Chapter 13: The Child Who Wasn't Mine
The gunshot echoed through the chapel.
"CLARA!""
I jumped out of the car before Marcus could stop me.
He grabbed my arm.
"Mr. Bennett, wait! We have officers approaching from the eastern entrance.""
I pulled free.
"My wife and son are inside!""
"That's exactly why you need to be careful.""
I looked through the open chapel doors.
Michael stood near the altar.
Clara was tied to a wooden chair.
And Noah was standing beside him, crying.
Michael held a gun in one hand and a folder in the other.
"Come in, Daniel!""
I stepped through the doorway.
"Let them go.""
Michael smiled.
"Always giving orders. You really haven't changed.""
I looked at Clara.
Her cheek was bruised, and her wrists were red from the restraints.
"Are you hurt?""
She shook her head.
"Daniel, don't give him anything.""
Michael pressed the gun against the back of Noah's shoulder.
"That's enough.""
I stopped.
"Don't touch my son.""
"Your son?""
Michael laughed.
"That's an interesting assumption.""
I looked at Noah.
He was trembling.
"Come here, buddy.""
Michael tightened his grip.
"Not so fast.""
He placed the folder on the altar.
"Open it.""
I glanced at Clara.
She shook her head again.
I approached the altar and opened the folder.
Inside were medical records, hospital transfer documents, and a DNA report.
The first page identified Noah as the biological child of Daniel Bennett and Clara Bennett.
But the second page contained another test.
A separate genetic comparison.
I read the names.
*Daniel Bennett — Alleged Father.*
*Noah Whitmore — Child.*
The result was clear.
*Probability of paternity: 0%.*
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Michael.
"What is this?""
He smiled.
"Exactly what it says.""
I turned toward Clara.
"Tell me this is fake.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Daniel...""
"Tell me!""
She looked down.
"I need to explain.""
Michael laughed.
"Go ahead, Clara. Tell him.""
I felt the room closing around me.
"Is Noah my son?""
Clara finally whispered.
"No.""
The word was barely audible.
I stepped backward.
For months, I had believed I had lost a son I never got to know.
I'd imagined his first day of school.
His birthday parties.
The way he might have looked at four years old.
And now I was being told that none of it was real.
Michael leaned against the altar.
"Your wife has been lying to you for years.""
I looked at him.
"Who is Noah's father?""
Michael's smile widened.
"That's the question, isn't it?""
Clara suddenly shouted.
"Daniel, don't listen to him!""
Michael raised the gun.
"Quiet!""
Noah began sobbing.
"Please don't hurt Mommy!""
I moved instinctively.
"Michael, look at me. Leave the boy out of this.""
Michael lowered the gun slightly.
"You're going to sign the transfer agreement. All your shares. All your voting rights. And the trust.""
I looked at the documents.
"Why?""
"Because the company belongs to me.""
"No. It belongs to the people who built it.""
Michael laughed.
"Father built it. Mother protected it. I saved it. You simply inherited it.""
"And stole from your niece.""
"Your niece?""
He shook his head.
"You're still not understanding.""
He pulled another document from the folder.
It was a medical record dated three days after Lily's birth.
The name of the attending physician was Dr. Richard Hale.
I read the final paragraph.
Then I looked up.
"What's this?""
Michael's voice became quieter.
"The truth about Lily.""
Clara began shaking her head.
"Please, Michael. Don't.""
He turned toward her.
"Why not? You've kept enough secrets.""
I examined the document.
It described a medical complication during delivery.
There were two newborns.
One had been transferred to intensive care.
The other had been discharged with the mother.
But something was wrong with the dates.
I read them again.
The hospital had recorded Lily's birth at 6:42 a.m.
The second child's birth was recorded at 6:49 a.m.
Yet the medical record showed that the second child had been born to a different mother.
I looked at Clara.
"What does this mean?""
She closed her eyes.
"Daniel, when Lily was born, there was another baby in the hospital room.""
"Another baby?""
"Yes.""
Michael smiled.
"Not your son. Not your daughter. Someone else's child.""
I stared at the records.
Then I noticed the final page.
It contained a handwritten note from Dr. Hale.
Infant substitution completed under authorization from Eleanor Bennett.
My heart stopped.
"Substitution?""
Clara began crying.
"Daniel, Lily was the baby I gave birth to.""
I stared at her.
"Of course she was.""
"But Michael and Eleanor believed the other baby was the Bennett heir.""
I looked at the document again.
Suddenly, everything became clear.
The second child had been placed in the Whitmore family.
The adoption papers.
The altered birth records.
The secret trust.
It had all been designed around a child who wasn't even related to us.
Michael stepped closer.
"Your mother wanted an heir she could control. The Whitmores wanted a child. Dr. Hale arranged the exchange.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"Because the real Bennett heir was never supposed to inherit anything.""
Clara looked directly at me.
"Daniel, the baby they gave to the Whitmores wasn't ours. But someone knew the truth.""
"Who?""
She swallowed.
"Your mother.""
Michael suddenly looked toward the chapel entrance.
A voice came from behind us.
"That's enough.""
Eleanor Bennett stepped inside.
Her face was pale.
In her hand was a second folder.
She looked at me.
"Daniel, put down the documents.""
I stared at her.
"Did you switch the babies?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she looked at Clara.
"You should have stayed dead.""
Clara closed her eyes.
Then Eleanor placed the folder on the altar.
"There's something else you need to know.""
She turned toward me.
"Your daughter Lily is not the only child I arranged to disappear.""
My blood ran cold.
Eleanor opened the folder.
Inside was a birth certificate.
A certificate bearing my name.
And beneath it was a hospital photograph of a newborn baby.

My mother whispered:
"Daniel, the child you believe is yours was never the child we brought home.""
