Chapter 4: The Name on the Account
“The name on the account receiving the funds was Olivia Bennett.””
Nobody moved.
For several seconds, I wondered if I had heard him correctly.
Olivia.
The woman sitting in Sarah’s home.
The woman who had stood beside Daniel at my sister’s funeral.
The woman who had looked at Sarah’s family photos like she was already replacing her.
Olivia’s face drained of color.
“That’s impossible.””
Mr. Collins calmly placed the document on the table.
“The transfers began eighteen months ago. Multiple payments were made from a joint account connected to Daniel Mercer.””
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“You said you didn’t know anything about the money.””
Olivia’s eyes widened.
“Because I didn’t.””
Her voice cracked.
“You told me those payments were from your personal account.””
A bitter silence filled the room.
I looked at Daniel.
For the first time since the funeral began, he didn’t look confident.
He looked trapped.
My mother stood slowly.
“You stole from Sarah?””
Daniel shook his head.
“No. This is being misunderstood.””
I couldn’t believe he still said that.
“Misunderstood?””
I pointed at the papers.
“My sister died believing you loved her.””
Daniel looked away.
“Emily, you don’t understand marriage.””
“No,” I said.
“I understand betrayal.””
Mr. Collins continued.
“Sarah discovered the transfers while reviewing financial records after noticing unusual withdrawals.””
Lily sat beside my mother, holding onto her grandmother’s hand.
She didn’t understand every detail.
But she understood enough.
Her father had hurt her mother.
“She knew?”” I asked quietly.
The lawyer nodded.
“Sarah came to my office eleven days before her death.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?””
Mr. Collins looked down at the letter.
“She said, ‘I don’t want revenge. I just want Lily protected.’”
That sounded exactly like Sarah.
Even when someone broke her heart, she still thought about her daughter first.
Daniel suddenly pushed away from the table.
“This is ridiculous.””
Everyone looked at him.
“You’re all acting like I’m some criminal.””
Mr. Collins didn’t react.
“I have not accused you of anything. I am presenting Sarah’s documented concerns.””
Daniel laughed.
“Concerns?””
He looked around the room.
“My wife was sick. She was stressed. She was emotional.””
My hands tightened.
There it was.
The excuse.
The one people always used when they didn’t want to believe a woman.
Sarah was emotional.
Sarah was overreacting.
Sarah was imagining things.
But Sarah had been right.
Olivia stepped toward Daniel.
“You told me she knew about us.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What?””
“You said Sarah accepted it.””
The room froze.
My mother stared at Olivia.
“Accepted it?””
Olivia covered her mouth.
“I…”
She stopped.
But it was already too late.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Olivia, be quiet.””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You told me she didn’t care anymore. You told me the marriage was already over.””
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Not here.””
“Then where?””
Olivia’s voice rose.
“You brought me to her funeral, Daniel.””
Nobody spoke.
“You sat me next to her family.””
She looked around the room.
“You made me believe I wasn’t the other woman.””
The words hit harder than anything else.
Because Sarah had spent months knowing exactly what Olivia was.
And Olivia had spent months believing a different story.
Mr. Collins opened another folder.
“There is one more item Sarah requested I deliver.””
Daniel looked suspicious.
“What now?””
“A recording.””
My heart stopped.
“A recording?””
The lawyer nodded.
“Sarah left instructions that this should only be played after the financial evidence was reviewed.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Mr. Collins looked at him.
“No?””
“You can’t just play private conversations.””
“I can if Sarah authorized it in writing.””
The lawyer placed a small device on the table.
Everyone gathered closer.
Daniel looked suddenly afraid.
Not angry.
Afraid.
The recording started.
Static filled the room.
Then Sarah’s voice appeared.
Soft.
Tired.
But clear.
“If you are hearing this, it means I was right to prepare this.””
My eyes filled instantly.
I covered my mouth.
It was her.
My sister.
Alive in a room where she would never walk again.
Daniel stared at the device.
Sarah continued.
“Emily, Mom… I’m sorry you have to hear this after I’m gone.””
My mother began crying.
“I wanted to believe Daniel would change.””
A pause.
“But I also know my daughter deserves the truth.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
The recording continued.
“I found more than messages. I found plans.””
Everyone looked confused.
Plans?
Then Sarah said the words that made the entire room go silent.
“Daniel and Olivia were not just having an affair.””
She paused.
“They were planning something much bigger.””
May you like
The recording stopped.
And before anyone could react, Daniel reached toward the device.
