Chapter 11: My Father's Last Confession
My father was waiting in an abandoned office building outside Dallas.
The place looked nothing like the man I knew.
No expensive suit.
No confident smile.
No arrogance.
Just an old man sitting alone with a stack of papers.
When he saw me enter, he immediately stood.
"Michael.""
I stopped several feet away.
"You have five minutes.""
His face fell.
I didn't care.
Not anymore.
He had broken something that couldn't be repaired with apologies.
My father looked at Emily.
Then at Lily, who was safely waiting in the car with a security guard.
His eyes lowered.
"I never wanted this.""
I laughed quietly.
"You don't get to say that.""
He nodded.
"I know.""
For once, he didn't argue.
He placed a folder on the table.
"These are the original agreements.""
James grabbed them immediately.
My father looked at me.
"Richard changed the documents after you signed.""
I stared at him.
"And you helped him.""
His silence was the answer.
My hands tightened.
"Why?""
My father sat down.
"Because I thought I could control him.""
I almost couldn't believe it.
"You thought you could control Richard Vale?""
He nodded.
"I thought he needed me.""
I looked at him.
"He never needed you.""
"No.""
My father looked defeated.
"He used me.""
The room went silent.
He continued.
"Ryan found Richard first. He believed Richard could help him take your company.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Ryan started this?""
My father looked down.
"Yes.""
That hurt more than I expected.
Because despite everything, some part of me still hoped my father had been the only problem.
Not my brother.
Not the person who shared my childhood.
My father continued.
"But when Richard saw the company value, he changed the plan.""
"What plan?""
"He stopped wanting control.""
James looked up.
"Then what did he want?""
My father answered:
"Complete ownership.""
The words hung in the air.
Emily stepped closer.
"So he used all of you.""
My father nodded.
"He used me to get close to Michael. He used Ryan's jealousy. He used Vanessa's greed.""
I looked at him.
"And what about hurting Emily and Lily?""
My father's eyes filled with shame.
"I told them to pressure Emily.""
My heart hardened.
"But I never told them to hurt your daughter.""
I stepped closer.
"That doesn't make you innocent.""
"I know.""
For the first time in my life, I saw my father admit he was wrong.
But it wasn't enough.
Not even close.
Then he pulled out one final document.
"There is something else.""
James took it.
His expression changed immediately.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"Michael...""
"What?""
James handed me the paper.
It was a medical evaluation.
My name.
My signature.
A statement claiming I was mentally unfit to run the company.
I looked at my father.
"What is this?""
His voice was barely audible.
"They planned to remove you completely.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who signed this?""
My father looked away.
"Your mother.""
I couldn't speak.
My mother.
The woman who raised me.
The woman who held me as a child.
She had signed a document declaring her own son incapable.
Then my phone rang.
Emily.
I answered immediately.
Her voice was shaking.
"Michael.""
"What happened?""
"Someone came to the house.""
My heart stopped.
"Who?""
A pause.
Then she whispered:
"Your mother.""
I stood.
"Get away from her.""
"Michael...""
Her voice cracked.
"She's not alone.""
I looked at James.
"Who is with her?""
May you like
Emily answered:
"Richard Vale.""
