Chapter 5: The Person Who Sold Me Out
I didn't sleep that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Lily sitting on that floor.
I saw Emily's bruised face.
I saw my family eating dinner while my wife and daughter were treated like prisoners.
But one thought kept returning.
Someone had given them information.
Someone told them when I would be gone.
Someone knew my schedule.
At 6:00 in the morning, I was already sitting in my office.
The same office where I had built my company.
The same place where I had celebrated my first million-dollar contract.
Now I was looking at security footage.
Emily sat beside me.
Lily was with our nanny, safe in another room.
I watched the recordings from the week before my trip.
Nothing.
Then I saw something.
Three days before I left.
My assistant, Claire, entered my office.
She looked nervous.
She opened my calendar.
My travel information.
My flight details.
I paused the video.
Emily looked at me.
"Do you know her?""
I nodded slowly.
"She's worked for me for five years.""
"Could she be involved?""
I didn't want to believe it.
Claire had been there when my company was only three employees.
She had helped me survive impossible deadlines.
But the truth was sitting on the screen.
She had accessed information she shouldn't have.
I called her.
She answered quickly.
"Michael? You're back already?""
The question bothered me.
"How did you know I was back?""
Silence.
Only two seconds.
But I heard it.
Fear.
"I saw the news.""
"There is no news about me coming home.""
Another silence.
Then:
"Michael, what's going on?""
I leaned back.
"That's what I'm trying to find out.""
She didn't answer.
I ended the call.
Ten minutes later, she arrived.
Claire walked into my office looking pale.
"Michael, I can explain.""
I stared at her.
"Start.""
She looked at Emily.
Then looked away.
"I didn't know they would hurt anyone.""
My blood went cold.
"You knew?""
Claire started crying.
"I thought they only wanted the company documents.""
I stood up.
"You knew my family was planning something against me?""
She shook her head.
"I thought it was just a legal dispute.""
Emily's voice was sharp.
"They tied up a three-year-old child.""
Claire looked down.
"I didn't know.""
I walked closer.
"Who contacted you?""
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
"Your father.""
The room became silent.
"Why?""
Claire wiped her tears.
"He told me your company was unstable. He said you were making reckless decisions and needed family intervention.""
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
"My father convinced you?""
She looked ashamed.
"He said he was protecting you.""
I turned toward the window.
Protecting me.
That was the excuse everyone used.
Every betrayal came wrapped in a lie about love.
"Where are the original documents?"" I asked.
Claire looked confused.
"What documents?""
"The ones they wanted Emily to sign.""
She hesitated.
Then reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
"I copied something before they took control of the paperwork.""
Emily stood up.
"What is that?""
Claire looked terrified.
"Something your father didn't want Michael to see.""
I took the drive.
"What's on it?""
Claire lowered her voice.
"Records showing your family planned this months ago.""
I plugged it into my computer.
A folder appeared.
Inside were emails.
Hundreds of them.
Dates.
Names.
Plans.
Then I opened the newest message.
The sender was my father.
The subject line made my entire body freeze.
"Final Step: Remove Michael Permanently.""
Emily grabbed my hand.
"Michael...""
I clicked the email.

The first sentence appeared.
And I knew whatever was inside would change everything.
