Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I should have closed the door.
Every instinct told me to.
But I didn’t.
I stood there staring at Marcus, the man whose name had haunted my house for months without me even knowing.
He looked nothing like the picture Vanessa once showed me.
The picture of a man she claimed had abandoned her and disappeared.
That man looked reckless.
Broken.
Dangerous.
The man standing in front of me looked prepared.
Like he had been waiting for this exact moment.
“What are you doing here?”” I asked.
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Helping you.””
I almost laughed.
“Helping me?””
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Marcus, leave.””
His eyes moved to her.
“You told him?””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I looked between them.
“You two have been talking behind my back.””
Marcus shrugged.
“You married her without knowing everything.””
My jaw tightened.
“You don’t get to stand here and act like the victim.””
“I’m not.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.
“I’m the person who can prove what she did.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Don’t.””
Marcus ignored her.
“Open it.””
I didn’t move.
“What is this?””
“Evidence.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Richard, don’t listen to him.””
I looked at her.
“You had six months to tell me the truth.””
She stopped.
I took the folder.
Inside were printed messages.
Bank records.
Photos.
Documents.
My hands shook as I flipped through them.
The first message was between Vanessa and Marcus.
The date was from seven months earlier.
Before the money disappeared.
Before the property transfer.
Before everything.
Vanessa had written:
“We need to move quickly before Richard checks the accounts.””
I felt like the air disappeared.
I kept reading.
Marcus had responded:
“Then get him to sign the house papers.””
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Richard…”
I raised my hand.
Not to hit her.
Just to stop her from speaking.
“Why?””
The question came out quietly.
“Why would you do this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””
“That’s what people say when they get caught.””
She shook her head.
“No. You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at Lily.
“I was trying to protect my children.””
I looked at Ethan.
The boy who had risked his mother’s anger to show me the truth.
“You protected them by hurting my daughter?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You made choices.””
The room went silent.
Marcus watched everything.
Almost like he was studying me.
Then he spoke.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pulled out another document.
“This wasn’t just about the money.””
I took it.
It was a custody agreement.
My name was on it.
But again, the signature wasn’t mine.
“What is this?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“She planned to leave with your house, your money, and your daughter.””
My heart stopped.
“My daughter?””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
Marcus pointed at the paper.
“Read the last page.””
I turned it over.
There was a section about relocation.
A plan to move Lily out of state.
Without telling me.
Without my permission.
My daughter grabbed my hand.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
She was crying.
“Are you sending me away?””
The question destroyed me.
I knelt beside her.
“Never.””
She wrapped her arms around me.
“I thought you were mad at me.””
My chest hurt.
“Why would I be mad at you?””
She whispered:
“Because Mommy said you would get tired of taking care of me.””
I looked up at Vanessa.
Her face went pale.
“Did you say that to her?””
“No.””
But her voice was weak.
Not convincing.
Ethan suddenly walked into the room.
He was holding something else.
A small black notebook.
“Mr. Richard…”
Vanessa turned.
“Ethan, don’t.””
The boy looked scared.
But he handed it to me.
“She wrote everything down.””
I opened the notebook.
Inside were dates.
Amounts of money.
Names.
Plans.
And one sentence written at the bottom of the final page.
A sentence that made my blood run cold.
“After Richard signs the final papers, Marcus will take care of the rest.””
I slowly looked at Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
“Take care of what?””
Neither of them answered.
The silence was broken by my phone ringing.
I looked down.
It was an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But then I noticed the message preview.
It said:
*Richard, if you want to know why your wife chose Marcus over you, answer this call.*
I stared at the screen.
Then the phone rang again.
And this time, beneath the unknown number, a name appeared.
A name I hadn’t seen in six years.
May you like
The name of my late wife’s sister.
The woman who disappeared after Lily’s mother died.
