Chapter 5: The Brother Who Betrayed Me

I thought Vanessa was the worst betrayal I would ever face.

I was wrong.

Because betrayal from an enemy hurts.

But betrayal from family cuts deeper.

Adrian had been beside me since we were children.

When our father died, I protected him.

When he made mistakes, I covered them.

When people doubted him, I defended him.

And now he stood in a room with the woman who tried to destroy my life.

"Sophia, close your eyes," I said gently.

She looked confused.

"Why?""

"Because Daddy needs to handle something.""

She nodded.

She trusted me.

That trust was the only thing keeping me calm.

I turned back toward Adrian.

"How long?""

He looked down.

"Vincent...""

"How long?""

His shoulders lowered.

"Six months.""

Six months.

I felt something break inside me.

"You knew her before she met me?""

Adrian didn't answer.

Vanessa did.

"We were planning everything before the wedding.""

The words hit harder than any weapon.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You married me as part of a plan.""

She crossed her arms.

"You made yourself impossible to reach. You surrounded yourself with people who feared you. You thought nobody could hurt you.""

She stepped closer.

"I proved you wrong.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

I looked at Sophia.

"You proved you were willing to hurt a child.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Only for a second.

Then her expression hardened.

"Children are leverage.""

The room became silent.

Even Adrian looked shocked.

Marcus quietly moved closer.

I saw his anger.

But I raised my hand.

Not yet.

I needed the truth.

"Why Sophia?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Because she was your weakness.""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"You never cared about her.""

"No.""

The answer came too easily.

"I cared about what she represented.""

The trust fund.

The inheritance.

The protection.

Everything.

I looked at Adrian.

"And you?""

He finally looked at me.

"I was tired of being your shadow.""

There it was.

The truth.

Not money.

Not power.

Jealousy.

"I gave you everything.""

"You gave me leftovers," Adrian snapped.

His voice became louder.

"Everyone knew your name. Everyone respected you. I was always just Vincent's brother.""

I stared at him.

"You could have told me.""

He laughed bitterly.

"And what? Ask for permission to matter?""

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Then I looked at Sophia.

And I remembered what he helped do.

The sympathy disappeared.

"You brought my daughter here.""

Adrian looked away.

"I didn't touch her.""

"But you helped someone who did.""

That silence was his answer.

Suddenly, Sophia spoke.

"Uncle Adrian?""

Everyone turned.

She looked at him with tears in her eyes.

"Why did you let her scare me?""

Adrian froze.

For a moment, he looked like the little brother I remembered.

Ashamed.

Guilty.

But then Vanessa stepped between them.

"Enough.""

She grabbed the papers.

"We're leaving.""

Marcus blocked the door.

"No.""

Vanessa smiled.

"You think this ends here?""

She pulled out her phone.

I watched her face.

She wasn't scared anymore.

That bothered me.

"What did you do?""

She tapped the screen.

A few seconds later, my phone rang.

It was my attorney.

I answered.

"Vincent...""

His voice sounded panicked.

"Something happened.""

"What?""

"Your company accounts have been frozen.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Who authorized it?""

A pause.

Then:

"Your wife.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She smiled.

"You spent months pretending to be powerless.""

She stepped backward.

"Now I'm going to show you what powerless really feels like.""

The call ended.

Marcus checked his phone.

"Boss...""

I looked at him.

"What?""

His face was pale.

"She's not just freezing your accounts.""

He swallowed.

"She's releasing something to the media.""

My chest tightened.

"What?""

Marcus looked at the screen.

A headline was already spreading online.

VINCENT MORETTI UNFIT TO CONTROL HIS OWN EMPIRE.

I stared at Vanessa.

She had planned every move.

The poisoning.

The fake documents.

The kidnapping.

All of it.

But she made one mistake.

She thought destroying my reputation meant destroying me.

She didn't know I had spent thirty years surviving people exactly like her.

I walked toward her.

And whispered:

"You should have learned one thing about me.""

She stared.

"What?""

I smiled.

"When someone attacks my family...""

May you like

I looked at Sophia.

"...I stop playing by the rules.""
