Chapter 2: The Papers On The Table
I had faced angry investors.
I had walked into meetings where millions of dollars were on the line.
I had negotiated with people who wanted to destroy everything I built.
But nothing prepared me for seeing my own family sitting across from me like enemies.
I carried Lily upstairs first.
Emily followed slowly behind.
Her legs were weak.
Every few steps, I noticed her wince.
I wanted to ask about every injury.
I wanted answers.
But my daughter was holding onto me like if she let go, I would disappear again.
"Daddy?""
I looked down.
"Yes, princess?""
"Are we going to stay here?""
The question hurt more than anything else.
Because this was supposed to be her safest place.
"Our home.""
I kissed her forehead.
"We're leaving if that's what Mommy wants.""
Lily looked toward Emily.
"Mommy was scared.""
Emily looked away.
That was when I realized something.
My wife wasn't just hurt.
She was terrified.
And Emily was not someone who scared easily.
I helped Lily change into pajamas while Emily sat on the edge of the bed.
The silence between us was heavy.
Finally, I asked the question I had been holding back.
"How long?""
Emily looked at me.
"How long what?""
"How long has my family been doing this?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Three weeks.""
I froze.
"Three weeks?""
She nodded.
"They came here after you left for London.""
"Why didn't you call me?""
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I tried.""
That answer stopped me.
"What do you mean?""
Emily looked toward the bedroom door.
"They took my phone.""
My chest tightened.
"They told me if I contacted you, they would make things worse.""
I stood up.
"They threatened you?""
She nodded.
"They said Lily would be taken away from me.""
My hands curled into fists.
"They used our daughter to control you?""
Emily whispered:
"They knew exactly what would hurt me.""
A noise came from downstairs.
Someone laughing.
My family.
Still there.
Still eating.
I walked toward the door.
Emily grabbed my arm.
"Michael, wait.""
I turned.
"What?""
"They want you angry.""
"Good.""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"They want you to make a mistake.""
I stared at her.
"What mistake?""
She looked terrified.
"The papers.""
I remembered what my mother said.
The papers.
"What did they want you to sign?""
Emily reached under the mattress and pulled out a folded envelope.
My stomach dropped.
"How did you keep that?""
"I hid it before they came back.""
I opened it.
Inside were legal documents.
Transfer agreements.
Ownership changes.
My name appeared everywhere.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
My hands started shaking.
They weren't asking Emily to apologize.
They weren't teaching her respect.
They were trying to transfer control of my company.
All of it.
My father walked into the doorway.
Slowly clapping.
"Impressive.""
I turned.
"You went through my wife's room?""
He smiled.
"Your wife has always been dramatic.""
Emily stepped behind me.
My father's eyes moved to the documents.
"You should have signed them when we asked.""
I stared at him.
"When we asked?""
He laughed.
"Michael, don't act surprised.""
My mother appeared behind him.
"You've always been selfish.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Selfish?""
My mother pointed at me.
"You built a company and forgot who helped you.""
I laughed once.
A cold, empty laugh.
"You mean the people who criticized me until I succeeded?""
Ryan stepped forward.
"You think you're better than us.""
"No.""
I looked at him.
"I think you tried to hurt my wife and daughter.""
Ryan's smile faded.
For the first time, he looked uncertain.
Then Vanessa walked into the room holding something.
A small black folder.
She placed it on the bed.
"You should open this too.""
I stared at her.
"What is it?""
She smiled.
"The reason Emily can't prove everything.""
My heart sank.
I opened the folder.
Inside was a printed photograph.
My wife.
Standing outside a bank.
Holding a document.
And underneath the picture was a message written in bold letters.
"PROOF OF HER BETRAYAL.""
I looked at Emily.
Her face went pale.
Because she recognized the picture.
But then she whispered something that made everyone downstairs go silent.
"Michael...""
She pointed at the photograph.
"That picture was taken two years before I even met your family.""
I looked back at Vanessa.
Her smile disappeared.
May you like
And I knew the picture wasn't the evidence they thought it was.
It was the first mistake they made.
