Chapter 14: Sarah’s Final Truth
The police arrived twenty minutes later.
Not because anyone had called.
Because Mr. Collins had contacted them immediately after speaking with Noah.
For the first time, Daniel looked truly afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
The officers separated everyone.
Questions.
Documents.
Evidence.
The house that once held family memories now felt like a crime scene.
I sat beside my mother.
She looked broken.
“I should have listened to Sarah.””
I held her hand.
“Mom…”
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She tried to tell me.””
Her voice cracked.
“And I told her to be patient.””
I looked at Sarah’s photograph on the wall.
My sister had spent her whole life being patient.
Patient with Daniel.
Patient with family.
Patient with everyone except herself.
Mr. Collins received an update.
“Noah sent the files.””
My heart jumped.
“Already?””
He nodded.
A laptop was opened.
Three folders appeared.
The first:
PROPERTY.
The second:
FINANCIAL.
The third:
FINAL MESSAGE.
Nobody spoke.
Mr. Collins opened the first folder.
Inside were copies of documents.
Emails.
Bank records.
And a video.
The video showed Daniel meeting Richard.
My breath caught.
They were standing outside a parking garage.
Daniel was handing him an envelope.
Mr. Collins paused.
“Look at the date.””
Three months before Sarah died.
The same time Daniel claimed he was trying to save the marriage.
The video continued.
Richard opened the envelope.
Then Daniel said something.
The audio was unclear.
But one sentence was understandable.
“Sarah can’t find out.””
My hands became cold.
Mr. Collins opened the financial folder.
There were transfers.
Large amounts.
Payments to Richard.
Payments to Olivia.
Payments to an account under another name.
Daniel wasn’t just cheating.
He was building a plan.
Then we opened the final folder.
The file name was:
*If I Don’t Come Home.*
I couldn’t breathe.
Sarah appeared on screen.
This time she was crying.
But she looked determined.
“Emily.””
I broke down immediately.
“I’m sorry.””
Sarah continued.
“I wish I could tell you everything myself.””
She looked away.
“I found out Daniel wasn’t only trying to take my house.””
A pause.
“He was trying to remove me from my own life.””
Daniel, who was standing with an officer nearby, closed his eyes.
Sarah continued.
“He found someone willing to help him create documents.””
My heart raced.
“Someone who knew our family.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“And the worst part is…”
Her voice broke.
“I trusted that person.””
The video showed a picture.
A person appeared on screen.
Everyone gasped.
Because it wasn’t Richard.
It wasn’t Olivia.
It was someone none of us expected.
The person who had hugged me at the funeral.
The person who had cried beside Sarah’s casket.
The person who had pretended to be devastated.
My stomach dropped.
The video ended.
Mr. Collins looked at me.
“Emily…”
I already knew.
Because I remembered that person’s words.
I remembered the way they defended Daniel.
I remembered how quickly they tried to stop questions.
The police officer looked toward the person standing near the doorway.
“Please step away.””
The person froze.
Then slowly smiled.
Not sadly.
Not nervously.
Calmly.
And that was when I realized.
May you like
Sarah wasn’t just trying to expose Daniel.
She was trying to protect us from someone even more dangerous.
