Chapter 5: My Father's Last Warning

I hadn't thought about the black box in almost three years.

It was small enough to fit in one hand, covered in dark leather, with a brass clasp on the front.

My father had given it to me during one of my final visits to his house.

"Keep this somewhere safe, sweetheart," he had said.

I remembered sitting beside his bed.

"What is it, Dad?""

"Something I should have told you a long time ago.""

He had looked toward the bedroom door.

Then he had lowered his voice.

"But not yet. You'll understand when the time comes.""

I had placed the box in my office safe and never opened it.

Now Daniel had stolen it.

I felt a sudden wave of panic.

"Michael, what's inside that box?""

He looked at me.

"I don't know. But if it contains anything related to your father's estate, we need to recover it.""

I opened the security application.

The footage showed Daniel removing the box and slipping it into his briefcase.

Patricia was waiting near the doorway.

"Did you get it?"" she asked.

Daniel nodded.

"Everything Dad left behind.""

Patricia smiled.

"Good. Vanessa needs the documents before Friday.""

I replayed the recording.

"Before Friday?""

Michael checked his calendar.

"That's two days from now.""

My phone buzzed.

Rachel.

I answered immediately.

"Sarah, I found something.""

"What?""

"Remember when Daniel asked you to help him organize your father's paperwork last year?""

I frowned.

"Yes.""

"I just remembered something. He took photographs of several documents while you were making coffee.""

I went still.

"Which documents?""

"Your father's property deed. His insurance information. And a letter from the bank.""

I sat down.

"Rachel, why didn't you tell me?""

"I didn't think anything of it. He said he was helping you prepare your taxes.""

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

"Did you see where he put the photographs?""

"No. But I remember him saying something about a safe deposit box.""

A safe deposit box.

My father had maintained one at a bank in Dallas for decades.

After his death, Robert Collins had given me the key.

I had never used it.

"Rachel, can you come with me to the bank?""

"Of course.""

Michael insisted on accompanying us.

At the bank, I presented my identification and the original estate documents.

The manager led us into a private room.

"Your father maintained this box for thirty-one years," she explained.

I inserted the key.

The lock clicked.

Inside were several envelopes, a small leather notebook, and a sealed letter with my name written across it.

My hands trembled.

I opened the letter.

My dearest Sarah,

If you're reading this, someone has tried to take something that belongs to you.

I stopped breathing.

The letter continued.

I know Daniel has been asking questions about my property. I know Patricia has been visiting my attorney. And I know they believe I don't understand what they're planning.

Rachel covered her mouth.

I continued reading.

I made mistakes in my life, sweetheart. One of them was trusting the wrong people. But I will not allow anyone to use your kindness against you.

There was another paragraph.

The house is yours. The business interests are yours. And there is one final asset that I have deliberately kept separate from the family.

I looked up.

Michael leaned forward.

The next lines were written in darker ink.

Daniel doesn't know about the original agreement. Patricia thinks she knows everything. Neither of them understands who actually controls the property.

I turned the page.

A legal document was attached.

It described a family investment trust established by my grandfather decades earlier.

My father had inherited a controlling interest in the trust, which held several commercial properties across Texas.

The estimated value was nearly $4.8 million.

I stared at the number.

"Michael?""

He took the document.

His eyes moved quickly across the pages.

Then he stopped.

"Sarah, this is significant.""

"What does it mean?""

"It means your father held assets that weren't part of the estate Daniel has been investigating.""

I looked at the trust agreement.

My name appeared as the designated successor beneficiary.

But there was another name listed.

Daniel Thompson.

As a temporary administrative contact.

I felt my blood run cold.

"Why is Daniel listed?""

Michael read the relevant paragraph.

"Your father apparently gave him limited authority to handle correspondence during a temporary period. Not ownership. Not control of the trust.""

"Can he use that to take anything?""

"Not without proper authorization. But we need to notify the trust administrator immediately.""

I turned to the leather notebook.

Inside were handwritten entries from my father.

Several pages contained dates, amounts, and names.

One entry stood out.

*November 14 — Daniel requested $75,000 for investment opportunity. Declined.*

Another:

*December 3 — Patricia asked about Sarah's inheritance. Told her nothing.*

Then I found a final entry.

*January 8 — Vanessa Miller contacted Daniel. They believe Sarah will inherit everything without restrictions. They are wrong.*

I stared at the page.

Vanessa.

My father had known her name.

Before he died.

Rachel whispered, "Sarah, what does that mean?""

I turned another page.

There was a photograph.

It showed Daniel and Vanessa standing together outside a restaurant.

The date was almost four years old.

Before Daniel and I had even celebrated our fourth wedding anniversary.

I felt the room tilt.

This wasn't a recent affair.

It had been happening for years.

Michael carefully placed the documents into a folder.

"We need to preserve all of this.""

Then the bank manager returned.

"Mrs. Thompson, there's one more item.""

She handed me a small envelope.

"Your father instructed us to release this only if you presented the original key and estate documents.""

I opened it.

Inside was a flash drive.

And a handwritten note.

Sarah, if Daniel has reached the point where he is trying to take your house, watch the recording on this drive. It explains why I never trusted him.

I looked at Michael.

"Can we watch it?""

He nodded.

We used his laptop.

The video opened with my father sitting in his living room.

He looked tired, but his eyes were clear.

"Sarah, my darling girl," he began.

"If you're watching this, then Daniel has probably done exactly what I feared.""

He took a deep breath.

"There is something I discovered about him. Something that happened long before he married you.""

Then he looked directly into the camera.

"And the person who helped him do it was someone you trusted with your entire childhood.""

The screen went black.

A second later, the recording resumed.

May you like

My father spoke one name.

"Patricia.""
