Chapter 3: The Secret File

I spent my entire life preparing for enemies outside my home.

I never prepared for one sleeping beside me.

The next morning, Vanessa acted like nothing happened.

She walked into the kitchen wearing a silk robe, smiling as if she hadn't slapped my daughter the day before.

"Good morning," she said.

I watched her carefully.

"Morning.""

Sophia sat beside me quietly.

She didn't look at Vanessa.

Not once.

Vanessa noticed.

"Sophia, say good morning.""

Sophia stayed silent.

Vanessa's smile tightened.

"Did you hear me?""

I placed my hand on Sophia's shoulder.

"She's tired.""

Vanessa looked at me.

For a moment, I saw something behind her eyes.

Suspicion.

Then it disappeared.

"Of course.""

She poured coffee.

"I know this has been difficult for everyone.""

I almost laughed.

Difficult?

My daughter was afraid to speak in her own home.

"You seem worried," I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

"About you.""

She walked closer.

"I just want my husband healthy again.""

Her hand touched my shoulder.

I forced myself not to react.

Because every part of me wanted to pull away.

Later that afternoon, Marcus arrived with the test results.

We met in the basement.

His face was serious.

"What is it?""

He placed the folder down.

"The substance in the juice isn't enough to kill immediately.""

I stared at him.

"What does it do?""

"Over time, it causes weakness, confusion, memory issues.""

My jaw tightened.

"She wanted people to think my condition was getting worse.""

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly.""

A cold anger moved through me.

Vanessa wasn't rushing.

She was building a story.

A story where Vincent Moretti was a helpless man who couldn't protect himself.

"What about the documents?"" I asked.

Marcus opened another folder.

"We traced what she was looking for.""

Inside was a copy of an old legal document.

Sophia's trust agreement.

I stared at the page.

When Sophia was born, I created a protected account for her.

Not for my business.

Not for my family name.

For her future.

Marcus pointed at the signature.

"She can't access it without your approval.""

"So she's trying to make me incapable.""

"Yes.""

The room felt smaller.

Then my phone rang.

It was Sophia's school.

My heart immediately dropped.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A nervous voice responded.

"Mr. Moretti, we're calling because Vanessa came to pick up Sophia early today.""

I stood instantly.

"She what?""

The woman paused.

"She said you approved it.""

I looked at Marcus.

"When?""

"About twenty minutes ago.""

I ended the call.

For the first time in months, I didn't pretend.

I moved.

Fast.

Marcus followed.

We rushed upstairs.

The house was empty.

No Sophia.

No Vanessa.

Only a note sitting on the kitchen counter.

My hands shook as I picked it up.

The handwriting was Vanessa's.

Vincent,

You should have stayed broken.

I read the sentence again.

My heart stopped.

Then I saw the second line.

You were always too proud to admit you needed someone.

The final sentence was written below.

Now everyone will see what kind of father you really are.

I crushed the paper.

Marcus looked toward the front door.

"Boss...""

I looked up.

A car was leaving the driveway.

Vanessa was inside.

And in the back seat...

Sophia was crying.

I grabbed my coat.

The wheelchair sat behind me.

For three months, I had let the world believe I couldn't walk.

But Vanessa had made one mistake.

She threatened the one person I would destroy everything to protect.

My daughter.

I stepped forward.

May you like

And this time...

I didn't hide.
