Chapter 9: The Truth About Sophia’s Mother

I didn't sleep that night.

Not because I couldn't.

Because every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same thing.

My first wife smiling.

Holding Sophia.

Telling me everything would be okay.

And then disappearing from my life forever.

For years, I had carried that pain.

But I had never questioned the story.

A car accident.

A tragic loss.

A chapter of my life I couldn't rewrite.

Now someone was telling me the entire chapter had been fabricated.

Marcus found the old case file before sunrise.

He placed it on my desk.

"I had someone reopen the investigation.""

I opened the folder.

The first page was the official report.

The second page was different.

A witness statement that had never been included.

I read the first line.

"My name is Daniel Russo. I saw another vehicle near the crash site.""

My eyes moved quickly.

The witness claimed a black SUV followed my wife's car before the accident.

The report was dismissed.

Reason:

"Unreliable witness.""

I looked at Marcus.

"Who dismissed it?""

He hesitated.

"The investigator.""

"The same investigator who resigned?""

Marcus nodded.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

Someone had been cleaning everything.

Removing evidence.

Controlling the story.

Then I saw something else.

A photograph.

My wife's car.

The damage.

The road.

And something written behind the picture.

A date.

The day before the accident.

Marcus noticed my expression.

"What?""

I handed him the photo.

He stared.

"That's impossible.""

"Why?""

"Because this photo was taken before the crash.""

I looked closer.

There was someone standing beside the car.

A man.

Blurred.

But recognizable.

I knew that face.

Adrian.

My brother.

I felt sick.

"No.""

Marcus didn't speak.

Because he knew.

The evidence was pointing somewhere I didn't want to look.

I called Adrian.

He answered after one ring.

"Vincent.""

"Where were you the day my wife died?""

Silence.

A long silence.

Then:

"I knew you would ask.""

I closed my eyes.

"Answer me.""

"I was there.""

The words crushed everything.

"You were there?""

"I was trying to stop it.""

"Stop what?""

Adrian's voice cracked.

"The plan.""

I stood.

"What plan?""

He took a breath.

"Antonio wanted control of the family. He believed you were too soft after becoming a father.""

My hands trembled.

"And Vanessa?""

"She was supposed to marry you.""

The room became cold.

"Why?""

"Because Antonio believed she could control you.""

I stared at the wall.

My entire marriage.

A trap.

My daughter's fear.

A plan years in the making.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Adrian whispered:

"Because I was afraid.""

I laughed quietly.

"You were afraid?""

"Of him.""

For the first time, I heard real fear in Adrian's voice.

"Vincent, you don't understand. Antonio doesn't threaten people.""

A pause.

"He destroys them.""

Before I could respond, Marcus rushed into the room.

"Boss.""

I looked up.

"What?""

He held up a phone.

"We traced Antonio's location.""

My heart stopped.

"Where?""

Marcus looked at the screen.

"An old property outside the city.""

I grabbed my coat.

"Let's go.""

Marcus didn't move.

"Vincent.""

"What?""

He looked serious.

"There's something else.""

I waited.

"The property records.""

He handed me the file.

I looked down.

The owner name was listed.

My blood ran cold.

Because the property wasn't owned by Antonio.

It wasn't owned by Vanessa.

It wasn't owned by Adrian.

It was owned by someone else.

Someone I trusted completely.

Someone who had been helping me investigate the betrayal.

I looked at Marcus.

The words barely came out.

"How long have you known?""

His face changed.

And for the first time in twenty years...

May you like

I wasn't sure if the man standing beside me was my protector.

Or my final enemy.
