Chapter 9: The Man Patricia Tried to Erase
Emily was shaking.
Michael immediately called the police in Austin and requested an incident report.
"Did you lock the document away?"" he asked.
"Yes. It was in a fireproof box.""
"Was anything else missing?""
"No. My laptop, jewelry, and cash were untouched.""
Rachel frowned.
"Then whoever broke in knew exactly what they wanted.""
I looked at Emily.
"Did anyone know you had the document?""
She shook her head.
"Only Patricia.""
The room fell silent.
Michael closed his laptop.
"That makes her the obvious person we need to investigate, but we shouldn't assume she personally entered the apartment.""
I stared at the photograph of Patricia and Daniel's father.
"Who is Charles Whitmore?""
Michael explained that Charles had been a successful property developer who worked alongside my grandfather for nearly twenty years.
He had married Patricia in the early 1990s.
The marriage ended after financial disagreements.
According to public records, Charles died in a vehicle accident in 2001.
But my father's letter claimed otherwise.
Emily opened her phone.
"I found something last night.""
She showed us a public business registration.
A man named Charles White owned a property consultancy in San Antonio.
The company had been established fifteen years earlier.
The birth date listed for its owner matched Charles Whitmore's.
Michael studied the record.
"That could be a coincidence.""
"Maybe," Emily replied.
"But look at the registered address.""
It was the same address written in my father's letter.
I looked at Michael.
"We need to contact him.""
He hesitated.
"We'll do it through the appropriate channels.""
Within an hour, Michael had reached an attorney in San Antonio who represented the property consultancy.
After verifying our identities and explaining the estate dispute, the attorney agreed to pass along a message.
We waited.
At 2:35 p.m., Michael received a call.
He listened quietly.
Then he looked at me.
"Mr. Whitmore is willing to meet.""
My heart started racing.
"When?""
"Tomorrow morning. He wants both you and Emily present.""
I nodded.
But before we could leave, a message appeared on Emily's phone.
It was from an unknown number.
Tell Sarah to stop digging. Her father made a mistake by trusting her.
Emily showed me the message.
Then another arrived.
Ask her what happened to the original trust certificate.
I stared at the screen.
"What original trust certificate?""
Emily looked confused.
Michael immediately opened the documents from the bank.
He scanned the inventory list.
Then he stopped.
"There's a missing item.""
"What?""
"Your father mentioned an original trust certificate. It isn't among the documents in the safe deposit box.""
I remembered the black box Daniel had taken from my office.
My stomach dropped.
"That's what was inside.""
Michael nodded slowly.
"Possibly.""
I opened the security footage again.
Daniel had taken the box two nights before the birthday dinner.
Patricia had been standing beside him.
And now someone had broken into Emily's apartment.
The timing was too precise to ignore.
That evening, I received a call from Vanessa.
I almost rejected it.
But something told me to answer.
"Sarah, please don't hang up.""
"What do you want?""
"I need to tell you something about Daniel.""
"Is he finally admitting what he did?""
She ignored the question.
"Patricia is furious. She's been calling him all day.""
"That's not my problem.""
"Sarah, I know you think I'm the enemy.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You're sleeping with my husband.""
"He's not your husband anymore.""
I went silent.
Vanessa continued.
"He told me he filed for divorce last week.""
My stomach tightened.
"He filed for divorce?""
"Yes. He said he was going to leave you once the property transfer was complete.""
I looked at Michael, who was sitting across from me.
"Did he tell you about the trust?""
Vanessa hesitated.
"He said there was a certificate. Something that would give him access to the properties.""
"Did he get it?""
"I don't know.""
I could hear someone moving in the background.
Then Vanessa whispered.
"Sarah, I need you to understand something. Daniel isn't doing this because he loves me.""
"Then why?""
"Because Patricia promised him something.""
"What?""
"The truth about his father.""
I froze.
Vanessa continued.
"Patricia told him that his biological father left him a fortune. But Daniel can only claim it if he gets control of your grandfather's properties first.""
I gripped the phone.
"That makes no sense.""
"I know. But Daniel believes her.""
"Does he know about Charles Whitmore?""
There was a long pause.
Then Vanessa said something unexpected.
"He knows the name.""
"How?""
"Because Patricia has been receiving money from him for years.""
I stared at the wall.
"Receiving money?""
"Yes. Every few months, a payment arrives. Daniel handles the transfers.""
I felt sick.
"How much?""
"Sometimes five thousand. Sometimes twenty thousand.""
"And where does the money come from?""
Vanessa whispered.
"An account belonging to Charles Whitmore.""
I ended the call and immediately told Michael everything.
He looked troubled.
"If Charles has been sending money to Patricia, he may have information about the alleged inheritance.""
The next morning, Emily and I drove to San Antonio with Michael.
The meeting was scheduled at a quiet office building near downtown.
A receptionist led us into a private conference room.
An elderly man sat near the window.
His hair was white.
His hands trembled slightly.
But his eyes were sharp.
He stood when we entered.
"Emily.""
She approached him cautiously.
"Mr. Whitmore?""
He nodded.
Then he looked at me.
"And you must be Sarah.""
I shook his hand.
"Why did my father tell me to find you?""
Charles sighed.
"Because your father knew Patricia would eventually come after the inheritance.""
He sat down and opened a leather briefcase.
Inside were photographs, bank statements, and a thick envelope.
"I've been waiting twenty-five years for someone to ask the right questions.""
Michael leaned forward.
"Then let's start with the most important one. Why has Patricia been receiving money from you?""
Charles looked at me.
"Because I have been paying her to keep a secret.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"What secret?""
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
The father's name was clearly printed.
*Charles Edward Whitmore.*
The mother's name was Patricia Thompson.
And the child's name was Daniel Thompson.
I stared at the paper.
"Daniel is your son?""
Charles nodded.
"Yes.""
My mind raced.
"But why did Patricia marry Daniel's father?""
"Because she needed someone to raise the boy without revealing the truth. Daniel's legal father believed he was his biological child.""
Emily looked horrified.
"Does Daniel know?""
Charles shook his head.
"Not the full story.""
Then he placed another document on the table.
It was a letter from Patricia, dated just six months earlier.
Michael began reading.
His expression changed with every line.
Finally, he looked up.
"Mr. Whitmore, are you aware that Patricia has been trying to obtain control of the Thompson family trust?""
Charles nodded.
"That's why I stopped paying her.""
He turned toward me.
"Your father was the only person who knew the entire arrangement. He discovered that Patricia had been using Daniel to get access to your inheritance.""
I swallowed.
"Why?""
Charles leaned forward.
"Because she believes your grandfather stole something from her decades ago. And she has spent her entire life planning to take it back.""
He pushed the final document toward us.
It was a handwritten agreement.
At the bottom was Patricia's signature.
Beside it was a sentence that made Michael stand abruptly.
*Upon Daniel's marriage to Sarah Thompson, Patricia would receive control of the Whitmore family estate.*
I stared at the page.
My marriage had never been an accident.
And just as I began to understand the scale of Patricia's plan, Charles reached into his briefcase and removed one final photograph.
It showed Patricia holding a newborn baby.
But the baby wasn't Daniel.
It was Vanessa.
Charles looked directly at me.
"Sarah, there's something else. Daniel and Vanessa are not the only children Patricia has been hiding.""
He turned the photograph over.
May you like
Written on the back were two words.
*The third child.*
