Chapter 10: The Warehouse at Midnight

"Marcus, don't come here!""

Vanessa's scream was the last thing I heard before the call disconnected.

I stood inside the elevator, staring at my phone.

Michael pressed the emergency floor button.

"Marcus, we need to think carefully.""

"She's with my brother and Richard Whitmore. What exactly is there to think about?""

"We don't know what's happening inside that warehouse.""

"Then we'll find out.""

Eleanor stepped into the elevator just before the doors closed.

"You're not going without protection.""

She handed Michael a business card.

"Call Detective James Carter. He has handled several corporate fraud investigations for our legal department. Tell him we have evidence of financial crimes and a possible hostage situation.""

Michael immediately dialed the number.

I called Vanessa again.

This time, she answered.

Her voice was barely audible.

"Marcus?""

"Where are you?""

"Inside the warehouse. Near the loading area.""

"Are you hurt?""

"No. But please listen. Daniel has the original trust documents.""

"Why?""

"He says he wants you to sign something.""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"What?""

"A statement transferring your remaining company rights to him.""

I almost laughed.

"He's lost his mind.""

Vanessa whispered something.

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

"Richard has a gun.""

The call ended again.

Michael looked at me.

"Police are on their way.""

"How far?""

"About twelve minutes.""

Twelve minutes felt like an eternity.

The warehouse was located in an industrial district near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

When we arrived, the building looked abandoned.

A single security light illuminated the loading entrance.

Two black SUVs were parked outside.

Michael pointed toward the nearest vehicle.

"That's Daniel's.""

I recognized the license plate.

We moved toward the side entrance.

Before I could touch the handle, a voice came from inside.

"Marcus!""

Daniel.

I stopped.

"Let Vanessa go.""

A moment later, the metal door opened.

My brother stood in the doorway.

He looked exhausted.

His beard had grown unevenly, and his expensive shirt was wrinkled.

But his eyes were still the same.

The eyes of the boy who used to race me down our father's driveway.

"Hello, brother.""

I stared at him.

"Where is Vanessa?""

"Inside.""

"Is she hurt?""

"She's fine.""

"Then let her leave.""

Daniel smiled bitterly.

"You always were impatient.""

I stepped inside.

The warehouse smelled of oil and damp concrete.

Vanessa was sitting on a wooden chair near a workbench.

Her hands were tied.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"Marcus!""

I moved toward her.

Richard Whitmore stepped out from behind a stack of shipping crates.

He was holding a handgun.

"That's far enough.""

I stopped.

Michael moved beside me.

Richard smiled.

"Well, well. The famous Marcus Reed.""

"Put the gun down, Richard.""

"You're in no position to give orders.""

Daniel placed a folder on the workbench.

"Let's finish this.""

I looked at him.

"What do you want?""

"Your signature.""

"On what?""

"The ownership transfer.""

I shook my head.

"You already know the family trust prevents that.""

Daniel's expression changed.

"So you found Eleanor.""

"Yes.""

"She should have stayed out of our family business.""

"She was protecting what Dad built.""

Daniel laughed.

"Everything Dad built was supposed to be mine.""

I stared at him.

"You owned forty percent. You had a future. You had a place in the company.""

"A place beneath you!""

His voice echoed through the warehouse.

"Every meeting, every contract, every award. Dad always introduced you first. Marcus this.

Marcus that. The brilliant older brother.""

I swallowed.

"That was never my decision.""

"You think that matters?""

Daniel slammed his hand against the workbench.

"I spent my entire life watching people admire you while I did the work nobody noticed.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

He laughed.

"Because you would have offered me another title and another meaningless speech.""

Richard interrupted.

"Enough family therapy. We have business to finish.""

He placed a document in front of me.

"Sign the transfer.""

I looked at it.

It was a declaration stating that I had voluntarily surrendered my voting rights and transferred all remaining interests to Meridian Strategic Holdings.

At the bottom was a space for my signature.

"Where's the original trust agreement?""

Daniel pointed toward a metal case.

"Right there.""

I looked at the case.

"Open it.""

"Sign first.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Why is she tied up?""

Daniel shrugged.

"She became inconvenient.""

Vanessa began crying.

"Marcus, I'm sorry. I never wanted this.""

Richard raised the gun slightly.

"Stop talking.""

I looked directly at him.

"You're going to prison for this.""

He smiled.

"Only if you can prove anything.""

Then Daniel opened the metal case.

Inside were original corporate documents, bank records, and a small digital recorder.

He removed the recorder.

"Your father left us a little surprise.""

My heart tightened.

"What is that?""

"A recording.""

He pressed a button.

My father's voice filled the warehouse.

"If you're hearing this, Daniel, then you've ignored every warning I've given you.""

Daniel's expression changed.

The recording continued.

"I know about the transfers. I know about Richard Whitmore. And I know you weren't working alone.""

I stared at my brother.

My father's voice became quieter.

"But there's one person you haven't considered.""

The recording stopped.

Daniel looked toward Richard.

Richard's face had gone pale.

"Turn that thing off.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Why?""

Richard stepped forward.

"Because I said so.""

For the first time, my brother looked genuinely confused.

I watched Richard carefully.

He wasn't frightened of the police.

He wasn't frightened of losing the money.

He was frightened of what my father had recorded.

And before anyone could move, the warehouse lights suddenly went out.

A loud crash echoed from the loading entrance.

Then a woman's voice shouted:

"ATLANTA POLICE! EVERYONE DROP YOUR WEAPONS!""

A gunshot exploded through the darkness.

Vanessa screamed.

May you like

And when the emergency lights came on, Richard Whitmore was no longer standing beside Daniel.

He was running toward the back exit.
