Chapter 2: The Woman Who Helped Them Steal My Life

I didn't open the door.

Instead, I called the police non-emergency number and explained that two people were refusing to leave my property.

Daniel immediately began pounding harder.

"Sarah! Stop acting crazy!""

Patricia stood behind him, checking her phone.

"Daniel, just tell her we're here to help. She's always been dramatic.""

I watched from the security monitor as Daniel turned toward her.

"Mom, keep your voice down.""

"Why? She's my daughter-in-law. She needs to understand that this family has responsibilities.""

My family.

That phrase almost made me laugh.

For eight years, I had treated Patricia like my own mother.

I paid for her dental implants when her insurance refused coverage. I covered her property taxes twice. I bought her a new refrigerator after she complained that hers made strange noises.

And when Daniel told me his mother was struggling financially, I quietly arranged a monthly allowance.

Four hundred dollars.

Every month.

I had even paid for her birthday celebration because Daniel said she deserved one special evening.

Apparently, she believed that made me her personal bank account.

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

An officer knocked on the front door.

"Ma'am, are you safe inside?""

"Yes. They just need to leave.""

Daniel immediately changed his expression.

"Officer, this is a family misunderstanding. My wife is upset. We had an argument at my mother's birthday dinner.""

Patricia placed a hand against her chest.

"She's been under a lot of stress. We came to check on her.""

The officer looked through the window.

"Then you can check on her another time. Please leave the property.""

Daniel turned toward the camera.

His expression had changed completely.

"You're making a huge mistake, Sarah.""

I didn't answer.

I watched their car disappear down the street.

Then I called my best friend, Rachel.

She answered on the second ring.

"Sarah? It's after midnight. What's wrong?""

I tried to speak, but the words came out broken.

"Rachel, Daniel has another woman.""

Silence.

"What?""

"She's pregnant. He's been using my money. His mother helped him get into my safe. They're trying to take my father's house.""

Rachel didn't ask whether I was sure.

She simply said, "I'm coming over.""

Twenty-five minutes later, she was sitting across from me at the kitchen island, reading through the screenshots.

When she reached the photograph of Vanessa, she stopped.

"Wait.""

"What?""

Rachel zoomed in.

"Isn't this the woman from Daniel's company Christmas party?""

I looked closer.

I remembered her.

Vanessa had been introduced as a new marketing consultant. She had worn a red dress and spent most of the evening talking to Daniel.

At the time, I thought nothing of it.

Rachel shook her head.

"I remember her asking Daniel whether he was bringing his wife. He told her you were traveling.""

I stared at her.

"I was at home. I had the flu.""

Rachel put down the phone.

"Sarah, this is worse than an affair. They're building a financial operation around you.""

She was right.

We spent the next two hours organizing the evidence.

There were hotel reservations, restaurant receipts, jewelry purchases, bank transfers, and security recordings.

At 2:46 a.m., Rachel found something else.

A shared folder on my home computer contained scanned documents.

One file was named:

*SARAH_THOMPSON_FINAL_TRANSFER.pdf*

Inside was a deed transfer bearing my signature.

But there was also a second document.

A notarized statement claiming I had voluntarily granted Daniel authority over my financial and property affairs.

The document listed a notary named Elaine Brooks.

I had never met her.

Rachel looked at the date.

"Sarah, this was notarized six weeks ago.""

I leaned closer.

The address listed beneath the notary's name was a small office in Fort Worth.

Then I noticed a handwritten note attached to the scanned document.

Originals with Mom. Give Vanessa copy after approval.

I felt sick.

Patricia had been holding the documents because she was part of the arrangement.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A woman's voice came through.

"Sarah? My name is Vanessa.""

Rachel immediately raised her eyebrows.

I put the call on speaker.

"What do you want?""

Vanessa sighed.

"Look, I know this is uncomfortable, but Daniel said you two had an arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

"That you were separated emotionally. He said the marriage was basically over.""

I almost laughed.

"Interesting. He slept beside me every night.""

"Well, that's not what he told me.""

"Did he also tell you that he used my credit card to buy your jewelry?""

Silence.

"Sarah, I didn't know.""

"Did you know about the $15,000 deposit?""

Another silence.

Then she whispered, "I thought that was his money.""

I closed my eyes.

"Listen carefully, Vanessa. You are living in a house that my money helped finance. You are carrying a child with my husband. And apparently, you're listed as the beneficiary of a property transfer that I never authorized.""

Her voice became defensive.

"He said you were going to sign everything after the divorce.""

"Then why did he forge my signature?""

I heard her breathing change.

"What?""

"Why did he submit a document with my forged signature?""

Vanessa didn't answer.

Then I heard another voice in the background.

Daniel.

"Who are you talking to?""

The line went dead.

Rachel stared at me.

"He doesn't know you have the evidence.""

"Not yet.""

I opened my laptop again and downloaded the remaining documents.

Then an email notification appeared.

It was from Michael, my attorney.

*Subject: Urgent — Additional Information Regarding Property Transfer*

I opened it.

The message contained three attachments.

The first was the forged deed.

The second was the power of attorney.

The third was a copy of a loan application.

But it was the fourth page that made my heart stop.

The loan application wasn't for Vanessa's house alone.

It included my father's property, my primary residence, and my business assets.

The total requested amount was $1.2 million.

And Daniel had already listed himself as the authorized borrower.

Rachel leaned over my shoulder.

"Sarah, can he actually do that?""

"Not if I can prove the documents are fraudulent.""

Then I noticed a line near the bottom.

*Co-signing witness: Patricia Thompson.*

My mother-in-law hadn't merely known about the theft.

She had signed as a witness.

And beneath her signature was a handwritten note:

Sarah will cooperate. She doesn't want a public scandal.

I read it twice.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

We need to talk tomorrow. Mom has something important to tell you about your father's house.

A second message followed.

And Sarah, don't make Vanessa upset. She's pregnant.

I looked at Rachel.

For the first time that night, I felt completely calm.

"Tomorrow," I said, "I'm going to find out exactly how much of my life they've already stolen.""

But Michael's next email arrived before sunrise.

May you like

And its subject line was even more frightening.

*Your husband has scheduled a court hearing.*
