Chapter 5: Sarah’s Hidden Evidence

Daniel’s hand never reached the recorder.

Mr. Collins moved it away first.

“Do not touch that.””

Daniel stopped.

His breathing was heavier now.

“I want to know what she meant.””

The lawyer looked at him.

“You will.””

The recording continued.

Sarah’s voice filled the room again.

“I found emails between Daniel and Olivia discussing my death.””

The air disappeared from my lungs.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“What?””

Daniel immediately shouted.

“That’s insane.””

But nobody looked at him.

Everyone was listening.

Sarah continued.

“I am not saying they caused anything. I am saying they were preparing for a life without me before I was even gone.””

My hands started shaking.

A life without me.

That was the part that hurt most.

Not just the cheating.

Not just the money.

They had already erased Sarah while she was still alive.

Mr. Collins paused the recording.

“We need to be careful with conclusions.””

Daniel nodded quickly.

“Yes. Exactly.””

But the lawyer continued.

“However, Sarah provided documents supporting her concerns.””

He opened another folder.

Inside were printed emails.

I watched Daniel’s face change.

“Where did she get those?””

Mr. Collins ignored the question.

“The messages show conversations regarding the house, finances, and Lily’s inheritance.””

Daniel stood.

“This is private.””

“No,” I said.

“This is about my sister.””

He looked at me.

“You always hated me.””

I stared at him.

“I hated watching you break her.””

That silenced him.

Mr. Collins handed me a copy.

I read the first page.

Olivia had written:

Once the divorce is final, the house will be ours.

My stomach turned.

Divorce.

Sarah never told us she had planned to leave.

Daniel replied:

I just need time. Lily needs stability.

I laughed quietly.

“Stability?””

Everyone looked at me.

“He used Lily as an excuse.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“Careful.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to threaten me in her house.””

The room became still.

Because it was no longer Daniel’s house.

Sarah had made sure of that.

Mr. Collins continued.

“Sarah had already started the legal process before her death.””

My heart stopped.

“She was leaving him?””

The lawyer nodded.

“She had scheduled a meeting with a divorce attorney.””

My mother covered her face.

“Why didn’t she tell us?””

I knew why.

Because it was Sarah.

She didn’t want to create chaos.

She didn’t want Lily caught between parents.

She carried everything alone.

Daniel sat down slowly.

For the first time, he looked smaller.

But then Olivia spoke.

“You said she wasn’t going to leave.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

“You said after you talked to her, she changed her mind.””

Daniel said nothing.

Olivia’s face changed.

“You lied to me too.””

That was the moment I realized something.

Daniel had spent years controlling everyone.

Sarah.

Olivia.

Even us.

He didn’t love people.

He managed them.

Mr. Collins placed another document on the table.

“This is the final section of Sarah’s instructions.””

Daniel looked up.

“What else?””

The lawyer opened the paper.

“Sarah requested that Lily’s trust be controlled by a third-party guardian.””

Daniel frowned.

“I’m her father.””

“Yes.””

Mr. Collins nodded.

“And Sarah knew that.””

Everyone waited.

“She specifically stated that Daniel Mercer was not to have access to Lily’s inheritance under any circumstances.””

Daniel exploded.

“Based on what?””

Mr. Collins calmly replied.

“Based on documented financial behavior.””

Daniel slammed his hand onto the table.

“This is my daughter.””

Lily flinched.

I immediately moved closer to her.

Daniel noticed.

His expression softened slightly.

“Lily, sweetheart, tell them.””

She looked at him.

“Tell them what?””

“That I’m your dad.””

Lily stared at him.

Then she quietly asked:

“Why did Mommy cry in her room after you came home?””

The question destroyed the room.

Daniel froze.

Because there was no answer.

Lily wiped her tears.

“She told me everything was okay.””

Her voice broke.

“But it wasn’t.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Mr. Collins’ phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened for several seconds.

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

“I’m sorry.””

Daniel stood.

“What happened?””

The lawyer slowly lowered the phone.

“Sarah left one more piece of evidence.””

May you like

A pause.

“And this one changes everything.””
