Chapter 7: The Conversation They Never Wanted Us to Hear

The recording played again.

And somehow, hearing it a second time made it worse.

Margaret’s voice came first.

“She’s becoming a problem.””

Then Daniel’s father, Robert.

“She always has been.””

My husband sat completely still.

I watched the color drain from his face.

For years, Robert had been the calm one.

The reasonable one.

The person who apologized after Margaret crossed a line.

The person who told everyone, “That’s just how she is.””

But now his voice was coming through that recording.

Cold.

Calculated.

“She’s too attached to that child,” Margaret said.

Robert sighed.

“Then we make sure Daniel sees it.””

I leaned closer to the phone.

My heartbeat was pounding.

“Sees what?”” Daniel whispered.

The recording continued.

“She’s emotional,” Margaret said.

“Everyone knows it.””

Robert replied,

“People believe what they’re told. Especially when it comes from family.””

I felt sick.

They weren’t talking about a disagreement.

They were talking about destroying me.

Daniel paused the recording.

“No.””

His voice was barely audible.

I looked at him.

“Daniel.””

He shook his head.

“No.””

The denial wasn’t anger.

It was pain.

Because accepting the truth meant accepting that his parents had been manipulating him for years.

“They were trying to make me think you were unstable,” he said.

I didn’t answer.

Because I knew.

I had always known something felt wrong.

But hearing it out loud was different.

Daniel pressed play again.

Margaret’s voice returned.

“If Emma keeps fighting us, she’ll turn Lily against the family.””

Robert laughed quietly.

“Then maybe Lily needs a different environment.””

My stomach twisted.

Daniel immediately stopped the recording.

“No.””

This time he said it louder.

“No. Absolutely not.””

He stood up and started pacing.

“They were talking about taking Lily from us.””

I looked at him.

“Not taking her legally.””

His eyes met mine.

“Then what?””

I thought about Margaret dragging Lily.

The way she looked at her.

The way she spoke to her.

“They wanted control.””

Daniel ran both hands through his hair.

“My parents.””

The sadness in his voice hurt more than anger.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

It was his father.

For a moment, he just stared.

Then he answered.

“Dad.””

I could hear Robert’s voice through the speaker.

“Daniel, you need to understand something before you make a mistake.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“A mistake?””

“Your mother is upset. She’s embarrassed.””

“She pushed my daughter into a pool.””

A pause.

Then Robert said something that made my blood run cold.

“She didn’t mean for that to happen.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“You’re defending her.””

“I’m asking you to think rationally.””

“No. I’m asking you to tell me why you were talking about my wife and daughter like they were a problem.””

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

Robert finally spoke.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“Then explain it.””

Another pause.

Then Robert lowered his voice.

“Your wife has always made things difficult.””

Daniel looked at me.

I saw the hurt in his eyes.

Not because he believed it.

Because he couldn’t believe his own father was saying it.

“You know what’s difficult?”” Daniel said.

“What?””

“Finding out my parents were planning against my family.””

Robert sighed.

“Daniel—”

“No.””

My husband’s voice shook.

“You don’t get to call me and pretend this is normal.””

He ended the call.

For a few minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then Lily walked into the room.

She was holding her stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy?””

Daniel immediately knelt.

“Yeah, sweetheart?””

“Is Grandma mad at me?””

His face broke.

“No.””

He pulled her into his arms.

“None of this is your fault.””

Lily looked at me.

“Then why did she hate me?””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

Because six-year-olds weren’t supposed to ask questions like that.

I sat beside her.

“Some people don’t know how to show love the right way.””

Lily thought about that.

Then quietly said,

“She told me something else.””

Daniel looked up.

“What?””

Lily squeezed her rabbit.

“Before you came outside… Grandma told me Mommy and Daddy wouldn’t stay together forever.””

The room went cold.

“What exactly did she say?”” I asked.

Lily looked scared.

“She said if Mommy knew what was good for her, she would leave.””

Daniel and I looked at each other.

Because now we understood.

Margaret wasn’t just trying to hurt Lily.

She was trying to destroy our family from the inside.

But the worst part was still waiting.

The next morning, an unknown number called my phone.

I almost ignored it.

But when I answered, I heard a voice I never expected.

A woman crying.

“Emma…”

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“It’s someone who knows what Margaret did before you ever met her.””

I sat up.

“What are you talking about?””

May you like

Her voice dropped.

“She has done this before.””
