Chapter 6: The Money My Wife Left Behind
I read the transaction description until the words blurred.
Payment for silence.
Final installment.
My brother had transferred two and a half million dollars from an account belonging to my supposedly deceased wife.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
Lily was asleep again, her teddy bear tucked beneath her chin.
Thomas stood by the window.
Marcus was speaking quietly with the security team outside.
Nobody said anything.
Finally, I looked up.
"How much did you say the account contained?""
Thomas glanced at the screen.
"Eighteen point seven million.""
I nodded slowly.
"Clara never told me about this money.""
"Perhaps she had a separate investment account," Thomas suggested.
"Perhaps.""
But something didn't add up.
Clara and I had always shared our finances. Even when she wanted to surprise me, she never hid major financial decisions.
I opened the email again.
There was a second attachment.
A scanned document titled:
*BENNETT FAMILY TRUST — BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION.*
I clicked it.
The first page listed Clara Bennett as the original trustee.
The second named Lily Bennett as the sole beneficiary.
The third page contained a handwritten note.
If Daniel ever discovers this account, it means the protection I arranged has failed.
I stopped breathing.
There was more.
Michael must never gain control of these funds. He knows what happened at the hospital, and he knows why I disappeared.
I looked at Thomas.
"Did Clara ever mention a family trust?""
He shook his head.
"No, sir.""
"Did she ever say anything about Michael?""
Thomas hesitated.
"She once asked me whether your brother still had access to the executive floor.""
I stared at him.
"When?""
"About two weeks before she died.""
"Why?""
"She said she was worried about someone entering Suite 701 without permission.""
I stood.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Thomas lowered his eyes.
"I thought she was worried about the renovations. I didn't understand the significance.""
I walked toward the balcony.
Charleston's evening lights shimmered beyond the glass.
Two years ago, Clara and I had stood in this exact spot.
She had rested her head against my shoulder and told me she wanted Lily to grow up believing that love was something safe.
I remembered laughing.
I remembered promising her that I would never let anyone hurt our daughter.
And now I was beginning to understand that I might have failed both of them.
My phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
I answered.
"Daniel Bennett.""
A woman's voice whispered.
"Don't say my name.""
I froze.
"Who is this?""
"It's the woman you saw upstairs.""
I walked farther onto the balcony.
"Where are you?""
"Somewhere your brother can't find me.""
"Are you Clara's twin?""
A long silence followed.
Then she answered.
"Yes.""
I gripped the railing.
"What's your name?""
"Claire.""
"Where is my wife?""
Her breathing became uneven.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something. Clara didn't disappear because she wanted to abandon you.""
"Then why?""
"Because someone arranged for her to be declared dead.""
My throat tightened.
"Who?""
"Your brother.""
I closed my eyes.
"Why would Michael do that?""
"Because Clara discovered what he was doing with the hotel.""
I looked through the glass doors at the sleeping Lily.
"What was he doing?""
Claire lowered her voice.
"Money laundering. Fake vendors. Hidden accounts. He was using the hotel to move money through companies that didn't exist.""
I felt sick.
"And Clara found out?""
"She found the evidence in the seventh-floor storage room.""
I remembered the letters.
The jewelry.
The documents.
Everything Clara had hidden.
"Where is she now?""
Claire didn't answer.
"Claire?""
"She's alive, Daniel.""
I gripped the phone harder.
"Tell me where she is.""
"I can't.""
"She's my wife!""
"And she's my sister!""
Her voice broke.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then she continued.
"Clara wanted to come back. She wanted to see Lily. But she was afraid Michael would find her.""
I swallowed.
"Why didn't she contact me?""
"Because she believed you were involved.""
The words struck me like a physical blow.
"What?""
"She found documents carrying your signature. Documents authorizing the transfers. She thought you knew.""
"I never authorized anything.""
"I believe you.""
"Then tell her that.""
"I tried.""
"Try harder.""
Claire sighed.
"Daniel, there's something else. The money in that account isn't yours.""
"I know.""
"It's not Clara's either.""
I frowned.
"Then whose is it?""
"Lily's.""
I looked toward my daughter.
"What?""
"Clara transferred the money into a trust for Lily before she disappeared. Michael has been trying to gain control of it ever since.""
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
"Why would he need two and a half million dollars?""
"Because the final payment wasn't for silence.""
"What was it for?""
Claire whispered.
"To keep the doctor who signed Clara's death certificate from talking.""
I stared at the city.
"Dr. Richard Hale.""
"Yes.""
"Where is he?""
"At the hotel.""
I turned around.
"What?""
"He checked into Suite 701 this afternoon.""
My blood ran cold.
"That's impossible. The suite was supposed to be empty.""
"Michael arranged it.""
I looked toward the bedroom.
The storage-room door was still locked.
The letters were still missing.
And somewhere inside my own hotel, the doctor who had declared my wife dead was staying in the very room where she'd left her secrets.
"Claire, listen to me. I'm going to find him.""
"Daniel, wait.""
"What?""
"There's a reason Michael wants you to open that storage room.""
I looked at Thomas.
He was watching me carefully.
"What reason?""
Claire's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Because the evidence isn't just about the money.""
A pause.
"It's about what happened on the night Clara supposedly died.""
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Daniel, your wife wasn't the only person who was supposed to die that night.""
The call disconnected.
I stood motionless.
Then Marcus rushed into the suite.
"Mr. Bennett, we have a problem.""
"What now?""
He held up his tablet.
"We reviewed the seventh-floor security footage.""
"And?""
"Dr. Hale never checked into Suite 701.""
I stared at him.
"Then who did?""
Marcus turned the screen toward me.
The footage showed a man entering the suite at 3:12 p.m.
He wore a dark coat and carried a small black case.
The camera captured his face as he looked directly toward the lens.
I recognized him immediately.
It was Michael.
But the terrifying part wasn't that he'd entered my wife's room.
It was what he was carrying.
A framed photograph of Clara.
And behind the photograph was a small envelope.
Thomas stepped closer.
"Sir, look at the timestamp.""
I did.
The footage was from that afternoon.
Michael had entered Suite 701 less than an hour before I arrived.
Then Marcus enlarged the image.
The envelope had a handwritten message on it.
*FOR DANIEL — OPEN ONLY AFTER THE GIRL IS GONE.*
I felt my blood turn to ice.
Because the girl was Lily.
And suddenly, I understood that this wasn't just about stealing money or hiding a secret.
May you like
Someone had planned for my daughter to disappear.
And they had expected me to arrive at the hotel too late to stop it.
