Chapter 5: The Secret Sarah Left Behind

Nobody spoke.

The sentence hung in the air.

Sarah didn’t die in an accident.

For six years, I had lived with one painful memory.

The hospital.

The phone call.

The doctor’s expression.

The words that changed my life forever.

A car accident.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what I accepted.

Because I was too broken to question it.

Emily stepped inside and closed the door behind her.

She looked at Lily.

The tears came immediately.

“My little girl.””

Lily stared at her.

She barely remembered Emily.

But somehow, she knew.

Children always recognize kindness.

Emily slowly approached.

“Can I hug you?””

Lily looked at me.

I nodded.

Then my daughter walked into the arms of the woman who had disappeared from her life.

Emily cried against her hair.

“I’m so sorry.””

Vanessa watched them.

Her face showed fear.

Not sadness.

Fear.

I noticed.

“Tell me everything.””

Emily released Lily and looked at me.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“Yes.””

My voice was cold.

“You should have.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Emily placed the envelope on the table.

“Sarah found out Vanessa wasn’t just interested in you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She was interested in what Sarah left behind.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s ridiculous.””

Emily ignored her.

“Sarah discovered messages between Vanessa and Marcus.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“She knows.””

I looked at him.

“You were involved?””

He didn’t answer.

Emily opened the envelope.

Inside were printed photographs.

The first one showed Vanessa meeting Marcus outside a hotel.

The second showed them sitting together at a restaurant.

The third showed them looking at property documents.

My hands became cold.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Those prove nothing.””

Emily looked at her.

“They prove you lied.””

Vanessa’s voice became sharp.

“You don’t understand anything.””

“No,” Emily said.

“I understand exactly.””

The room became tense.

Emily turned toward me.

“Sarah called me three days before she died.””

I swallowed.

“What did she say?””

Emily’s eyes filled with pain.

“She said she was scared.””

“Of Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

I looked at my wife.

She looked away.

Emily continued.

“She told me she believed Vanessa was planning something.””

My voice became quiet.

“What something?””

Emily hesitated.

Then she answered.

“To get control of Lily’s inheritance.””

The words hurt even though I already suspected them.

I looked at Lily.

She was sitting on the couch, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Completely unaware that adults had been fighting over her future.

“Why didn’t Sarah tell me?””

Emily looked down.

“Because she thought you were already in danger.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She found out Vanessa had access to your accounts.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“How?””

Emily’s voice dropped.

“Because Vanessa was already planning to marry you before Sarah died.””

Silence.

I felt sick.

“No.””

Emily looked at me.

“Richard, I know it’s painful.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I refuse to believe Sarah knew all of this and said nothing.””

“She tried.””

Emily pulled out another paper.

“She wrote you a letter.””

My heart stopped.

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Emily looked at Vanessa.

And that was when I saw it.

The fear.

Pure fear.

Vanessa whispered:

“You don’t have it.””

Emily stared at her.

“You’re right.””

She looked at me.

“Because Vanessa took it.””

My entire body went numb.

“What?””

Emily nodded.

“After Sarah died, I came to your house. Vanessa was already there.””

I remembered.

The days after Sarah’s death were a blur.

Friends.

Family.

People entering and leaving.

I barely remembered anything.

“She told me she would give you the letter.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“But she never did.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is it?””

She didn’t answer.

“Where is Sarah’s letter?””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her purse.

Nobody expected it.

She ran toward the door.

But Marcus moved faster.

He blocked her path.

“Not this time.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re the reason I did all this!””

Marcus smiled.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“You did it because you thought you were smarter than everyone else.””

The police sirens could be heard outside.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Her face changed.

She knew it was over.

But then she smiled.

A small, terrifying smile.

“You still don’t understand.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a folded piece of paper.

And held it up.

“Sarah’s letter.””

My heart stopped.

“Give it to me.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

The police knocked on the door.

“Open up!””

Vanessa looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Before you read this, Richard…”

May you like

She smiled.

“You should know your wife had one more secret.””
