Chapter 10: The Brother I Never Knew

For a full minute, I stood frozen with the phone still pressed against my ear.

The call had ended.

But Michael’s words stayed.

*Lily was never supposed to belong to you.*

I looked at Officer Harris.

“My brother knew.””

He didn’t ask who.

He already understood.

“Michael?””

I nodded.

The name felt strange coming out of my mouth.

My own brother.

The person I shared a childhood with.

The person who held my daughter after Sarah died.

The person who told me I needed to move forward.

The same person who had apparently been hiding the biggest secret of my life.

Officer Harris carefully folded the letter.

“We need to bring him in.””

I stared at the evidence box.

“Not yet.””

His expression hardened.

“Mr. Collins—”

“I need to know why.””

I wasn’t defending Michael.

I wasn’t protecting him.

I needed answers.

Because every person I trusted had a hidden side.

And I was done being the last person to know.

Michael agreed to meet me that afternoon.

Not at his house.

Not at mine.

A quiet coffee shop downtown.

A place where he thought we could talk without anyone watching.

He arrived ten minutes late.

That alone told me something.

The Michael I knew was always early.

Always organized.

Always prepared.

But this Michael looked different.

Older.

Tired.

Like he had been carrying a secret for years.

He sat across from me.

“Richard.””

I didn’t respond.

He looked down.

“You found Sarah’s letter.””

“You knew about it.””

“Yes.””

My jaw tightened.

“How long?””

He took a breath.

“Since before Sarah died.””

The anger hit instantly.

“You knew my wife was scared?””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone was trying to take Lily’s money?””

“Yes.””

“You knew Vanessa was involved?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I pushed my chair back slightly.

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I asked:

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because I was involved.””

The world seemed to go quiet.

“Involved how?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I helped Sarah’s father build the trust.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The Hart family trust wasn’t just about money. It was created to protect Sarah’s child.””

I stared at him.

“Then why would you help someone steal from it?””

Michael looked away.

“Because I thought I was helping someone else.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

That silence made me angry.

“Who, Michael?””

Finally, he whispered:

“Me.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“You wanted Lily’s inheritance?””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

Almost desperately.

“I wanted control.””

I stared at him.

He continued.

“After our parents died, I spent years building a company. I lost everything.””

“That’s not my problem.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“But then I discovered Sarah’s family had millions hidden away.””

“And you thought my daughter was your solution?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Michael leaned closer.

“I thought I could borrow from it.””

I laughed.

A bitter, broken laugh.

“You stole from a child.””

“I was going to repay it.””

“People always say that.””

He looked ashamed.

“I made a deal with Vanessa.””

There it was.

The truth.

“The same Vanessa who abused my daughter?””

His face changed.

“I didn’t know about that.””

“But you knew she was using Lily’s money.””

“Yes.””

I stood.

“I’m done.””

“Richard, wait.””

I stopped.

“Why did Sarah die?””

Michael’s face changed.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I wasn’t there.””

“But you know something.””

He looked down.

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

Michael hesitated.

Then said:

“That Vanessa wasn’t the person making the decisions.””

I froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at me.

“Vanessa was a follower.””

My heartbeat increased.

“Then who was controlling her?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And immediately went pale.

I noticed.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

The phone rang again.

I saw the name.

*Unknown Caller.*

Michael stood up.

“I have to go.””

I grabbed his arm.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“Richard, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

His voice dropped.

“She knows we’re talking.””

“Who?””

Michael looked terrified.

Then he whispered:

“The woman who started all of this.””

He pulled away.

And walked out.

I followed him to the door.

But he was already gone.

On the table, he had left something behind.

A photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Sarah.

Vanessa.

Marcus.

And one more person.

A person standing behind them.

Someone I recognized.

May you like

Someone I never expected.

My mother.
