Chapter 7: The Envelope Behind the Photograph

"Nobody touches my daughter.""

My voice came out so quietly that Marcus initially didn't understand what I'd said.

Then he saw my face.

"Mr. Bennett, I've already doubled the security detail.""

"Double it again. Nobody enters this floor without my personal authorization. Nobody takes Lily anywhere. Not even someone wearing a hotel uniform.""

Marcus nodded.

"Understood.""

I turned toward Thomas.

"Can you stay with her?""

The old man's eyes softened.

"With my life, sir.""

Lily was sitting on the bed, coloring a picture of three people holding hands.

She had drawn herself in the middle.

A tall man stood on one side.

A woman with long dark hair stood on the other.

"Daddy," she said, holding up the paper.

"That's us.""

I forced a smile.

"It's beautiful, sweetheart.""

"Can we show Mommy when she comes back?""

I crouched beside her.

"Yes. I promise.""

I kissed her forehead, then handed Thomas the security emergency phone.

"Keep this with you.""

He nodded.

I followed Marcus into the corridor.

The elevator doors opened, revealing two security officers.

"Sir," one said, "the restricted storage room has been secured.""

"Good. Take me to Suite 701.""

We entered the presidential suite through the adjoining service entrance.

Michael's photograph was still on the table.

I picked it up.

Clara was smiling at the camera, wearing the pearl earrings I'd given her on our fifth anniversary.

The envelope was taped behind the frame.

I carefully removed it.

My name was written across the front in Clara's handwriting.

Not a forgery.

Not an imitation.

The real thing.

I opened it.

Inside was a small USB drive and a handwritten note.

Daniel, if you are reading this, Michael has already begun moving against Lily. Do not confront him until you understand what he has done.

My hands began shaking.

There was another sentence.

The person who helped him was someone we both trusted.

I looked at Marcus.

"Find a secure computer.""

He brought a laptop from the security office.

I inserted the drive.

A single video file appeared.

November 14.

The date Clara had supposedly died.

I clicked play.

The screen showed a hospital room.

The lighting was dim.

A woman lay in bed with an oxygen tube beneath her nose.

Her face was partially hidden.

Then the camera moved.

A man appeared beside the bed.

Dr. Richard Hale.

He looked directly at the camera.

"If anyone ever sees this recording," he said, "the official account of Clara Bennett's death is false.""

I leaned closer.

The doctor continued.

"Mrs. Bennett was alive when she was removed from Charleston Memorial Hospital. The death certificate was issued under instructions from Michael Bennett.""

I felt the room spinning.

The recording continued.

"However, Michael wasn't acting alone.""

The doctor turned toward someone standing outside the camera's view.

"Tell them.""

A second voice answered.

"I arranged the transfer.""

My heart stopped.

I recognized that voice.

I had heard it thousands of times.

At family dinners.

At business meetings.

At Clara's funeral.

It belonged to my mother.

Eleanor Bennett.

I gripped the edge of the desk.

"No.""

Marcus looked at me.

"Sir?""

I couldn't take my eyes off the screen.

My mother had stood beside me at the cemetery.

She had held Lily while I placed flowers on Clara's grave.

She had cried harder than anyone.

And now I was listening to her admit that she had arranged the disappearance of my wife.

The video continued.

Eleanor stepped into view.

"Michael, make sure the girl never gets access to the trust.""

Dr. Hale nodded.

"And Daniel?""

My mother looked directly at the camera.

"Daniel will believe whatever we tell him. He always has.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

Marcus slowly closed the laptop.

"Sir, should I contact the police?""

I stared at him.

"Not yet.""

"Why?""

"Because my mother knows things we don't. And if we move too quickly, Michael may destroy whatever evidence is left.""

My phone rang.

MOTHER appeared on the screen.

For a moment, I couldn't answer.

Then I pressed the green button.

"Hello, Mother.""

Her voice sounded warm.

"Daniel, darling. I heard you've returned to the hotel.""

I looked at the USB drive.

"Yes.""

"Michael tells me you've been asking strange questions.""

"Does he?""

"You're upsetting people. You need to stop this investigation before it damages the family.""

I closed my eyes.

"Mother, where were you on November 14, two years ago?""

Silence.

Then a soft sigh.

"Why are you asking me that?""

"Because I watched a video.""

Another silence.

This time, longer.

"What video?""

"The one showing you arranging Clara's transfer.""

Her breathing changed.

When she finally spoke, the warmth was gone.

"Daniel, listen very carefully.""

I waited.

"Whatever you think you saw, you didn't understand it.""

"Then explain it.""

"I was protecting this family.""

"From my wife?""

"From what your wife had discovered.""

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"What had she discovered?""

My mother lowered her voice.

"Ask yourself why Clara wanted to take Lily away from you.""

Then she hung up.

I stood there for several seconds.

Suddenly, Marcus's radio crackled.

"Security control to Mr. Bennett.""

I grabbed it.

"Go ahead.""

"Sir, we have an emergency.""

"What happened?""

"Someone has entered the presidential floor.""

"Who?""

A brief pause.

Then the officer answered.

"Your mother, sir.""

I looked at the elevator.

The doors were already opening.

May you like

And Eleanor Bennett stepped out carrying a little pink suitcase.

The same suitcase Lily had used on her last vacation with Clara.
