Chapter 11: The Night I Never Explained
Daniel came home an hour later.
He didn’t yell.
He didn’t accuse me.
That almost made it worse.
He just stood in the doorway.
Waiting.
I knew what he needed.
The truth.
So I told him.
“My ex’s name was Ryan.””
Daniel sat down.
“I know.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Your file mentioned him.””
I felt sick.
“They really researched everything.””
“Yes.””
I sat across from him.
“Ryan was controlling.””
Daniel listened quietly.
“He wasn’t always like that.””
That was the hardest part.
Because people like Ryan never showed their worst side immediately.
At first, he was charming.
Protective.
The kind of person who made you believe you were lucky to have him.
Then slowly, things changed.
He questioned my friends.
My clothes.
My decisions.
Every part of my life became something he wanted to control.
“When I finally left, he didn’t accept it.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“What did he do?””
“He followed me.””
The room became silent.
“He showed up at my apartment. He called constantly. He said if he couldn’t have me, nobody would.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I wanted that part of my life gone.””
I looked down.
“I didn’t want to be someone’s damaged person.””
Daniel’s expression softened.
“You weren’t.””
A tear fell.
“I know that now.””
I continued.
“One night, he came to my apartment.””
Daniel sat straighter.
“What happened?””
“I told him I was calling the police.””
My hands trembled remembering it.
“He got angry.””
“How angry?””
“He grabbed my arm.””
Daniel looked furious.
“But you got away?””
I nodded.
“My neighbor heard us arguing and came outside.””
“What happened to Ryan?””
I looked at the floor.
“That night, he left.””
“And?””
“I never saw him again.””
Daniel was quiet.
Then he asked,
“What did your parents know?””
“My mother knew.””
“And his disappearance?””
I swallowed.
“She told me not to talk about it.””
“Why?””
“Because Ryan had threatened to destroy my reputation.””
Daniel looked confused.
“But he disappeared.””
“Yes.””
“Where did he go?””
“I don’t know.””
That was the truth.
At least, I thought it was.
Then Daniel opened the file again.
He scrolled through pages.
Suddenly, his face changed.
“Emma.””
“What?””
He turned the laptop toward me.
There was a page titled:
RYAN CARTER.
Below it were notes.
My hands went cold.
“Why do they have this?””
Daniel kept scrolling.
“Because they found him.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“There are recent notes.””
I grabbed the laptop.
The last entry was dated two months earlier.
“Subject has re-established contact.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“Subject?””
Daniel looked at me.
“They were monitoring him.””
Then another line appeared.
“Plan remains unchanged.””
I looked up.
“What plan?””
Neither of us spoke.
Because we both knew.
There was only one reason someone would track Ryan.
Only one reason Margaret and Robert would keep a file on him.
They weren’t protecting me.
They were using him.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Daniel and I stared at it.
Then I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
A voice I hadn’t heard in years.
“Emma.””
I froze.
“Ryan?””
A quiet laugh.
“Yes.””
My blood ran cold.
“How do you have my number?””
A pause.
Then he said,
“Because your husband’s parents gave it to me.””
Daniel stood up.
“What?””
Ryan continued.
“They said you destroyed my life.””
I couldn’t move.
“They said Daniel needed to know who you really were.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Ryan…”
He interrupted.
“You want the truth?””
I said nothing.
He whispered,
May you like
“I know what Margaret is planning.””
Then the line went dead.
