Chapter 9: The Son I Never Knew
I couldn't feel my hands.
The adoption document trembled between my fingers.
My signature was at the bottom.
My full name.
My executive identification number.
Even the small loop I always added beneath the final letter.
But I had never signed it.
"I didn't authorize this.""
Michael shrugged.
"That's what the document says.""
"Who prepared it?""
"Ask your lawyers.""
"Who witnessed it?""
He pointed toward the bottom of the page.
My mother.
Eleanor Bennett.
And Dr. Richard Hale.
I turned toward her.
"Mother?""
She began shaking her head.
"Daniel, I can explain.""
"Did you sign this?""
She looked at the floor.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
I felt something inside me break.
"You watched me bury my wife. You watched me raise Lily alone. And you knew I had another child?""
Eleanor started crying.
"I was trying to protect you.""
"From your own grandson?""
Michael stepped forward.
"Enough.""
I turned toward him.
"You had my son taken away.""
"He was placed with a good family.""
"Where?""
"I don't know.""
"You're lying.""
Michael adjusted his cuff.
"Believe whatever you want.""
I grabbed his jacket.
Marcus immediately stepped between us.
"Mr. Bennett!""
Michael didn't resist.
He simply looked into my eyes.
"You've always been emotional, Daniel. That's why Father gave me responsibility for the business.""
I released him.
"Don't bring Dad into this.""
"Why not? He understood what you never did. Running a company requires difficult decisions.""
"Stealing from children isn't a business decision.""
Michael's face darkened.
"You think you're some kind of hero because you inherited a hotel?""
I said nothing.
He continued.
"Father built this family. I kept it alive. You spent years playing the loving husband while I cleaned up the messes.""
I looked at the adoption record.
"Who adopted my son?""
Michael laughed.
"Does it matter? He's probably happier than he would have been with a father who couldn't even recognize what was happening in his own house.""
Marcus stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, I recommend that we escort him out.""
Michael raised his hand.
"Don't touch me.""
Then he looked at me.
"You have forty-eight hours to sign the revised shareholder agreement.""
I stared at him.
"Or what?""
He glanced toward the bedroom where Lily was sleeping.
"Or the people who know where your daughter goes to preschool may become interested in her routine.""
My blood turned cold.
Marcus moved immediately.
"That's a threat.""
Michael shrugged.
"Call it friendly advice.""
I looked at my brother.
For the first time in my life, I didn't see a family member.
I saw someone who had been planning our destruction for years.
"You're finished, Michael.""
He smiled.
"That's what you think.""
Then he walked toward the elevator.
Marcus signaled two officers to follow him.
But Michael suddenly stopped.
He turned around.
"Oh, Daniel. I almost forgot.""
He reached into his briefcase and removed a photograph.
He placed it on the table.
It showed a little boy standing outside a school.
Maybe five or six years old.
Dark hair.
Brown eyes.
A small birthmark near his left temple.
I stared at the photograph.
"Where did you get this?""
Michael smiled.
"Your son.""
My knees nearly gave way.
"Where is he?""
"Somewhere safe.""
"Tell me where!""
He stepped toward the elevator.
"Sign the agreement, and perhaps I'll tell you.""
The doors closed.
I turned toward Marcus.
"Get the police. Now.""
He nodded.
Then I looked at my mother.
"You're going to tell me everything.""
Eleanor sat down heavily.
"I know.""
"No more lies.""
She wiped her eyes.
"Clara discovered the financial fraud about six months before her supposed death. She found out Michael was using the hotel to transfer money through shell companies.""
"Why didn't she tell me?""
"She did.""
I frowned.
"What?""
"She showed you the documents.""
I shook my head.
"No, she didn't.""
Eleanor looked at me.
"Daniel, you were in the hospital with her. You were exhausted. You told her you couldn't handle another problem.""
I remembered that night.
Clara had been sitting beside the window.
She had asked me to look at some papers.
I had been on the phone with the bank.
I had told her we'd discuss it tomorrow.
Tomorrow never came.
I closed my eyes.
"Continue.""
"Michael discovered she had copies of the records. He arranged for Dr. Hale to move her out of the hospital. They planned to make her disappear until the investigation was over.""
"And the baby?""
Eleanor's voice broke.
"Clara gave birth to him before the transfer. Michael believed the child could become a legal obstacle to his control of the trust.""
"Why?""
"Because Clara changed her will. She made both children beneficiaries.""
I stared at her.
"Where did they take him?""
"I don't know the exact address. But I know the family name.""
I leaned forward.
"What name?""
Eleanor hesitated.
Then she whispered:
"The Whitmores.""
I recognized it.
The Whitmores were one of Charleston's wealthiest families.
They owned several businesses and had connections to the hospital.
"You're telling me my son was adopted by the Whitmores?""
She nodded.
"Michael arranged it through a private agency.""
My phone suddenly vibrated.
An unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Hello?""
A young boy's voice came through.
"Is this Daniel?""
I stopped breathing.
"Yes. Who is this?""
"My name is Noah.""
My fingers tightened around the phone.
"Hello, Noah.""
The boy hesitated.
"Mom says I'm not supposed to call strangers.""
I looked at the photograph on the table.
"Who is your mom?""
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
I closed my eyes.
"Where are you, buddy?""
"I'm in my room.""
A small pause.
Then he whispered:
"Are you really my daddy?""
I couldn't speak.
Tears ran down my face.
"Yes, son. I believe I am.""
He sniffled.
"Then why did you give me away?""
I looked at the adoption papers.
"I didn't, Noah. I promise you, I didn't.""
The boy was quiet.
Then he said something that made my heart stop.
"Mom says you're not allowed to come get me.""
I swallowed.
"Why?""
"Because Uncle Michael said you might hurt me.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She covered her mouth.
"Is Michael there with you?"" I asked.
"No.""
"Who is?""
"Mommy.""
I froze.
"What did you say?""
Noah whispered something.
"She's crying.""
"Who is crying, sweetheart?""
"My real mommy.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where is she?""
The boy took a shaky breath.
Then he said the words I'd spent two years praying to hear.
"She's here, Daddy.""
A pause.
"She says her name is Clara.""
I staggered backward.
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
"Can I talk to her?""
Noah whispered, "Wait.""
I heard footsteps.
Then a woman's voice.
A voice I knew better than my own.
"Daniel?""
My eyes filled instantly.
"Clara?""
She began sobbing.
"I'm sorry.""
I pressed the phone against my ear.
"Where have you been? Why didn't you come home? Why did you let me bury you?""
"I couldn't.""
"Why?""
Her voice trembled.
"Because Michael wasn't the only person who wanted me dead.""
I looked toward my mother.
Eleanor was standing completely still.
Then Clara whispered the final words.
"Daniel, the person who ordered the attack on me was someone you kissed goodbye every morning.""
I slowly turned toward Eleanor.
And my mother began backing toward the door.
"Daniel," Clara said urgently, "don't let her leave.""
But Eleanor had already reached the elevator.
And as the doors opened, she looked directly at me and said:
"Your wife is lying. Ask her what happened to your father.""
The elevator doors closed.
I stood frozen.
May you like
Because my father had supposedly died fifteen years earlier.
And suddenly, I wasn't sure I had ever known the truth about my family.
