Chapter 11: The Secret Behind the Accident
I stared at the name on the photograph.
My hands didn't shake because I was afraid.
They shook because my mind was trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.
The name belonged to someone I had trusted.
Someone I had defended.
Someone I had called family.
Adrian.
My brother.
But the evidence wasn't enough.
Not yet.
Because a lifetime of loyalty doesn't disappear because of one piece of paper.
I looked at Marcus.
"Tell me everything.""
Marcus stayed quiet.
"Now.""
He took a deep breath.
"Adrian was involved with Antonio years ago.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"How long?""
"Since before your father's disappearance.""
I walked toward the window.
Rain covered the city.
The same city where I had built everything.
The same city where people smiled while hiding knives.
"Why?""
Marcus answered quietly.
"Because Adrian believed Antonio would make him powerful.""
I closed my eyes.
All those years.
All those warnings.
I had protected Adrian because I thought he was weak.
Maybe he was never weak.
Maybe he was just waiting.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
A location.
No words.
Just coordinates.
Marcus looked at the screen.
"It's a warehouse.""
"Antonio?""
"I think so.""
I grabbed my jacket.
Marcus followed.
This time, I didn't stop him.
Because I needed answers.
The warehouse sat near the edge of the city.
Old.
Abandoned.
Exactly the kind of place where secrets survived.
We entered quietly.
The first room was empty.
The second room was empty.
Then we heard something.
A child's voice.
"Daddy?""
My heart stopped.
"Sophia.""
I ran.
She was sitting in a chair.
Alone.
Safe.
The moment she saw me, she broke down.
"Daddy!""
I held her tightly.
"I'm here.""
She buried her face against me.
"I knew you would come.""
I closed my eyes.
For a moment, nothing else mattered.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
A man entered the room.
Older.
Gray hair.
But the same eyes I remembered.
Antonio Moretti.
My father.
Alive.
"You got taller.""
The words were almost casual.
I stared at him.
"You died.""
He smiled.
"That was the idea.""
My anger burned.
"You let me believe you were dead.""
"I needed you to become strong.""
I stepped forward.
"You destroyed my life.""
Antonio looked at Sophia.
"No.""
His voice became cold.
"You destroyed your own life when you chose love over power.""
I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"You think this was my fault?""
"You became soft.""
I laughed.
A quiet, angry laugh.
"You mean I became a father.""
Antonio shook his head.
"Exactly.""
Sophia held my hand tighter.
Antonio noticed.
"You see? She is your weakness.""
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at him.
"No.""
I stepped forward.
"She's the reason I survived.""
For the first time, Antonio looked uncertain.
Then he smiled.
"Your mother said the same thing.""
I froze.
"My mother?""
Antonio nodded.
"You never knew the truth about your family.""
I stared at him.
"What are you talking about?""
He walked toward a table.
Placed on it was an old file.
"This is why everything happened.""
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Birth records.
Financial records.
And one photograph.
A photograph of my mother.
Standing beside Antonio.
And another person.
My first wife's mother.
I looked at Antonio.
"What is this?""
He stared at me.
"The reason your marriage was never an accident.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
Antonio pointed to the documents.
"Your wife wasn't chosen because of you.""
I looked down.
The final page contained a name.
A connection I had never known.
Antonio whispered:
"She was chosen because of what she inherited.""
I turned the page.
And saw the truth.
May you like
Sophia wasn't just my daughter.
She was the last person standing between two families fighting for control.
