Chapter 14: The Last Person My Father Trusted

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Eleanor sat opposite me, staring at the table.

Thomas Bennett slowly closed the metal box.

Michael's voice continued through the phone.

"Marcus, did you hear me?""

"Yes.""

"Daniel says Eleanor altered the original trust agreement seven years ago.""

I looked at her.

"Is that true?""

She shook her head immediately.

"Absolutely not.""

Michael continued.

"He claims she helped Richard conceal the original inheritance documents.""

I took a breath.

"Don't release anything publicly. Preserve every record. I'll be back in Atlanta tonight.""

I ended the call.

Eleanor stood.

"Marcus, I can explain.""

"Then explain.""

She looked toward Thomas.

"I need to speak with you privately.""

"No.""

"Please.""

I leaned forward.

"You've been part of this family story from the beginning. You've told me what my father wanted, what my mother feared, and what Daniel supposedly did. If there's something you've been hiding, now is the time.""

Her eyes filled.

"I never betrayed your father.""

"Then why is Daniel accusing you?""

"Because I have something he desperately wants.""

She opened her briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

"This is the original trust amendment.""

I stared at it.

"Why didn't you show me earlier?""

"Because your father instructed me to release it only when the family inheritance had been fully identified.""

Thomas nodded slowly.

"I remember this document.""

Eleanor opened it.

The amendment contained a clause establishing that Patricia's inheritance would be transferred into a protected family foundation.

But the final page contained an additional provision.

If Richard Whitmore attempted to seize the assets, the trustee could transfer the entire foundation into an independent charitable trust.

I read the clause twice.

"Who was appointed as trustee?""

Eleanor pointed to the signature.

Her own name.

"Your father appointed me because he believed I was the only person who would refuse Richard's money.""

"Did Richard ever approach you?""

"Several times.""

"What did he offer?""

"Three million dollars.""

I stared at her.

"And you refused?""

"Yes.""

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because your father saved my career when I was a young attorney. He defended me when a powerful client tried to destroy my reputation. I owed him the truth.""

Thomas nodded.

"She was the one who helped your mother recover the original inheritance records.""

I looked at Eleanor.

"Then why did you keep everything secret?""

"Because Richard threatened to destroy the foundation if I exposed him before the evidence was secure.""

I sat back.

It was becoming clear that nearly everyone had been living under some form of threat.

But Daniel's accusation still needed to be investigated.

I called Detective Carter.

He agreed to arrange a formal meeting with Daniel and the prosecution team.

Three hours later, we were back in Atlanta.

Daniel was waiting inside an interview room.

He wore a gray detention uniform.

His face looked older.

When he saw me, he gave a small smile.

"Hello, Marcus.""

I sat opposite him.

"Why did you accuse Eleanor?""

He shrugged.

"Because she lied to you.""

"About what?""

"About the trust.""

I placed the original amendment on the table.

"Is this what you're talking about?""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Where did you get that?""

"Thomas Bennett.""

He looked away.

"Of course.""

"Daniel, tell me the truth.""

He leaned forward.

"Richard showed me a different version of that document.""

"Why?""

"Because he said Eleanor had changed the terms after Dad died.""

"Did you verify it?""

"No.""

"Then you helped him forge an ownership agreement based on a document you never verified?""

Daniel looked down.

I waited.

Finally, he spoke.

"I thought Dad had given me everything.""

"Why?""

"Because Richard told me Dad promised him the company.""

"That's not what the documents say.""

"I know that now.""

I looked at him.

"Why did you steal from us?""

His eyes became wet.

"Because I was tired of being second.""

I shook my head.

"You were my brother. You could have asked for anything.""

"That's easy for you to say.""

"No, Daniel. It's easy for me to say because I spent my life believing we were building something together.""

He looked away.

Then he reached into a folder and removed a handwritten letter.

"I found this in Richard's safe.""

I opened it.

It was dated two days before our father's death.

The letter was addressed to Richard Whitmore.

Richard,

I know you have been encouraging Daniel to believe that Marcus is not entitled to the Reed family trust.

You are using his resentment against him.

I will not allow you to turn my sons against each other.

If anything happens to me, Eleanor has instructions to release the original records.

You should understand one thing: Patricia's inheritance belongs to her family. Not yours.

The letter ended with a sentence that made Daniel lower his head.

And Daniel, if you're reading this, remember that your brother is the only person who will still stand beside you when everyone else walks away.

I placed the letter on the table.

"Why did you keep this?""

"Because I wanted to know whether Dad really believed in me.""

I stared at him.

"He did.""

Daniel wiped his face.

"I know.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.

"Did you know Richard was planning to use the warehouse to force me to sign?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you know he had a gun?""

"I didn't know he would bring it.""

"Did you know Vanessa would be tied up?""

He looked down.

"Yes.""

I stood.

"Then don't ask me to forgive you.""

Daniel began crying.

"I know.""

I turned toward the door.

"One more thing. Did you know who ordered the original transfers from the foundation?""

He hesitated.

"Richard.""

"Only Richard?""

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"No.""

I stopped.

"Who else?""

He looked at me.

"Someone who worked with Grandmother before she died.""

"Name?""

Daniel reached for another document.

He placed it on the table.

The signature at the bottom belonged to a woman named Helen Brooks.

I stared at Eleanor.

"Your sister?""

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel nodded.

"She was Richard's financial adviser for years.""

Eleanor looked as if the floor had disappeared beneath her.

"My sister died five years ago.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Her name was used on the accounts until the day she died. But the final authorization was signed by her.""

I looked at the date.

The transaction had occurred four days before her death.

Eleanor sat down.

"She never told me.""

Daniel pushed the paper closer.

"There's another document.""

It was a bank authorization showing that Helen had transferred a portion of the stolen inheritance into a private account.

The account holder was not Richard.

It was a charitable organization operating in Savannah.

Thomas Bennett had mentioned that organization earlier.

I called him immediately.

"Thomas, I need you to check something.""

I read him the organization's name.

There was a long silence.

Then he answered.

"Marcus, that organization isn't controlled by Richard.""

"Who controls it?""

Thomas took a breath.

"Your mother.""

I froze.

"That's impossible. She's been dead for eleven years.""

"I know.""

"Then who is receiving the money?""

Thomas's voice dropped.

"Someone has been using Patricia's identity long after her death.""

I looked at Eleanor.

She whispered:

"Then we haven't found everyone involved.""

May you like

And suddenly, I realized the final enemy might not be someone who wanted my company.

It might be someone who had spent years pretending to be dead.
