Chapter 14: The Truth My Wife Hid
I couldn't move.
I couldn't speak.
The woman standing in the doorway looked exactly like the person I had spent twelve years mourning.
My first wife.
Sophia's mother.
My mind rejected what my eyes were seeing.
"No.""
The word escaped before I could stop it.
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Vincent.""
That voice.
I remembered that voice.
Every morning.
Every night.
Every moment before everything fell apart.
I stepped back.
"This isn't possible.""
She walked closer.
"I wanted to come home.""
My chest tightened.
"Then why didn't you?""
She looked down.
"Because I couldn't.""
The room was silent.
Even Vanessa stopped smiling.
My wife looked at Sophia.
And everything changed.
Sophia stared back.
She didn't understand.
She only saw a stranger.
But somehow...
A part of her knew.
"Who are you?""
The question broke my heart.
Her mother covered her mouth.
"I...""
She couldn't finish.
I looked at Vanessa.
"You knew.""
Vanessa smiled slightly.
"Of course.""
My anger returned.
"Explain.""
She shrugged.
"Your wife discovered Antonio's plan.""
My wife interrupted.
"I discovered all of them.""
She looked at Antonio.
"The lies. The money. The manipulation.""
Antonio looked away.
She continued.
"I tried to expose him.""
I stared at her.
"But the accident.""
She nodded.
"It wasn't an accident.""
The words felt like another wound opening.
"Who?""
Nobody answered.
Then my wife looked at Adrian.
My heart sank.
"No.""
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I was young.""
I stared at him.
"You were my brother.""
"I know.""
"You watched me bury her.""
Tears filled Adrian's eyes.
"I thought she was dead.""
My wife shook her head.
"No.""
Everyone looked at her.
"Adrian saved me.""
I froze.
"What?""
She looked at me.
"He helped me escape after the crash.""
I didn't understand.
"He helped you?""
She nodded.
"But he was too afraid to tell you.""
Adrian looked broken.
"I thought Antonio would kill you. Kill Sophia.""
My anger mixed with confusion.
"So you let me believe she was dead?""
Adrian whispered:
"I thought I was protecting you.""
I looked away.
Because for the first time, I saw the full picture.
Adrian wasn't innocent.
But he wasn't the monster I thought.
He was someone who made a terrible choice.
A choice that destroyed all of us.
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
"You all still don't understand.""
She stepped forward.
"You're fighting over old secrets.""
She pointed at Sophia.
"The real prize is her.""
My wife moved instantly.
"Stay away from my daughter.""
Vanessa smiled.
"Your daughter?""
She looked at me.
"You still don't know.""
I frowned.
"What?""
Vanessa opened another folder.
"Vincent.""
She placed the papers on the table.
"Read them.""
I picked them up.
The first page was a DNA report.
My eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
No.
Impossible.
I read it again.
My hands began shaking.
Sophia wasn't my biological daughter.
The room went silent.
My wife looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"Vincent...""
I couldn't hear anything.
The child I raised.
The child I protected.
The child I loved more than my own life.
The world suddenly felt like it was falling apart.
Vanessa smiled.
"There it is.""
She looked satisfied.
"The truth that will destroy you.""
Sophia looked at me.
"Daddy?""
That one word broke through everything.
I looked at her.
Not the paper.
Not the DNA test.
Her.
The little girl who called me father.
The little girl who saved my life.
I dropped the document.
And walked toward her.
Vanessa frowned.
"What are you doing?""
I picked Sophia up.
And held her tightly.
"She's my daughter.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Biology says—"
"I don't care.""
My voice shook the room.
"I was there when she cried.""
I looked at Sophia.
"I was there when she took her first steps.""
Tears filled my eyes.
"I was there when she called me Daddy.""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Blood doesn't make a father.""
Silence.
Then my wife started crying.
But Vanessa wasn't defeated.
Because she had one more card.
She smiled.
"Beautiful speech.""
She stepped back.
"But you still don't know who Sophia's real father is.""
The room froze.
Vanessa looked at Antonio.
Then at Adrian.
May you like
And whispered:
"Because he's standing right here.""
