Chapter 13: The Accountant Who Knew My Mother's Secret

"Mr. Bennett, my name is Marcus Reed. I believe you knew my mother.""

The old man on the other end of the telephone didn't answer immediately.

I could hear television noise in the background, followed by the faint sound of someone moving a chair.

Then he spoke.

"Patricia's son?""

"Yes.""

A long silence followed.

"I wondered when someone would finally come looking for you.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She motioned for me to continue.

"I need to know what happened to my mother. And I need to understand why my uncle has spent years trying to destroy my family.""

Thomas Bennett sighed.

"Then you need to come to Savannah. There are things I cannot explain over the telephone.""

We left Atlanta before sunrise.

Michael stayed behind to coordinate with the investigators and secure Reed Meridian's financial records. Eleanor accompanied me.

By noon, we arrived at a quiet retirement community surrounded by tall oak trees.

Thomas was waiting on a wooden bench outside his apartment.

He was eighty-one, thin, and used a walking cane.

But his eyes were sharp.

When he saw me, he stood slowly.

"Marcus.""

I extended my hand.

He ignored it and pulled me into an embrace.

"I'm sorry, son.""

Those three words made my throat tighten.

We sat inside his apartment.

Thomas placed three thick folders on the coffee table.

"Your mother trusted me with these documents shortly before she died.""

"Why didn't you contact me?""

"I tried.""

He opened the first folder.

"Your uncle intercepted every attempt. He had people watching the company, the estate, and even your father's personal accounts.""

Eleanor frowned.

"Why didn't you report this to the authorities?""

Thomas looked at her.

"Because I had evidence, but I didn't have enough proof to survive what Richard could do to me. He controlled several financial institutions and had friends in powerful places.""

I opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, company registrations, and an original inheritance document.

The document listed Patricia Whitmore as the rightful beneficiary of a substantial family estate.

I looked up.

"What is this?""

Thomas leaned forward.

"Your maternal grandfather owned a group of commercial properties and investment holdings. When he died, he left the majority of his estate to your mother.""

"Then why did Richard control it?""

"Because he was the executor. He convinced Patricia to let him manage the assets temporarily.""

Thomas opened another folder.

"Your mother discovered that he had been selling properties without her consent.""

I examined the records.

Several properties had been transferred into companies controlled by Richard.

The total value was staggering.

"How much did he steal?""

"At the time, approximately eleven million dollars. The value would be significantly higher today.""

I shook my head.

"Why did she never sue him?""

"She intended to. But Richard threatened to expose her first marriage and use it to create a scandal around your father's company.""

I frowned.

"What did my first father have to do with this?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"James Carter was a financial investigator. He was hired by your grandfather to examine irregularities in the Whitmore estate.""

I leaned forward.

"Was he my biological father?""

Thomas nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked down.

My father, Robert Reed, had known.

He had known I might not be his biological son.

And he had loved me anyway.

Thomas continued.

"James discovered that Richard had been using fraudulent signatures to transfer family assets. Before he could finish the investigation, he died in a car accident.""

I stared at him.

"Was it really an accident?""

Thomas hesitated.

"I cannot prove otherwise. But James had told me that someone had been following him.""

Eleanor opened the second folder.

"What happened after his death?""

"Patricia married Robert. They wanted to build a peaceful life. Robert knew about James and accepted Marcus as his own son.""

I swallowed.

"Then Richard left them alone?""

Thomas shook his head.

"No. He discovered that Patricia had preserved the original inheritance documents. He needed them destroyed.""

He handed me another envelope.

"This is what your mother gave me.""

Inside was a handwritten statement.

It described how Patricia had transferred part of her inheritance into the Patricia Reed Family Foundation.

The money was intended to support scholarships, affordable housing, and educational programs.

But Richard had continued pursuing it.

Thomas pointed to the last page.

"Your mother also discovered that Daniel was being recruited.""

My stomach tightened.

"By Richard?""

"Yes. Richard told Daniel that Robert had stolen his rightful inheritance by giving you control of Reed Meridian.""

I shook my head.

"Daniel already owned forty percent.""

"Richard convinced him that your father had secretly promised him the entire company.""

Eleanor looked at Thomas.

"Was that promise ever made?""

"No.""

Thomas removed a final document.

It was a letter from my father to Daniel.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

Daniel, I love you equally. Your brother has never been your enemy. Stop listening to Richard Whitmore. He is using your resentment to steal what belongs to both of you.

I closed my eyes.

My father had tried to save Daniel.

But Daniel had chosen to believe the person who wanted to destroy us.

Thomas leaned closer.

"There's something else.""

He opened a small metal box.

Inside was a flash drive and a photograph of Richard standing with a young Daniel.

"Your mother made a recording shortly before her death. She wanted to explain why she transferred the inheritance money into the foundation.""

"Can I hear it?""

Thomas nodded.

He connected the drive to his laptop.

My mother's voice filled the apartment.

"Marcus, my beautiful boy. If you're hearing this, then someone finally found the truth.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"I want you to know that your uncle Richard never forgave me for inheriting what he believed belonged to him.""

Her voice trembled.

"He told me that if I gave him control of the estate, he would leave our family alone. I refused.""

A pause.

"Robert knows everything. He agreed to protect you, even when it meant standing against his own family.""

Then my mother said something unexpected.

"There's another reason I created the foundation.""

I leaned closer.

"James wanted children from struggling families to have the opportunities he never had. He left a portion of his personal inheritance to you, Marcus. Robert added to it. Together, we created something that Richard could never legally claim.""

The recording continued.

"Please don't let him destroy it.""

Then came the final sentence.

"Your real inheritance was never the money. It was the choice to become a better man than the people who hurt us.""

The recording ended.

I sat quietly.

For the first time in years, I felt I understood my mother.

I understood why my father had protected me.

And I understood why Richard had spent so much time trying to control the family assets.

But there was one final question.

"Thomas, do you have proof that Richard ordered the fraudulent transfers?""

The old man nodded.

He opened the metal box again.

"Your mother anticipated that someone would eventually need to prove it.""

He removed a second flash drive.

"This contains the original banking authorization, the communications with Richard's financial office, and a recorded conversation between Richard and Daniel.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Is this enough?""

She examined the files.

"With proper authentication, it could be.""

My phone rang.

Michael.

I answered immediately.

"What's happening?""

"Marcus, the investigators have made a discovery.""

"What?""

"Richard Whitmore's attorneys have submitted an emergency request to release him from custody.""

"On what grounds?""

"Apparently, someone has provided evidence that the warehouse incident was staged.""

I frowned.

"Who?""

Michael lowered his voice.

"Daniel.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where is Daniel?""

"He's agreed to cooperate with the prosecution.""

I stared at Thomas.

Then Michael continued.

"Marcus, there's something else. Daniel claims he has evidence proving Richard wasn't the only person involved.""

I closed my eyes.

"Who else?""

Michael took a breath.

"He's accusing someone from your father's original legal team.""

I looked at Eleanor.

Her face had suddenly gone pale.

May you like

Because Daniel had named the person who had helped draft our father's original family trust.

Eleanor Brooks.
