Chapter 7: The Shadow Inside My House

I had spent my entire life studying enemies.

I knew how they moved.

How they lied.

How they smiled while planning your destruction.

But the hardest enemy to recognize was the one who already knew where you kept your secrets.

Because you never searched for danger inside the people you loved.

I stood at the bottom of the stairs, staring toward the second floor.

Sophia was upstairs.

Marcus was beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

The silence felt heavier than any threat.

"Boss," Marcus finally said, "you don't think...""

I interrupted him.

"I don't know what I think.""

And that scared me.

Because I always knew.

In business, hesitation got people hurt.

In my personal life, trust had made me blind.

Marcus looked at the note again.

"The handwriting matches the old files.""

I looked at him.

"You're sure?""

He nodded slowly.

"The signature at the bottom is identical.""

I took the paper back.

The name stared at me.

A name that should have belonged only to the past.

A name connected to my father's death.

A name I buried years ago.

Antonio Moretti.

My father.

But Antonio Moretti had been dead for twelve years.

Or at least...

That was what everyone believed.

"I need the original accident report," I said.

Marcus looked surprised.

"The car crash?""

"Yes.""

"You think someone arranged it?""

I looked toward the window.

"I think I've been chasing the wrong person.""

Within an hour, Marcus had every file from the accident.

We sat in my office while rain hit the glass.

The report was simple.

Too simple.

A drunk driver.

A collision.

A tragic accident.

But when Marcus placed the final page on the table, I noticed something.

A small handwritten note from the investigator.

"Vehicle malfunction suspected.""

I looked up.

"Why wasn't this followed?""

Marcus flipped through the pages.

"Because the investigator resigned two days later.""

I leaned back.

Everything suddenly connected.

The accident.

The wheelchair.

Vanessa.

The poisoning.

Someone had built this carefully.

They didn't want me dead immediately.

They wanted me weak.

They wanted me isolated.

They wanted me to doubt myself.

A sound came from the hallway.

I turned.

Sophia stood there.

Her face was pale.

"Daddy?""

I immediately softened.

"What happened?""

She walked closer.

"I heard you talking.""

I looked at her.

"Did you hear anything else?""

She nodded.

"I heard the name.""

My heart tightened.

"What name?""

She looked down.

"Grandpa Antonio.""

The room went silent.

I knelt beside her.

"Sophia...""

She hesitated.

"Before Mommy Vanessa came, I saw someone visit the house.""

I froze.

"When?""

She thought carefully.

"Before the accident.""

Marcus and I exchanged a look.

"Who was it?""

Sophia hugged herself.

"I don't know.""

Her voice became smaller.

"But Vanessa called him something.""

"What?""

Sophia whispered:

"She called him Father.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because Vanessa had no reason to call Antonio her father.

Unless...

Unless there was something I didn't know.

The next morning, I went to confront Vanessa.

Not because I expected honesty.

But because I needed to see her reaction.

She was sitting in a private room at the courthouse.

Her lawyer was beside her.

When she saw me walk in, her smile disappeared.

"You shouldn't be here.""

I sat across from her.

"Who is Antonio Moretti?""

For the first time since I met her...

Vanessa looked afraid.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

"You know that name.""

She recovered quickly.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

I leaned forward.

"You called him Father.""

Her face changed.

The lawyer looked at her.

Vanessa stayed silent.

Then she smiled.

"You finally found out.""

My fingers tightened.

"Found out what?""

She looked directly into my eyes.

"That your family has been lying to you your entire life.""

I stood.

"Explain.""

She leaned back.

"Ask your brother.""

The room went quiet.

My jaw tightened.

"Adrian?""

Vanessa smiled.

"He knows the truth.""

I left without another word.

When I returned home, Adrian was waiting.

He looked exhausted.

Like he had been expecting me.

"You know," I said.

He didn't pretend.

"Yes.""

The answer hit harder than I expected.

"Tell me everything.""

Adrian looked away.

"You won't believe me.""

"Try.""

He took a deep breath.

"Antonio Moretti never died.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

"He disappeared.""

Adrian looked at me.

"And everyone was told he was dead because he wanted the world to believe it.""

I stepped closer.

"Why?""

Adrian swallowed.

"Because he was preparing to take back everything.""

I stared at him.

"Everything from who?""

Adrian looked at me.

"From you.""

Before I could answer, every light in the house went out.

The security alarms screamed.

Marcus reached for his phone.

Then Sophia screamed upstairs.

I ran.

Not pretending.

Not hiding.

Running.

When I reached her room, the window was open.

The curtains moved in the wind.

Sophia was gone.

And on her bed was a note.

May you like

Three words.

COME FIND YOUR FATHER.
