Chapter 11: The Recording That Exposed Everything

"Don't move!""

The command came from somewhere near the loading entrance.

Red and blue lights flashed through the warehouse windows.

Daniel dropped the recorder.

Michael pulled me behind a concrete support pillar as another officer entered.

Richard was running toward a side corridor.

Two officers followed him.

"Police! Stop!""

He ignored them.

A second later, a heavy crash echoed through the building.

I heard someone shout that the suspect was down.

Then I turned toward Vanessa.

She was still tied to the chair.

I rushed over and untied her wrists.

"Are you hurt?""

She shook her head.

"I'm okay.""

I helped her stand.

Her legs trembled.

She grabbed my arm.

"Marcus, the recording. You need to listen to the rest.""

I looked toward the workbench.

The digital recorder had fallen beneath a metal shelf.

Daniel was sitting on the floor, his hands behind his head.

An officer was securing his wrists.

"Where's the rest of the recording?"" I asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

I retrieved the device.

Its screen was still illuminated.

There were three audio files.

The first was the one we'd heard.

The second was dated seven years earlier.

I pressed play.

My father's voice returned.

"Daniel, I know you transferred the money.""

Then Richard Whitmore spoke.

"Robert, let's be reasonable.""

My father answered immediately.

"There's nothing reasonable about stealing from your own partner.""

Richard laughed.

"Your sons are young. They need opportunities.""

"Not opportunities built on fraud.""

Then Daniel spoke.

"Dad, you don't understand what we're trying to build.""

"I understand exactly what you're building. A company that belongs to criminals.""

The recording continued.

Richard's voice became colder.

"You should think about your health, Robert.""

I froze.

My father replied:

"Is that a threat?""

"No. It's advice.""

A chair scraped against the floor.

Then came a sentence that made my blood turn cold.

Richard said:

"Your wife understood the arrangement. Why can't you?""

My father slammed something onto the table.

"Patricia is dead. Stop using her name.""

Silence.

Then Richard spoke again.

"Her accounts are still useful.""

The recording ended.

I looked at Eleanor, who had arrived with the officers.

She had heard the final exchange.

"Did you know about this?"" I asked.

She shook her head.

"No.""

I played the third file.

This one was much newer.

It contained a conversation between Daniel and Richard from three weeks earlier.

*Richard:* "The university contract must be approved before Marcus reviews the accounts.""

*Daniel:* "He already suspects something.""

*Richard:* "Then make him sign the transfer.""

*Daniel:* "What if he refuses?""

*Richard:* "Use Vanessa.""

Daniel laughed.

"She's desperate to marry into money.""

Richard replied:

"Then give her enough to keep her desperate.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her head.

The recording continued.

Then Richard said something unexpected.

"Once the ownership transfer is complete, we'll move the remaining eleven million through the foundation account.""

Daniel's voice became nervous.

"That's too risky.""

"Your father hid the original records. Once we locate the accountant, we'll have everything.""

I stopped the recording.

"Thomas Bennett.""

Eleanor nodded.

"The former accountant.""

Michael checked his phone.

"I'll have someone contact him immediately.""

But Daniel suddenly began laughing.

I turned toward him.

"What?""

He shook his head.

"You still don't understand.""

"Then explain.""

Daniel looked directly at me.

"Richard isn't the one who created the original plan.""

I frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

"He's just the man who financed it.""

"Who created it?""

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"Someone in our family.""

I stepped closer.

"Who?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

Then toward Eleanor.

Finally, he said:

"Grandmother.""

I felt the room tilt.

"My grandmother died before Dad.""

"She died, Marcus. But she left instructions.""

"What instructions?""

Daniel looked exhausted.

"She believed your mother had stolen money from the family. She wanted everything recovered.""

"That's impossible.""

"She had records.""

"Records of what?""

Daniel lowered his voice.

"She believed Patricia had secretly transferred eleven million dollars into the foundation before she died.""

I shook my head.

"My mother was never involved in the company's finances.""

"That's what Dad told you.""

"And you believed her?""

Daniel looked at me.

"I believed the documents.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"Daniel, your grandmother's instructions were never legally executed.""

He laughed.

"Because Dad hid them.""

"Where?""

Daniel looked at me.

"Inside the original estate will.""

I remembered the envelope Eleanor had brought to headquarters.

The document my father had left behind.

The one we still hadn't fully examined.

"Then why didn't you tell me earlier?""

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I didn't know what the will contained until Richard showed me a copy.""

"Where did he get it?""

"From someone who had access to the family estate.""

I looked toward Eleanor.

She shook her head.

"I never released that document.""

A police officer approached.

"Mr. Reed, we need to take your brother into custody. We also need your statement.""

I nodded.

Before Daniel was escorted away, he grabbed my sleeve.

"Marcus.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

"Don't trust the person who gave you the will.""

I stared.

"What are you talking about?""

He leaned closer.

"Someone changed the final page.""

Then the officer pulled him away.

I stood motionless.

Eleanor approached.

"Marcus, we need to go through your father's original documents.""

I looked at her.

"Yes.""

She seemed uncomfortable.

"There's something I should tell you first.""

"What?""

She took a long breath.

"I received a phone call from your father two days before he died.""

I waited.

"He told me that if anything happened to him, I should give you the will only after verifying your identity.""

I frowned.

"You know who I am.""

"That's not what he meant.""

She opened her briefcase and removed a small sealed envelope.

"Your father left a private question for you. Only his biological son would know the answer.""

I stared at her.

"What question?""

Eleanor handed me the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten note.

Marcus, what did I tell you on the night you were born?

I looked up.

"I don't remember. I was a baby.""

Eleanor nodded.

"Your father knew you wouldn't.""

"Then what's the point?""

"Your grandmother recorded the answer. She kept it in the family estate.""

I stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because she wanted to prove something about your birth.""

My heart began pounding.

"What are you saying?""

Eleanor looked toward the police officers escorting Daniel.

"Your father believed there was a possibility that the family had been deceived about your biological identity.""

The words barely registered.

I looked at Michael.

He was staring at Eleanor.

Then I turned back.

"Are you telling me my father might not have been my biological father?""

Eleanor didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened the envelope again.

A final sentence had been written beneath the question.

If Marcus is not my biological son, he must never be allowed to inherit the family trust.

I felt my knees weaken.

May you like

Because if that sentence was genuine, everything Daniel had been fighting for might have been built on a secret that had existed long before our company.

And someone had spent years making sure I never discovered it.
