Chapter 9: Locker 614
The next morning, I stood outside a private storage facility on the other side of Atlanta.
I barely slept.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Sarah’s face on that video.
I heard her voice.
I heard the fear.
And I kept wondering how many people had lied to me.
The locker key felt heavy in my pocket.
Officer Harris stood beside me.
“You’re sure you want to do this?””
I looked at the metal door in front of us.
“No.””
He raised an eyebrow.
“But I’m doing it anyway.””
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a small box.
Nothing else.
No money.
No dramatic evidence.
Just a wooden box covered in dust.
I picked it up.
My hands shook.
Sarah’s handwriting was on the top.
*For Richard.*
I almost couldn’t breathe.
I opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
And one envelope.
The envelope had my name.
I opened it first.
*Richard,*
*If you found this, it means the people I feared were right. They found a way into your life.*
I swallowed.
*I need you to understand something. I never lied because I didn’t love you. I lied because I was trying to protect you.*
My eyes blurred.
I kept reading.
*Lily is your daughter. But before she was born, I discovered something about my family that changed everything.*
I turned the page.
*My father did not leave behind a normal inheritance. He created a trust that could only be accessed by my child.*
The twelve million dollars.
*But there was a condition.*
I continued.
*The money would only be released if Lily remained under the care of someone who truly loved her.*
My heart tightened.
Someone who truly loved her.
*That is why they came after you.*
A noise behind me made me turn.
Nobody was there.
I kept reading.
*Vanessa learned about the trust through Marcus. But she was not the only person involved.*
My heartbeat increased.
*The person controlling everything is someone closer than you think.*
I looked at Officer Harris.
“Read this.””
He stepped closer.
Then I turned the page.
The next sentence made my blood freeze.
*Richard, the person who betrayed me was not Vanessa.*
I stopped.
My hands trembled.
The final line was written darker than the others.
Almost like Sarah had pressed the pen into the paper.
*It was your brother, Michael.*
I dropped the letter.
My brother.
The man who stood beside me at Sarah’s funeral.
The man who called Lily “his little princess.””
The man who told me he was happy I found love again.
Officer Harris looked at me.
“Do you have a brother?””
I couldn’t answer.
My phone rang.
The screen showed his name.
Michael.
For several seconds, I just stared.
Then I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then his voice.
Calm.
Almost cheerful.
“Richard.””
I couldn’t speak.
He continued.
“I was wondering when you’d find the box.””
My blood ran cold.
“How did you know?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I was the one who put it there.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
His voice changed.
No more kindness.
No more pretending.
“Because Sarah made one mistake.””
“What mistake?””
“She trusted you.””
The call went silent.
Then Michael whispered:
May you like
“And now you’re going to learn why Lily was never supposed to belong to you.””
The line went dead.
