Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
Vanessa stared at me like she was trying to decide whether to lie or run.
The kitchen suddenly felt smaller.
Lily was still behind me, holding onto my shirt.
I kept looking at the document in my hand.
My house.
My signature.
A transfer of ownership.
To a man who wasn’t supposed to exist.
“Explain,” I said.
Vanessa swallowed.
“Richard, it’s not what you think.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those were the first words she chose.
“Then tell me what it is.””
She stepped forward.
“Can we talk privately?””
I looked at Lily.
“No.””
Vanessa frowned.
“This isn’t a conversation for children.””
I shook my head.
“My daughter has been living through this conversation every day.””
That made her angry.
“You’re acting like I abused her.””
I stared at the bread crumbs still sitting on the napkin.
“I found my six-year-old eating scraps while your children had a feast.””
Vanessa looked away.
For once, she had no answer.
I picked up the document again.
“Who helped you?””
“Nobody.””
“Then explain my signature.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Ethan quietly spoke.
“Mommy said Daddy Richard would never notice.””
Vanessa turned around.
“Ethan!””
The boy flinched.
But he continued.
“She said you were too busy working.””
My stomach twisted.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Your own son knows?””
“He doesn’t understand.””
Ethan lowered his eyes.
“Yes, I do.””
The room became silent.
I had never seen that child look afraid of anything before.
But now he looked terrified.
“Ethan,” I said gently, “what else did your mother tell you to hide?””
Vanessa stepped between us.
“Richard, stop questioning my son.””
“Why?””
“Because you’re making him uncomfortable.””
I looked at her.
“You were comfortable making Lily go hungry.””
Her face tightened.
That was when Chloe started crying.
“Mommy, are we in trouble?””
Vanessa immediately softened.
“No, sweetheart.””
The difference was obvious.
Her voice changed for her children.
It became warm.
Patient.
The same voice Lily deserved.
I felt something inside me collapse.
I walked into the living room and grabbed my laptop.
I needed proof.
Not anger.
Not accusations.
Proof.
I logged into every account I had access to.
The education fund.
The savings account.
The mortgage.
The house records.
The numbers were worse than I imagined.
Vanessa hadn’t just taken money.
She had been moving things around for months.
Small transfers.
Hidden payments.
Things I had missed because I trusted my wife.
Then I saw the attorney payment again.
Forty-two thousand dollars.
I searched the name.
My blood ran cold.
The attorney specialized in property disputes.
Why would Vanessa need a property attorney?
Unless…
“Richard.””
I looked up.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her face was different now.
Not angry.
Scared.
“You need to listen to me.””
I closed the laptop.
“I’m listening.””
She sat down.
“I made mistakes.””
“That’s not an explanation.””
“I was under pressure.””
“From who?””
She looked away.
That answer was louder than words.
“Vanessa.””
She whispered:
“Marcus.””
The name meant nothing to me.
Until she said the next sentence.
“My ex-husband.””
I stood frozen.
“The man you told me was dead?””
She closed her eyes.
“I thought he was gone.””
“But he isn’t.””
“No.””
Her voice became smaller.
“He came back.””
I felt a wave of disbelief.
“You’ve been in contact with him?””
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me more than another lie would have.
“For how long?””
She didn’t answer.
I stood.
“For how long?””
“Six months.””
Six months.
While I worked.
While I came home tired.
While I believed I was building a family.
She had been meeting the man she told me was gone forever.
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“He knew things about my past.””
“What things?””
She looked at Lily.
Then at Ethan.
Then whispered:
“He threatened to take my children.””
I stared at her.
“So you protected yourself by stealing from my daughter?””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“I was trying to fix everything.””
“By transferring my house?””
She had no answer.
A knock suddenly came from the front door.
Everyone froze.
Nobody was supposed to be coming over.
I walked toward it slowly.
Vanessa stood up.
“Richard, wait.””
But I opened the door.
A man was standing outside.
Older than I expected.
Calm.
Confident.
He looked directly at me.
Then smiled.
“Richard Collins?””
I didn’t answer.
He held out his hand.
“I’m Marcus.””
The man Vanessa said was dead.
He looked past me into the house.
Then his eyes landed on Lily.
May you like
And he said something that made my blood run cold.
“I see you finally found out what your wife did with your first family’s money.””
