Chapter 11: The Inheritance War

The letter was dated twenty-six years earlier.

My grandfather, Robert Thompson, had written it shortly before his death.

Michael read it silently.

Then he looked at Charles.

"Is this authentic?""

Charles nodded.

"I received a copy directly from your grandfather.""

Michael began reading aloud.

To whoever eventually discovers the truth,

I have spent too many years allowing Patricia to manipulate the people around her. I made a mistake by trusting her with financial responsibilities, and I refuse to let that mistake destroy another generation.

The money Patricia claims I stole was never hers.

It belonged to the company, and the accounting records prove that she diverted funds before resigning.

I stared at the letter.

Patricia's entire story about a stolen inheritance was apparently built on a lie.

My grandfather hadn't taken her money.

He had stopped her from taking his.

Michael continued.

I also know about Rebecca. I know about Vanessa. And I know that Patricia has been using the children to create financial claims against people who have never wronged her.

Emily whispered, "He knew everything.""

The final paragraph was underlined.

If my family ever faces this situation again, remember this: Patricia does not want an inheritance. She wants control. Once she has control, no one will be able to stop her.

I looked at Charles.

"Why didn't my grandfather report her?""

"Because he was trying to protect his business partner's family. He believed Patricia would eventually move on.""

"She didn't.""

"No," Charles said.

"She didn't.""

Michael placed the letter into an evidence folder.

"Sarah, we have enough to request an emergency injunction against any further transactions involving the disputed properties.""

He looked at Emily.

"And you have grounds to protect your beneficiary rights.""

For the first time in days, I felt that we were finally moving in the right direction.

But then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I considered ignoring it.

Instead, I answered.

"What?""

His voice sounded strained.

"Sarah, we need to meet.""

"No.""

"Please. It's important.""

"Everything important should be discussed through my attorney.""

He sighed.

"Mom has gone too far.""

I almost laughed.

"You're only realizing that now?""

"She lied to me.""

"About what?""

There was a pause.

"About the inheritance. About my father. About everything.""

I looked at Charles.

He was listening carefully.

Daniel continued.

"She told me I was going to inherit the Whitmore estate. She said if I married you, we'd eventually have access to your grandfather's properties.""

"And you believed her?""

"She showed me documents.""

"What documents?""

"Old agreements. Financial records. She said my biological father had arranged everything.""

I felt disgusted.

"So you stole from me because your mother promised you money?""

Daniel became defensive.

"I didn't steal anything. I was trying to secure our future.""

"Our future?""

"Sarah, please. I made mistakes.""

I closed my eyes.

"Did you love me when you married me?""

Silence.

Then he said, "Of course.""

"Did you love me when you started sleeping with Vanessa?""

He didn't answer.

"Did you love me when you used my credit card to buy her jewelry?""

"Sarah—"

"Did you love me when you forged my signature?""

His voice became louder.

"You're acting like I planned all of this!""

I looked at Michael.

He was shaking his head, silently telling me to keep the conversation calm.

"Daniel, I have one question.""

"What?""

"Where is the black box you took from my safe?""

He went quiet.

Then he whispered, "I don't have it.""

"Who does?""

Another pause.

"Mom.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What did she do with it?""

"I don't know.""

"Daniel, listen carefully. That box contains documents belonging to my father. If you or your mother destroys anything, I will make sure the authorities know exactly where it went.""

He breathed heavily.

Then he said something unexpected.

"Sarah, Mom is planning to leave the country.""

I froze.

"What?""

"She's been arranging something with an attorney in Mexico. She says once the trust money is transferred, she'll disappear.""

Michael immediately wrote that down.

"How much money?"" I asked.

"Eight hundred thousand.""

I looked at Michael.

He mouthed, Ask where.

"Where is the money supposed to go?""

Daniel hesitated.

"An account in the Cayman Islands.""

"And who owns it?""

"I don't know.""

I didn't believe him.

"You're telling me you don't know where your mother plans to put eight hundred thousand dollars?""

He sighed.

"Sarah, I swear I'm trying to help you.""

I almost laughed.

"You're trying to help yourself.""

Then I ended the call.

Michael immediately contacted the investigator handling the property fraud complaint.

He explained Daniel's warning and requested that the alleged offshore transfer be documented.

But we still needed to find the black box.

And we needed to stop Patricia from moving the money.

The next morning, Rebecca Collins arrived at Michael's office.

She was a tall woman in her forties with short brown hair and a leather briefcase.

She looked at Charles first.

Then Emily.

Finally, she looked at me.

"Which one of you is Sarah Thompson?""

I stood.

"That's me.""

She extended her hand.

"I'm Rebecca. And I believe we have a very serious problem.""

Michael introduced everyone.

Rebecca opened her briefcase.

Inside were documents showing her adoption records, her father's estate, and several old financial statements.

"I was contacted by Patricia three weeks ago," she explained.

"She offered me $500,000 to sign a release giving up any claim against the Whitmore estate.""

Emily frowned.

"Why would she do that?""

"Because she believes I have a right to the inheritance.""

Rebecca placed another document on the table.

It was a trust amendment.

The document listed three beneficiaries.

Emily Carter.

Rebecca Collins.

And Sarah Thompson.

But the percentages were different from what we had expected.

I owned the controlling share of the Thompson properties.

Emily and Rebecca held separate claims connected to the Whitmore estate.

Michael examined the document.

"Who prepared this?""

"Your former associate.""

He looked at her.

"Who?""

Rebecca turned the page.

A signature appeared at the bottom.

*Michael Reeves.*

The room went silent.

I looked at my attorney.

He had gone completely pale.

"That's impossible," he whispered.

May you like

Rebecca closed the folder.

"Then perhaps you should explain why your signature appears on an agreement transferring control of the trust.""
