Chapter 11: The Secret My Mother Kept
Nobody spoke.
The name on the screen stayed there.
Mom.
I looked at my mother.
She looked like the air had been taken from her.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, that’s not possible.””
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, they looked equally afraid.
I felt sick.
“My mother?””
Mr. Collins immediately raised his hand.
“Emily, we need to watch the entire file before assuming anything.””
He was right.
Sarah had taught us that.
Evidence mattered.
Not guesses.
The video started.
Sarah appeared again.
Her eyes were red.
But her voice was steady.
“Emily, if this file opened, it means someone tried to make you believe the wrong person was responsible.””
I looked at Daniel.
He stared at the screen.
Sarah continued.
“My mother is involved.””
My heart stopped.
My mother covered her mouth.
“But not the way you think.””
Everyone looked confused.
Sarah took a breath.
“She helped Daniel without knowing the truth.””
The room changed.
My mother started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
Nobody answered.
The video continued.
“Mom thought she was protecting me.””
Sarah looked down.
“She believed Daniel was trying to save the family.””
My mother shook her head.
“I thought he was helping.””
The guilt in her voice was painful.
“What did he ask you to do?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“Sarah…”
“Mom.””
She closed her eyes.
“He asked me to keep some documents safe.””
My stomach tightened.
“What documents?””
“I never opened them.””
Daniel suddenly spoke.
“Because they were private.””
Everyone turned toward him.
My mother looked at him.
“You told me they were divorce papers.””
Silence.
Divorce papers.
Mr. Collins looked shocked.
“He gave them to you?””
My mother nodded.
“Two months ago.””
I stared at Daniel.
“You were preparing something.””
Daniel looked angry.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You keep saying that.””
My voice shook.
“But everyone understands now.””
Sarah’s video continued.
“If Mom is watching this, I want her to know something.””
My mother looked at the screen.
“I never blamed you.””
Those words destroyed her.
She began crying.
“I’m sorry.””
The video continued.
“But Daniel knew Mom trusted him.””
A pause.
“He used that trust.””
Daniel looked away.
Mr. Collins stopped the video.
“We need to examine those documents.””
My mother nodded.
“I still have them.””
Everyone turned.
“Where?””
She hesitated.
“At home.””
Daniel suddenly moved.
“I need to leave.””
I noticed.
Everyone noticed.
Mr. Collins stepped in front of the door.
“Why?””
Daniel glared.
“Because I have nothing to do with this.””
“Then why are you trying to leave before we see the documents?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence said enough.
My mother reached into her purse.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I brought them with me.””
My heart raced.
She had carried them all this time.
Inside were papers.
Legal documents.
But the first page wasn’t a divorce agreement.
It was a transfer form.
Mr. Collins read it carefully.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I asked.
He looked at Daniel.
“This document transfers ownership of Sarah’s house.””
My blood went cold.
“To who?””
He looked down.
Then answered:
“To Daniel Mercer.””
My mother gasped.
“But Sarah never signed that.””
Mr. Collins examined the signature.
Then slowly looked up.
“No.””
His voice became serious.
“This signature is forged.””
The room exploded.
Daniel immediately shouted:
“That’s impossible.””
Mr. Collins placed the paper down.
“There is more.””
He pointed to the bottom.
“The witness signature.””
My hands shook.
Because I recognized the name.
May you like
It belonged to someone I never expected.
Someone who had been helping Daniel from the beginning.
