Chapter 6: The Secret My Father Took to His Grave

My father's voice filled the bank's private room.

"Sarah, I need you to understand that Patricia didn't enter our lives by accident.""

I stared at the screen.

Dad looked thinner than I remembered. His hands rested on the arms of his favorite leather chair.

He continued.

"Twenty-seven years ago, Patricia worked for a property management company that handled several buildings owned by your grandfather's investment trust.""

Michael leaned closer to the laptop.

"Your grandfather discovered irregularities in the accounts. Nearly $180,000 had disappeared over several months.""

My father's expression tightened.

"When the investigation began, Patricia resigned. But the money was never recovered.""

I looked at Michael.

"Are you saying my mother-in-law stole from my grandfather?""

My father answered before Michael could.

"She was never formally charged, because your grandfather decided to settle the matter privately. He didn't want the family's reputation destroyed.""

He paused.

"But he made one mistake. He believed she would stay away.""

My stomach tightened.

"Years later, Patricia met Daniel. At the time, he was working for a small financial services company. I didn't know their connection until after they started dating.""

I leaned toward the screen.

"Daniel was dating Patricia's daughter?""

My father nodded as if he could hear me.

"Yes. Vanessa.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

The woman my husband had been sleeping with wasn't a stranger he'd met through work.

She was his mother's daughter.

His half-sister.

Rachel grabbed my hand.

"Sarah...""

The recording continued.

"Daniel and Vanessa grew up together. They share the same mother. Patricia had Vanessa before she married Daniel's father.""

I couldn't move.

Daniel had married me while maintaining a relationship with his half-sister?

The thought was so horrifying that my mind refused to process it.

But my father wasn't finished.

"Your father-in-law knew about Patricia's earlier relationship and her daughter. He believed Daniel and Vanessa had grown apart. I believed him.""

Dad lowered his eyes.

"Then I discovered the truth.""

Michael paused the video.

"Sarah, we need to verify this before drawing conclusions.""

I nodded mechanically.

We played the recording again.

My father explained that he had discovered hotel receipts, financial transfers, and correspondence linking Daniel and Vanessa.

He had confronted Daniel privately.

Daniel had denied everything.

Then Patricia had visited my father.

"She told me Vanessa was simply receiving financial assistance. She insisted there was no inappropriate relationship.""

Dad shook his head.

"I didn't believe her.""

He leaned closer to the camera.

"Sarah, I didn't tell you because I didn't want to destroy your marriage without proof. I was also afraid Daniel would try to take advantage of your inheritance.""

I felt tears running down my cheeks.

"Why didn't you tell me, Dad?""

The video continued.

"After I became ill, I made a decision. I removed Daniel from every position of authority involving the family trust. I also placed additional protections around the properties.""

Michael immediately sat upright.

"That's important.""

My father continued.

"I appointed an independent trustee. Daniel cannot borrow against the trust, sell its assets, or transfer ownership.""

I wiped my face.

"Then why did he submit those documents?""

Michael answered quietly.

"Because he may be hoping the fraudulent paperwork will confuse the title company long enough to secure a loan.""

My father looked directly into the camera.

"There is one more thing, Sarah.""

He reached for an envelope.

"Patricia has been telling people that she was once married to your grandfather's business partner. That is true. What she doesn't tell them is that she signed an agreement releasing every claim against the family properties after their divorce.""

I frowned.

My grandfather's business partner?

Michael paused the video.

"Do you know who he means?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

He checked the trust papers.

Then his expression changed.

"Sarah, this agreement may explain why Patricia has been so interested in your inheritance.""

He pulled out another page.

The document showed that Patricia had once been married to a man named Charles Whitmore.

Charles had been my grandfather's closest business partner.

Their divorce settlement included a full release of claims against the investment company.

Patricia had received a substantial cash payment.

But she had no ownership rights over the trust.

Michael continued reading.

"Your grandfather apparently included a clause preventing former spouses from claiming future appreciation in the business.""

I stared at him.

"So Patricia couldn't get the money herself.""

"Correct.""

"And she wanted Daniel to marry me because I was the beneficiary?""

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, "We need to investigate that possibility.""

My father's recording resumed.

"Sarah, I know you love Daniel. But I need you to remember something. A person who loves you doesn't need to destroy your future to build their own.""

Dad took a long breath.

"There's a final envelope in the box. It contains the name of the person who helped Patricia access the original property records.""

The screen went black.

I immediately opened the remaining envelope.

Inside was a business card.

*Elaine Brooks — Notary Public and Estate Documentation Services.*

The same name that appeared on the forged power of attorney.

Behind the card was a handwritten note.

She was working for Patricia before Daniel ever met you.

I looked at Michael.

"She's the notary.""

"Or someone using her credentials.""

He picked up his phone.

"I'm contacting the state licensing authority and requesting an investigation.""

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A nervous female voice responded.

"Mrs. Thompson? My name is Elaine Brooks.""

I went completely still.

"How did you get my number?""

"I need to speak with you. It's about the documents your husband submitted.""

Michael immediately signaled for me to put the call on speaker.

"What about them?""

Elaine lowered her voice.

"I didn't notarize your signature.""

I exchanged a look with Michael.

"Then whose signature did you notarize?""

"Nobody. I never met you. Daniel brought me a document already signed and asked me to stamp it.""

"Why did you do that?""

She began crying.

"Patricia told me it was a family matter. She said you had already agreed and that the paperwork was just delayed.""

I gripped the edge of the table.

"Did you know the signature was forged?""

"No. Not at first.""

"Why are you calling me now?""

Elaine hesitated.

"Because Patricia came to my office this morning. She wanted me to backdate another document.""

Michael leaned toward the phone.

"What document?""

"A declaration stating that Sarah was mentally incapable of managing her assets when the original power of attorney was signed.""

My heart stopped.

"They're trying to make me look incompetent?""

"Yes.""

Elaine's voice cracked.

"And they want me to say I personally witnessed you signing it.""

Michael immediately identified himself and instructed her not to alter or destroy anything.

Elaine agreed to meet with him and provide the records.

I thought that was the end of the call.

Then she whispered something else.

"Mrs. Thompson, there's something you need to know about Vanessa.""

My stomach tightened.

"What?""

"She came to my office yesterday with Patricia. They were arguing about the money.""

"What money?""

Elaine took a shaky breath.

"Vanessa said Daniel had promised her the entire inheritance. But Patricia told her there was a problem.""

I leaned closer.

"What problem?""

Elaine answered in a whisper.

"Patricia said your father had changed the trust documents before he died.""

I looked at Michael.

"That's true.""

"No," Elaine replied.

"I mean something else. Patricia said the new documents name another beneficiary. Someone Daniel doesn't know about.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

Elaine hesitated.

Then she said:

"Your father's other daughter.""

The call disconnected.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

My father had never mentioned another daughter.

Not once.

And as Michael opened the trust agreement again, I noticed a second beneficiary section.

It had been sealed beneath a separate signature page.

The name was hidden.

May you like

But the date beside it was unmistakable.

*Three days before my father died.*
