.

We met when I was twenty-one and she was twenty.

She was fearless.

The kind of person who danced in grocery store aisles and laughed so loudly strangers would turn around.

For a while, I believed we were going to spend our entire lives together.

Then everything fell apart.

I remembered the last night I saw her.

We were standing outside her apartment during a storm.

“You never listen to me,” she had said.

“I’m trying to understand,” I replied.

“No, you’re trying to decide what you want to believe.””

Those words stayed with me.

Because I never knew what she meant.

The next morning, she was gone.

I convinced myself she had left because she didn’t love me enough to stay.

But maybe I had never known the full story.

My phone kept ringing.

Finally, I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a voice I hadn’t heard in almost two decades said my name.

“Daniel.””

My knees nearly gave out.

“Laura.””

Marcus looked at me.

Emily grabbed the edge of the couch.

“Is he there?”” Laura asked.

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.””

A long pause followed.

Then she whispered:

“I was afraid this day would come.””

The words hit harder than anything else.

“You knew?”” I asked.

“You knew about him?””

“I knew Marcus existed,” she said quietly.

“But I never knew he would meet you like this.””

My voice rose.

“Like this? Laura, he walked into my house with my daughter.””

“I know.””

“You knew there was a chance?””

Another silence.

Then she said something that made my entire body go cold.

“I always knew he had your eyes.””

I looked at Marcus.

He was staring at me now.

“What did she say?”” he asked.

I couldn’t answer.

Because every possible explanation sounded impossible.

Emily stood up.

“Dad, please tell us what’s happening.””

I looked at my daughter.

The child I had raised.

The person I loved more than anything.

And beside her stood a young man who might have been another child I never got the chance to know.

“I think Marcus might be my son,” I said.

Emily covered her mouth.

Marcus stepped backward.

For a moment, nobody looked angry.

They just looked broken.

“I didn’t know,” Marcus said softly.

I immediately shook my head.

“Neither did I.””

He looked at the photograph again.

“My mom told me my father didn’t want me.””

The sentence felt like a knife.

Because if he was telling the truth, then someone had stolen seventeen years from both of us.

“Laura,” I said into the phone, “why did you let me believe you left?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because I thought you left me.””

“What?””

“I came to your apartment the morning after our fight,” she said.

“I was going to tell you I was pregnant.””

I stopped breathing.

“But your place was empty.””

My forehead tightened.

“That’s impossible. I never moved.””

“Yes, you did.””

“No, I didn’t.””

Laura’s voice became quieter.

“Daniel… who told you to leave?””

I felt a strange coldness move through me.

Because suddenly, I remembered something.

A conversation.

A person standing outside my apartment.

Someone who claimed Laura had made her choice.

Someone who told me she never wanted to see me again.

But I had never questioned it.

I had been too hurt.

Too angry.

Too young.

“Laura,” I whispered, “who came to my apartment that morning?””

She didn’t answer.

“Laura?””

Her voice cracked.

“The person who destroyed our family.””

Marcus looked at me.

“Who was it?””

And then Laura finally said the name.

A name I recognized instantly.

May you like

A name that meant the secret wasn’t just between me and Laura.

Someone else had spent seventeen years hiding the truth.
