Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Door

The hallway went silent.

Every person in that room froze.

The voice came again.

“Richard.””

I knew that voice.

But my mind refused to accept it.

Slowly, the officers moved toward the stairs.

I followed behind them.

“Stay back,” one officer ordered.

But I couldn’t.

Not when my entire life had just been turned upside down.

The man standing at the top of my stairs stepped into the light.

And I felt the world disappear.

It was David.

My old friend.

Sarah’s former business partner.

The man who had stood beside me at Sarah’s funeral.

The man who hugged Lily and promised he would always look after her.

The man I trusted.

“What are you doing here?”” I whispered.

David looked at me with tired eyes.

“I came because you finally deserved the truth.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“You…”

David looked at her.

“You thought you could hide forever?””

The officers immediately stepped between us.

“Who are you?””

David raised his hands.

“My name is David Miller. I have information about the documents, the inheritance, and what happened before Sarah died.””

I stared at him.

“You knew?””

His eyes dropped.

“Yes.””

That one word hurt more than anything.

“You knew what happened to Sarah?””

David swallowed.

“I knew she was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

Then Lily.

“Of people trying to take her daughter.””

My hands tightened.

“Stop speaking in riddles.””

David nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

He reached into his coat and pulled out a small box.

“I should have come sooner.””

He handed it to the officer.

Inside was a flash drive.

“What is that?”” I asked.

“Everything Sarah saved before she died.””

Vanessa suddenly shouted.

“No!””

Everyone turned.

For the first time all night, Vanessa looked truly terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

David looked at her.

“That reaction tells him everything.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

The officer took the flash drive.

“Mr. Miller, you’ll need to explain your involvement.””

David nodded.

“I will.””

Then he looked at me.

“But first, Richard needs to know why Sarah was investigating Vanessa.””

I looked at Lily.

She was still sitting on the couch.

Still holding her rabbit.

Still trying to understand why all these adults were fighting.

I walked over and knelt beside her.

“Baby, can you go with Officer Harris for a little while?””

She looked scared.

“Are you coming?””

I forced myself to smile.

“Yes.””

She held my hand.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

After she left the room, I turned back.

“Tell me.””

David took a deep breath.

“Six years ago, Sarah discovered Vanessa wasn’t just after money.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What else?””

“She was after Lily.””

I felt my entire body go cold.

“Why?””

David looked at the letter.

“Because Lily was the key.””

“The key to what?””

David hesitated.

Then said:

“To the Hart family trust.””

I looked at Emily.

She went pale.

“The Hart family trust?””

David nodded.

“Sarah discovered that Lily’s biological grandfather left behind a hidden inheritance.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

Sarah had never told me about any inheritance.

David continued.

“Because she didn’t know the full amount until shortly before she died.””

“How much?””

He looked at me.

“Nearly twelve million dollars.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa whispered:

“Lies.””

David ignored her.

“Sarah was trying to move the money into a protected account for Lily.””

I looked at the documents on the table.

“And Vanessa found out.””

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“She killed Sarah?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Finally, David spoke.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“Because Sarah’s accident was never fully investigated.””

Emily stepped forward.

“I tried.””

Everyone looked at her.

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“The police said there was no evidence.””

David nodded.

“But Sarah left evidence.””

He pointed toward the flash drive.

“Before she died, she recorded a message.””

My heart stopped.

“A message?””

“Yes.””

David looked at the officer.

“We need to watch it.””

The flash drive was connected.

A video file appeared.

The date was three days before Sarah’s death.

I pressed play.

For a few seconds, there was only darkness.

Then Sarah appeared on the screen.

My breath caught.

She looked tired.

Scared.

But she smiled.

“Richard…”

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice again after six years broke something inside me.

“If you’re watching this, I failed to protect you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

Sarah continued.

“I need you to know something about Vanessa.””

The video suddenly glitched.

Then Sarah’s face changed.

Not fear.

Shock.

As if someone had entered the room.

She looked away from the camera.

And whispered:

“Oh my God…”

The screen froze.

Then went black.

The final audio played.

A man’s voice.

A voice that none of us expected.

“Sarah, you weren’t supposed to find out.””

I looked at David.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Because everyone in the room recognized the voice.

It wasn’t Marcus.

It wasn’t David.

May you like

It was someone else.

Someone much closer.
