Chapter 6: The Final Step
I read the email three times.
Because my mind refused to accept the words in front of me.
It wasn't a misunderstanding.
It wasn't a family argument.
It wasn't some twisted attempt to "teach Emily respect.""
It was a plan.
A calculated plan.
My father had written every detail.
The timing.
The pressure.
The documents.
Even the dinner.
They wanted me to return later.
Not early.
Not alive to what was happening.
Later.
After Emily signed everything.
After control of my company changed hands.
After they had removed me from my own business.
Emily leaned closer.
"What does it say?""
I looked at her.
"Everything.""
I printed every page.
Then I called my attorney.
James answered on the second ring.
"Michael?""
"James, I need you at my house immediately.""
His voice changed.
"Is everything okay?""
"No.""
I looked at the papers.
"My family tried to steal my company.""
There was a pause.
Then he said:
"I'll be there in twenty minutes.""
While we waited, Emily sat beside me in silence.
Finally, she spoke.
"I need to apologize.""
I looked at her.
"For what?""
"For not telling you sooner.""
I shook my head.
"You were protecting Lily.""
"I should have found a way.""
I took her hand.
"You survived.""
She looked down.
"I was scared they would take her.""
I squeezed her hand.
"They won't.""
For the first time in days, Emily looked at me.
Like she believed me.
Then Lily walked into the room.
She was holding a drawing.
"Daddy, I made this.""
I smiled.
"What is it?""
She handed it to me.
It was our family.
Four people.
Me.
Emily.
Lily.
And a house.
But in the corner, there was something unusual.
A person standing outside.
I pointed.
"Who is this?""
Lily looked at the drawing.
Her face changed.
"That's the man Grandma talked to.""
My smile disappeared.
"What man?""
She pointed at the figure.
"The man who came before you left.""
Emily froze.
I looked at her.
"You saw someone?""
Lily nodded.
"He was angry.""
I knelt beside her.
"What did he say?""
She hugged her rabbit.
"He told Grandma not to worry.""
My heart started beating faster.
"What else?""
Lily whispered:
"He said Daddy would lose everything.""
The room went silent.
Emily looked terrified.
Because this wasn't just about my family.
Someone else was involved.
Someone who had been planning this before I ever boarded that flight.
The doorbell rang.
James had arrived.
I opened the door.
But he wasn't alone.
Behind him stood a woman I hadn't seen in three years.
My former business partner.
The person who disappeared after a lawsuit destroyed her reputation.
The person everyone told me had betrayed me.
She looked directly at me.
"Michael, you need to hear the truth.""
I stared at her.
"Why are you here?""
Her eyes moved toward my family photos on the wall.
Then she said the words I never expected.
"Because your father didn't start this plan.""
May you like
She took a deep breath.
"Your father stole it from me.""
