Chapter 2: The Secret Sarah Left Behind
Nobody spoke after Mr. Collins opened the folder.
The only sound in the room was the ticking clock above Sarah’s fireplace.
Daniel sat forward.
Olivia crossed her legs.
My mother held Lily’s hand.
Sarah’s daughter looked confused.
She was only nine years old.
She didn’t understand why adults were whispering about her mother’s belongings like they were pieces of a puzzle.
Mr. Collins adjusted his glasses.
“Sarah’s first request was simple.””
He looked at Lily.
“She wanted her daughter to always be protected.””
Lily wiped her eyes.
“She always protected me.””
That sentence broke something inside me.
Because it was true.
Sarah was the person who remembered everyone’s birthdays.
The person who brought food to sick neighbors.
The person who apologized even when someone else hurt her.
Mr. Collins continued.
“Sarah left her jewelry collection to her mother.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“She didn’t have to…”
“She specifically wrote that those pieces represented memories from her childhood and she wanted them kept in the family.””
My mother cried silently.
“Her personal savings,” Mr. Collins continued, “will be placed into a trust for Lily’s education and future expenses.””
Daniel nodded.
“That makes sense.””
He sounded relaxed.
Too relaxed.
Like he already knew what was coming.
Then Mr. Collins reached the next page.
“The family home.””
Daniel immediately straightened.
“That’s mine.””
The room went still.
Mr. Collins looked up.
“No, Mr. Mercer.””
Daniel laughed once.
“I’m sorry?””
“The house was purchased entirely with funds Sarah inherited before your marriage.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“That’s not possible.””
“It is documented.””
Mr. Collins placed a copy of the paperwork on the table.
“The mortgage payments, renovation costs, and ownership records are all available.””
Olivia looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel ignored her.
“You’re saying Sarah left me with nothing?””
The lawyer stayed calm.
“I’m saying the house was Sarah’s property.””
Daniel stood up.
“This is ridiculous.””
I watched his anger grow.
Not grief.
Not sadness.
Anger.
He wasn’t mourning his wife.
He was mourning what he thought he was losing.
“Daniel,” my mother said quietly, “Sarah just died.””
He looked at her.
“And I’m supposed to stand here while people take everything away from me?””
I felt my hands shaking.
Everything away from him.
That was how he saw Sarah.
A collection of things.
A house.
Money.
Assets.
Not a person.
Mr. Collins opened another section of the folder.
“There is also a condition attached to Lily’s trust.””
Daniel stopped.
“What condition?””
The lawyer glanced down.
“Sarah wanted Lily’s inheritance protected from anyone who attempted to control, access, or misuse it.””
Olivia’s expression changed.
Daniel noticed.
“What are you implying?””
“I am not implying anything.””
Mr. Collins closed the folder halfway.
“I am reading Sarah’s instructions.””
The tension in the room became unbearable.
Then the lawyer reached inside his briefcase.
He removed another envelope.
It was marked:
CONFIDENTIAL.
Daniel stared at it.
“What is that?””
Mr. Collins placed it on the table.
“Evidence Sarah requested be reviewed after her death.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel’s voice became sharper.
“Evidence of what?””
Mr. Collins opened the envelope.
Inside were printed bank statements.
Hotel receipts.
Photographs.
My heart started pounding.
I recognized Daniel immediately in the first picture.
Standing outside a hotel.
With Olivia.
Olivia covered her mouth.
“Wait…”
Daniel looked at her.
“Don’t.””
Mr. Collins continued placing documents onto the table.
Dates.
Locations.
Payments.
Almost two years.
My mother looked at Daniel with disbelief.
“Sarah knew?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Daniel grabbed one of the papers.
“This proves nothing.””
I picked up a photograph.
It showed Daniel and Olivia together at a restaurant.
His hand was resting on hers.
The same hand he used to hold Sarah’s wedding ring.
“You lied to her,” I said.
Daniel looked at me.
“You don’t know what happened in my marriage.””
“No,” I answered.
“I know what happened to my sister.””
Olivia suddenly stood.
“Daniel, you said she didn’t know.””
The room froze.
Her voice was quiet.
But everyone heard it.
Daniel turned toward her slowly.
“What did you just say?””
Olivia’s face went pale.
May you like
She realized too late that she had revealed the one thing Daniel was trying to hide.
And Mr. Collins slowly reached for another document.
