Chapter 5: The Document That Could Destroy Me

Dr. Harrison was waiting inside a private conference room when I arrived.

The university's legal counsel, two board members, and Rebecca Mills were gathered around a long wooden table.

A laptop displayed the fraudulent ownership agreement.

I placed my phone on the table.

"Tell me exactly what happened.""

Rebecca stood.

"At 11:42 a.m., someone accessed the university's project portal using Daniel Reed's credentials.""

"Where was the login coming from?""

"Our technology department traced it to an external network.""

"Can they identify the location?""

"Not yet.""

I leaned over the laptop.

The document was dated three days earlier.

According to its contents, I had transferred forty percent of my ownership in Reed Meridian Development to a newly formed company called Meridian Strategic Holdings.

The remaining sixty percent would supposedly be transferred after the university approved the $85 million development agreement.

I read the page twice.

"This is fabricated.""

Dr. Harrison nodded.

"We suspected as much.""

One of the board members, Mr. Collins, adjusted his glasses.

"Unfortunately, if this document is submitted to the wrong financial institution, it could create serious complications.""

"Especially if someone uses it to request loans," I replied.

Rebecca opened another file.

"That's exactly what we're concerned about.""

She displayed a list of recent inquiries.

Three financial institutions had received preliminary applications using the alleged ownership agreement.

One application requested a $12 million credit facility.

Another requested $8 million.

The third had been submitted to a private investment group.

All three listed Reed Meridian as collateral.

I straightened.

"Has anyone approved these applications?""

"Not that we can confirm.""

"Then we stop them before anyone does.""

Dr. Harrison nodded.

"Our legal department will cooperate fully.""

I thanked him and called Michael.

He answered on the first ring.

"Marcus, I've got the preliminary audit.""

"Tell me.""

"Daniel created a shell company four months ago. Meridian Strategic Holdings.""

I looked at the laptop.

"Who owns it?""

"According to the registration, a woman named Olivia Grant.""

"Daniel's assistant.""

"Correct.""

"Who funded it?""

Michael paused.

"That's where things get complicated.""

"Go on.""

"Initial capital came from a company registered in Delaware. The company is controlled by an investment group called Whitmore Capital Partners.""

I looked at Ethan, who was sitting across the room under the supervision of campus security.

"Richard Whitmore.""

"That's what it looks like.""

"How much money has moved through the shell company?""

"Approximately $3.7 million.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Where did it come from?""

"Multiple accounts. Some are connected to development deposits. Others appear to be vendor payments.""

"You're telling me my own company has been financing this?""

"I'm afraid so.""

I stared at the fraudulent ownership agreement.

For years, I'd trusted Daniel with the details of our operations.

He knew which accounts held acquisition funds.

He knew which contractors received advance payments.

He knew every weakness in our financial structure.

And he'd apparently spent months building a way to steal from us.

"Michael, freeze every questionable transaction. Preserve every record. And get our external auditors involved.""

"Already underway.""

"One more thing. Find out where Daniel is.""

"I have a possible lead.""

"What?""

"His company access card was used at our downtown storage facility last night.""

I stood.

"What's stored there?""

"Old contracts. Original property deeds. Backup servers.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did anyone check the facility?""

"Security is on the way.""

I ended the call.

Dr. Harrison looked at me.

"Marcus, are you all right?""

I nodded, although my hands were shaking.

"Someone needs to explain why my brother wants those records.""

Rebecca closed the laptop.

"Mr. Reed, there's something else you should see.""

She opened an email attachment recovered from the university's portal.

It was a message between Daniel and Richard Whitmore.

*Richard: Once the university approves the agreement, Marcus will have no authority to challenge the transfer.*

*Daniel: He won't even know what happened until the lenders come after him.*

*Richard: And Vanessa?*

*Daniel: She's useful. Keep her close until the final payment clears.*

I read the exchange again.

Vanessa wasn't simply someone who had accepted money.

She had been part of a plan that treated my relationship as a tool.

I turned toward the door.

"Where is she?""

Rebecca looked confused.

"Ms. Collins?""

"Yes.""

"She was taken to the administrative office for questioning.""

I walked down the hallway.

Vanessa was sitting alone in a small room.

Her graduation gown was folded across her lap.

Her makeup had run, and her diamond bracelet rested on the table.

When she saw me, she stood immediately.

"Marcus.""

I remained near the doorway.

"How much did Daniel tell you about the ownership agreement?""

She shook her head.

"Nothing.""

"Did you know he was trying to transfer control of my company?""

"No.""

"Did he ask you to sign anything?""

Her silence made me suspicious.

"Vanessa, answer me.""

She opened her handbag and removed a folded document.

"I didn't know what it was.""

I took it.

It was a power of attorney.

The document supposedly authorized Vanessa to act as my representative in certain financial matters.

My name appeared at the bottom.

So did a signature.

Another forgery.

"Where did you get this?""

"Daniel gave it to me two weeks ago.""

"And you signed it?""

"He said it was just a supporting document for the university project.""

I stared at her.

"You signed something giving you authority to act on my behalf without asking me?""

She began crying.

"I thought it was harmless.""

"How could it possibly be harmless?""

"He said you knew about it.""

I placed the document on the table.

"Did you ever meet Daniel without Ethan?""

She hesitated.

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Last Friday.""

"Where?""

"His office.""

"What did he tell you?""

Vanessa looked toward the closed door.

Then she whispered:

"He said if the plan worked, he would give me five million dollars.""

I stared at her.

"Five million?""

"He said it was my share for helping him.""

"Helping him do what?""

Her eyes filled.

"He wanted me to marry you.""

I couldn't move.

She continued, speaking through tears.

"He said that if we got engaged, I could persuade you to sign the ownership agreement voluntarily. Then he would transfer the company shares before you realized what was happening.""

The room felt suddenly smaller.

"Did he know I was planning to propose today?""

Vanessa nodded.

"He knew.""

"How?""

"He said he had seen the ring receipt in your office.""

I stared at her.

My brother had known about the proposal.

He'd known I intended to marry her.

And he had apparently used that knowledge to build a trap around my company.

Vanessa reached for my hand.

"Marcus, I swear I didn't understand how far he was going.""

I pulled away.

"Did you ever love me?""

She began sobbing.

"Yes.""

"Then why did you agree to marry me for five million dollars?""

She couldn't answer.

My phone rang.

It was Michael again.

I answered.

"What's happening?""

His voice was urgent.

"Marcus, we found Daniel's car at the storage facility.""

"Where is he?""

"He's gone.""

"Did he take the records?""

"Some of them.""

"Which ones?""

Michael took a breath.

"The original shareholder agreement. The company formation documents. And the original deed to our first major property.""

I closed my eyes.

Then Michael added something that made me forget about Vanessa completely.

"Marcus, there's a handwritten note inside the empty safe.""

"What does it say?""

He read it aloud.

"If Marcus wants to know who really owns Reed Meridian, tell him to check the original agreement signed by our father.""

I went completely still.

May you like

Our father had died seven years earlier.

And according to everything I knew, he had never owned a single share in our company.
