Chapter 3: The Letter Sarah Never Sent

The silence after Olivia’s confession felt heavier than the funeral itself.

Nobody looked at Daniel anymore.

Everyone looked at Olivia.

Because in one sentence, she had admitted something Daniel had spent years hiding.

Daniel stared at her.

“You need to leave.””

Olivia blinked.

“What?””

“You heard me.””

But Mr. Collins raised his hand.

“Actually, I would recommend everyone remain seated.””

Daniel looked furious.

“This is a private family matter.””

“No,” the lawyer replied.

“This became a legal matter when Sarah documented everything.””

My chest tightened.

Documented everything.

Sarah hadn’t just suspected.

She had prepared.

Mr. Collins removed another envelope from his briefcase.

“This was a personal letter written by Sarah.””

My fingers curled around the edge of my chair.

A letter.

For who?

The lawyer looked around the room.

“She requested that it be read after the evidence was presented.””

Daniel shook his head.

“She was emotional. Whatever she wrote—”

“Was written eleven days before her death,” Mr. Collins interrupted.

Daniel stopped talking.

Mr. Collins opened the letter.

I could almost hear Sarah’s voice.

The same voice that used to call me every Sunday morning.

“Dear Emily and Mom…”

My eyes filled immediately.

“She knew.””

My mother whispered.

The lawyer continued.

“I spent years believing love meant forgiveness. I believed if I stayed patient enough, if I became better enough, my marriage would heal.””

Nobody moved.

“But I learned something important. Forgiveness does not mean allowing someone to keep hurting you.””

Daniel looked away.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

Mr. Collins continued reading.

“I discovered Daniel’s relationship with Olivia after finding messages on our shared tablet.””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“She begged me to leave Daniel,” I whispered.

Because I remembered that conversation.

Sarah crying.

Sarah saying she felt trapped.

But she stayed.

For Lily.

The letter continued.

“I confronted Daniel. He apologized. He promised it was over.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“She believed me.””

Nobody answered.

The lawyer kept reading.

“But it was not over.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“She wrote everything down.””

Mr. Collins placed copies of messages on the table.

Dates.

Conversations.

Promises Daniel made.

Promises he broke.

My mother looked at him.

“How could you?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost laughed.

Mistakes.

Two years of betrayal.

Thousands of lies.

A broken woman hiding her pain.

“Mistakes are forgetting an appointment,” I said.

“Not destroying someone’s trust.””

Daniel looked at me with anger.

“You think you know everything?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“I know enough.””

Lily suddenly spoke.

“What did Mommy say about me?””

Everyone turned.

The room became quiet.

Mr. Collins softened.

“She said you were the reason she kept fighting.””

Lily began crying.

“She wasn’t supposed to leave.””

My mother pulled her close.

Daniel looked down.

For a moment, I almost saw regret.

Almost.

Then Olivia whispered.

“Daniel, we need to talk.””

He looked at her.

“Not now.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You promised me.””

That sentence changed everything.

Daniel looked nervous.

“What promise?””

Olivia stared at him.

“The one where you said after Sarah was gone, everything would be ours.””

Nobody breathed.

The lawyer slowly looked up.

I felt my heart stop.

Mr. Collins reached into the folder again.

“There is one final document.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“What document?””

The lawyer placed it on the table.

“Sarah’s evidence regarding the financial transfers made before her death.””

Daniel stared at the papers.

“I don’t understand.””

Mr. Collins looked directly at him.

“Sarah discovered money was missing from the accounts.””

Daniel froze.

“How much?””

The lawyer opened the document.

“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””

My mother gasped.

Olivia stepped backward.

“Daniel…”

But Daniel wasn’t looking at her.

He was looking at the papers.

Then Mr. Collins turned one page over.

“And Sarah left instructions explaining exactly where that money went.””

He paused.

“The name on the account receiving the funds was…”

May you like

The lawyer looked down.

And the entire room waited for the name Sarah had uncovered before she died.
