Chapter 4: The Secret Account
I stared at the photograph in my hand until the edges started to bend from how tightly I was holding it.
Two years before Emily met my family.
That single fact destroyed everything they had built.
My father, who had been standing so confidently moments earlier, suddenly looked uncomfortable.
Ryan avoided my eyes.
And Vanessa, who had walked in carrying that folder like she was delivering the final blow, slowly stepped backward.
I noticed.
People who believe they have won don't step backward.
People who realize they made a mistake do.
"Where did you get this?"" I asked.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Someone sent it to us.""
"Who?""
She hesitated.
Just for a moment.
But it was enough.
I placed the photo on the bed.
"Interesting.""
My father frowned.
"What is interesting?""
"That you keep saying Emily betrayed this family, but none of you can explain a picture that proves absolutely nothing.""
My mother scoffed.
"You are defending her without knowing the truth.""
I looked at her.
"No. I'm asking for proof.""
The room went silent.
Because for the first time, they had no answer.
Emily stepped beside me.
Her voice was quiet.
"But I know why they used that picture.""
I turned toward her.
"Why?""
She looked at my family.
"Because they knew the real documents would expose them.""
My father's expression changed.
"What documents?""
Emily looked at me.
"Michael, before they tied me up tonight, I found something.""
She walked to the closet and pulled out a small bag hidden behind a stack of blankets.
Inside were copies of bank statements.
Contracts.
Emails.
I opened the first page.
My stomach dropped.
A private account.
A company account.
Money transfers.
Large amounts.
And every transaction led to one place.
A consulting company I had never heard of.
"Who owns this?"" I asked.
Emily swallowed.
"Ryan.""
My brother immediately laughed.
"That's ridiculous.""
I turned another page.
The account name was listed.
Ryan Callahan Consulting.
My own brother.
"You created a fake company?""
Ryan's face hardened.
"It's not fake.""
"Then why did millions leave my company and go there?""
Nobody answered.
My mother stepped forward.
"Michael, you don't understand business.""
I looked at her.
"Apparently, I understand it better than you.""
The insult hit harder than I expected.
Because my entire life, I had wanted their approval.
I wanted my father to tell me he was proud.
I wanted my mother to see me as more than a wallet.
But standing there, looking at my injured wife and frightened daughter, I finally understood something.
They didn't want me.
They wanted what I had.
A sound came from the hallway.
A small voice.
"Daddy?""
I turned immediately.
Lily was standing there holding her stuffed rabbit.
I rushed to her.
"Sweetheart, why are you awake?""
She looked past me toward my family.
"Is Grandma angry?""
I knelt down.
"No.""
I looked at my mother.
Then back at Lily.
"Grandma made some bad choices.""
Lily hugged her rabbit.
"She said Mommy was a bad person.""
Emily covered her mouth.
I felt something break inside me.
A child shouldn't know those words.
Not about her own mother.
I stood up.
"Everyone leaves.""
My father stared at me.
"You are throwing us out?""
"I am.""
"This is our family home.""
"No.""
I pointed toward the door.
"This is my family's home. And my family is my wife and daughter.""
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"You really think this ends here?""
I looked at him.
"What does that mean?""
He smiled.
"You still haven't seen what we have.""
My eyes narrowed.
"What else?""
Ryan walked toward the door.
"Tomorrow morning, you'll find out why you were never supposed to come home tonight.""
After they left, I locked every door.
Every window.
Every entrance.
Then I sat beside Lily's bed until she fell asleep.
Emily sat across from me.
Neither of us spoke for a long time.
Finally, she whispered:
"Michael.""
"Yes?""
"I need to tell you something.""
I looked up.
"What?""
Her hands trembled.
"When they came here three weeks ago, they weren't alone.""
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?""
She looked toward the window.
"There was someone else helping them.""
"Who?""
Emily took a deep breath.
"The person who told them exactly when you would be gone.""
I felt cold.
May you like
Because only a few people knew my travel schedule.
And one of them was someone I trusted completely.
