Chapter 3: The Recording That Changed Everything

Nobody moved.

The video continued playing.

The phone speaker was small, but Margaret’s voice was clear enough for everyone standing around the patio to hear.

“You’re just like your mother,” Margaret said.

Lily’s voice trembled.

“What does that mean?””

“It means you think the world should revolve around you.””

“I don’t.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Lily whispered,

“I want Mommy.””

Margaret laughed.

Not loudly.

Not wildly.

A quiet laugh.

The kind that made my skin crawl.

“You always run to her. You know what your problem is?””

“What?””

“You make Daniel choose between his real family and you.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Stop the video.””

But nobody touched the phone.

Nobody could.

Because we all needed to hear the truth.

Margaret’s voice continued.

“Your mother came into this family and changed everything.””

Lily started crying.

“Don’t say bad things about Mommy.””

And then came the sentence that made me cover my mouth.

“You should be grateful I put up with you.””

Rachel gasped.

Daniel looked like he couldn’t breathe.

The video ended with Lily saying,

“Grandma, stop. You’re hurting me.””

Then the sound of footsteps.

Then my scream.

Silence returned.

Margaret looked around.

Nobody was defending her anymore.

Nobody was making excuses.

She looked at Daniel.

“Are you really going to believe a child over your own mother?””

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

That hurt her more than anything.

Because for once, she wasn’t the most important person in the room.

“You lied to me,” Daniel finally said.

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“I was trying to teach her.””

“You hurt her.””

“I did not push her!””

I stepped forward.

“You did.””

Margaret turned toward me.

“You attacked me.””

Everyone looked confused.

Then I realized what she was doing.

She was changing the story.

“She kicked me into the pool,” Margaret announced.

Daniel looked at me.

And there it was.

The question I knew he was afraid to ask.

“What happened after Lily fell?””

My throat tightened.

Because the truth was complicated.

I had pushed Margaret.

I had reacted without thinking.

I had watched her stand there after nearly drowning my daughter and something in me snapped.

“I pushed her,” I admitted.

Everyone went quiet.

Margaret smiled.

A small victory.

“See?””

But I continued.

“After she pushed Lily into the pool.””

The smile disappeared.

“I didn’t know if she was going to hurt my child again.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

The truth was ugly.

But it was the truth.

A siren sounded in the distance.

Someone must have called emergency services.

Margaret’s expression changed.

“You called the police?””

Rachel answered.

“I did.””

Margaret looked betrayed.

“After everything I’ve done for this family?””

Daniel stared at her.

“Mom, what you did today wasn’t discipline.””

His voice cracked.

“It was dangerous.””

For the first time, Margaret looked genuinely scared.

Not because she regretted hurting Lily.

Because she was losing control.

As the officers entered the backyard, Margaret suddenly looked directly at Lily.

And she said something so strange that my entire body went cold.

“You really should have checked what else was on that phone.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret smiled faintly.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“There’s something your wife never told you.””

Daniel turned toward me.

My heart stopped.

Because I had no idea what Margaret was talking about.

But judging by the fear in her eyes…

May you like

She wasn’t making a threat.

She was revealing a secret.
