Chapter 14: The Real Bennett Heir
For several seconds, I couldn't understand the words.
I looked at the birth certificate.
Then at the photograph.
Then at my mother.
"What are you saying?""
Eleanor placed the document on the altar.
"The hospital records were altered when you were born.""
I stared at her.
"That's impossible.""
"Your father knew.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Daniel, you were born at Charleston Memorial. Your biological parents were different people.""
My entire body went cold.
Michael started laughing.
"Now you understand why Mother never wanted you to look too closely at the family records.""
I turned toward him.
"Shut up.""
Eleanor continued.
"Your biological mother died during childbirth. Your biological father was listed as unknown.""
I stared at the photograph.
The baby had a tiny mark near his left temple.
The same birthmark I had seen in childhood pictures.
I touched my own temple.
"Who raised me?""
"Your father and I.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard wanted another child.""
I felt sick.
"Did he know I wasn't his?""
She nodded.
"He loved you as his own.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then something occurred to me.
"Why would you tell me this now?""
Eleanor glanced toward Michael.
"Because the truth has become more dangerous than the lie.""
Michael stepped forward.
"Mother, stop talking.""
She ignored him.
"The original Bennett inheritance was never supposed to pass through Richard. It belonged to a family trust established by your biological father.""
I looked at the document.
There was a name printed beneath the photograph.
*THOMAS WHITMORE.*
I froze.
"Whitmore?""
Eleanor nodded.
"The same family that adopted the boy.""
I looked toward Noah.
The little boy was staring at me.
Michael smiled.
"Your biological father was the man who owned the Whitmore shipping empire.""
I felt the room tilt.
The Whitmores hadn't adopted Noah because they wanted a child.
They had been searching for an heir.
And someone had used my identity to confuse the inheritance.
"Then why did they take Noah?""
Eleanor answered.
"Because they believed he was the Bennett heir.""
Clara finally spoke.
"They discovered the truth three months ago. They learned that the adoption records had been falsified. That's why they started protecting Noah.""
I looked at her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because I was trying to find proof before Michael could destroy it.""
I stared at the photograph of my newborn self.
"Who is my biological father?""
Eleanor's expression changed.
She looked toward the chapel doors.
A figure stood there.
An elderly man leaned against a walking stick.
His hair was white.
His face was thin.
But his eyes were unmistakable.
My father.
Richard Bennett.
He had escaped the hospital.
"Dad?""
He stepped forward slowly.
"Daniel, your mother is telling you only part of the truth.""
Eleanor turned sharply.
"Richard, you shouldn't be here.""
He looked at her.
"Neither should you.""
Michael raised his weapon.
"Everybody stop!""
Marcus's voice came from outside.
"Michael! Put the weapon down!""
Michael spun toward the entrance.
Two officers appeared.
He raised the gun.
Clara screamed.
Richard stepped between Michael and the children.
A shot rang out.
My father collapsed.
"DAD!""
I ran toward him.
Marcus tackled Michael before he could fire again.
The gun slid across the floor.
Officers rushed inside and restrained him.
I dropped beside my father.
Blood spread across his shirt.
"Stay with me!""
He gripped my hand.
"Daniel...""
"Don't talk.""
He shook his head.
"You deserve the truth.""
I pressed my hand against the wound.
"Not now.""
He looked toward Eleanor.
"She didn't tell you everything.""
Eleanor began crying.
Richard continued.
"Your biological father wasn't Thomas Whitmore.""
I froze.
"Then who?""
He looked directly at me.
"Your biological father was my younger brother, James.""
I stared at him.
"Uncle James?""
Richard nodded.
"He died before you were born. He left everything to his child.""
I looked at Eleanor.
She closed her eyes.
"Richard and I adopted you because we wanted you to have a family.""
My father squeezed my hand.
"But Michael discovered the inheritance years later. He believed he deserved it.""
I looked at Michael.
He was being handcuffed.
His face had gone white.
"So all of this was about money?""
Richard shook his head.
"Not just money. Control.""
He struggled to breathe.
"James left a sealed letter. It explains everything.""
"Where is it?""
Richard pointed toward the blue ledger Marcus had recovered.
"Inside the back cover.""
I opened it.
A hidden compartment revealed a folded envelope.
The handwriting on the front read:
For my son, Daniel. When he is old enough to understand.
My hands trembled.
I opened the letter.
Daniel, if you are reading this, I am no longer alive. I want you to know that I loved you before I ever held you. Your mother died bringing you into the world, and my brother Richard promised to raise you as his own.
I stopped.
The next paragraph changed everything.
I also left you a controlling interest in the Whitmore family trust. However, there is one condition. You must never allow Eleanor Bennett to control the estate.
I looked up.
Eleanor was crying.
I continued reading.
She was the person who tried to sell my company before I died. Richard protected you by giving you his name. I trusted him to keep you safe.
The final sentence was underlined.
And Daniel, if you ever meet a woman named Clara, protect her. She is the only person who will eventually uncover what Eleanor did.
I looked at my wife.
She was crying silently.
"James knew about you?""
She nodded.
"He knew my family. He asked me to watch over you if anything happened to him.""
I stared at her.
"Then why did you marry me without telling me?""
"Because I fell in love with you.""
She stepped closer.
"Not because of your inheritance. Not because of your hotel. I loved the man who held my hand when I was afraid.""
For the first time in two years, I wanted to hold her.
But before I could move, one of the officers approached.
"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""
I looked at him.
"What now?""
He showed me his phone.
The security team had recovered another recording from the chapel.
It showed Eleanor entering the building before Michael.
She had spoken to someone.
Someone standing outside the camera's view.
The officer played the audio.
Eleanor's voice was unmistakable.
"Once Daniel signs the documents, we can finish what we started fifteen years ago.""
A man's voice answered.
"He's not going to sign.""
Eleanor laughed.
"Then we'll use the girl.""
I looked at the screen.
The camera shifted.
And the person standing beside my mother became visible.
It was Thomas Thompson.
The old employee who had recognized me in the lobby.
The man who had protected my family for thirty-two years.
The man who had promised Clara he would keep her belongings safe.
I slowly turned toward the chapel entrance.
Thomas was standing there.
His eyes were filled with tears.
"Mr. Bennett," he whispered.
I couldn't move.
He lowered his head.
"I'm sorry.""
And then he said something that made me realize the final betrayal was still waiting.
"Your wife didn't ask me to protect the letters, sir.""
May you like
He looked at Clara.
"She asked me to protect you from what was written in them.""
