Chapter 1: The Dinner I Was Never Invited To
The bouquet of red roses was still warm from my hand when I realized something was terribly wrong.
I had spent two months in London chasing a business deal that could change my family's future. I missed my wife's birthday. I missed bedtime stories with my three-year-old daughter, Lily. I missed the little moments that I promised myself I would never miss.
So I took an earlier flight home.
I didn't tell anyone.
I wanted to walk through the front door of our Dallas mansion, surprise my wife Emily, and watch Lily run into my arms.
I imagined laughter.
I imagined my daughter screaming, "Daddy!""
I imagined my wife crying happy tears.
Instead, I heard champagne glasses.
The sound came from the dining room.
Rich laughter.
The clinking of expensive silverware.
My family was having a celebration.
At first, I smiled.
I thought maybe Emily had planned a surprise party.
Maybe my parents came over.
Maybe everyone was waiting for me.
Then I heard a small voice.
"Daddy?""
Everything inside me stopped.
The flowers slipped slightly in my grip as I turned toward the living room.
And then I saw them.
My wife was sitting on the floor.
Her wrists were tied behind her back.
Her beautiful blue dress was torn, and a dark mark covered one side of her face.
Beside her was Lily.
My little girl.
Her tiny hands were tied together, her cheeks wet with tears, her blonde hair messy as she leaned against her mother's shoulder.
For a few seconds, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Then I saw the dining room.
My father.
My mother.
My older brother Ryan.
His wife, Vanessa.
All of them sitting at my expensive dining table.
Eating steak.
Drinking champagne.
Laughing.
Like nothing was happening.
I dropped the roses.
"What the hell is going on?""
My voice shook the entire room.
My mother slowly placed her wineglass down.
Her expression changed from relaxed to annoyed.
"Michael? You're supposed to still be in London.""
I didn't answer.
I ran to Lily.
"Daddy's here," I whispered.
My hands shook as I pulled out my pocketknife.
"Daddy, please," Lily cried.
"My hands hurt.""
"I know, sweetheart. I'm going to get you out.""
I carefully cut through the rope around her wrists.
She immediately wrapped her arms around my neck.
Her tiny body was trembling.
"Mommy was crying," she whispered.
My heart felt like it had been crushed.
I moved to Emily and cut her restraints.
She fell forward into my arms.
"Michael...""
Her voice was barely a whisper.
"Who did this to you?""
Before she could answer, my father slammed his fist onto the table.
"Don't you dare come into my house and accuse people!""
I slowly turned around.
"Your house?""
My eyes moved around the room.
The marble floors.
The expensive furniture.
The paintings.
Everything I had paid for.
"I bought this mansion.""
Ryan stood up, laughing.
"Maybe you should ask your wife what happened before you start acting like a hero.""
My jaw tightened.
"What are you talking about?""
My mother pointed at Emily.
"She betrayed this family.""
Emily looked down.
"That's a lie.""
My mother's eyes narrowed.
"She stole money from us and refused to admit it.""
I stared at my wife.
"Emily?""
She shook her head.
"I never stole anything.""
Ryan walked closer.
"Of course she would say that.""
I stepped between him and my wife.
"Back away.""
He smiled.
"You really don't know anything, do you?""
My mother folded her arms.
"We were teaching her a lesson.""
I looked at Lily.
Then I looked at my mother.
"You tied up my wife.""
Silence.
"And my daughter.""
Nobody spoke.
I pointed toward Lily.
"She's three years old.""
My father shrugged.
"She wasn't the target.""
The room became cold.
I could barely breathe.
"She wasn't the target?""
I looked at the table.
There was enough food for twenty people.
Steak.
Desserts.
Champagne.
And beside the dining table was a small empty plate on the floor.
For Emily and Lily.
My daughter's voice broke the silence.
"Grandma said we couldn't eat until Mommy signed the papers.""
I slowly turned toward my mother.
"What papers?""
For the first time that night, her confidence disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
And I knew.
Something much bigger was happening.
I helped Emily stand.
"What did they force you to sign?""
Emily looked at my family.
Then she looked at me.
Her eyes filled with fear.
"Michael... they weren't trying to punish me.""
She swallowed.
"They were trying to take something from you.""
My father stood up.
"Enough.""
But Emily continued.
"They wanted the company.""
The room went silent.
My company.
The one I built from nothing.
The one my family always said they were proud of.
Ryan laughed softly.
"You finally found out.""
I stared at him.
"Found out what?""
He picked up his champagne glass.
"That your family is tired of watching you control everything.""
My hand tightened around Lily.
May you like
Then Ryan smiled.
"And tonight was supposed to be the night you lost it all.""
