Chapter 14: The Truth About Lily’s Birth

Daniel looked at me.

Not accusing.

Not angry.

Just waiting.

And somehow that was harder.

Because there was one memory I had buried so deeply that I almost convinced myself it didn’t matter anymore.

The day Lily was born.

The happiest day of my life.

And the most painful.

“Emma.””

I sat down.

“I need to tell you something.””

Daniel stayed quiet.

I took a deep breath.

“When Lily was born, your mother wasn’t there.””

He frowned.

“She was.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She came later.””

Daniel looked confused.

“I thought she visited the hospital.””

“She did.””

I swallowed.

“But she came after something happened.””

“What happened?””

I looked down at my hands.

“Lily was born early.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

“But there were complications.””

His expression softened.

“I remember.””

I nodded.

“You were outside talking to the doctors.””

Daniel went still.

“Okay.””

“And your mother was with me.””

The room became quiet.

“She told me something.””

“What?””

I closed my eyes.

“She said Lily was lucky.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Lucky?””

“Because if something happened to me, she could raise her.””

His face changed.

“What?””

I continued.

“She said you needed someone experienced. Someone who knew what was best.””

Daniel stared at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you were holding Lily in your arms.””

My voice broke.

“You were so happy.””

I wiped my eyes.

“I didn’t want to ruin that moment.””

Daniel looked devastated.

“She said that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

I looked at him.

“Because she always believed Lily belonged to her.””

That night, we sat in silence.

Not because we had nothing to say.

Because there was too much.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

It was Mr. Harris.

He sounded urgent.

“You need to come here.””

“What happened?””

“We found the missing files.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

“At Robert and Margaret’s attorney’s office.””

Daniel stood.

“How?””

“Their lawyer contacted me.””

“Why?””

A pause.

Then Mr. Harris said,

“Because he realized what they were planning and he doesn’t want to be involved.””

We arrived twenty minutes later.

The lawyer placed a box on the table.

“I represented your parents for years,” he said.

Daniel looked at him.

“And now?””

The man sighed.

“Now I realize I was helping them manipulate people.””

Inside the box were more files.

More names.

More victims.

Michael.

Claire.

Me.

And one more.

Daniel.

The lawyer pointed to the folder.

“This one was created before your wedding.””

Daniel opened it.

The first page made him freeze.

“Subject: Daniel.””

I watched him read.

His expression changed with every line.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He handed it to me.

The notes weren’t about me.

They were about him.

“Daniel is highly influenced by emotional pressure.””

“Daniel seeks approval from authority figures.””

“Daniel can be redirected if guilt is applied.””

I looked up.

“They studied you.””

Daniel whispered,

“They were controlling me.””

The lawyer nodded.

“They wanted you dependent on them.””

Then he pulled out another document.

“This is the most important one.””

It was a signed agreement.

My eyes scanned the page.

And then I saw the words.

Temporary guardianship.

My heart stopped.

“They planned this?””

The lawyer nodded.

“They prepared documents to request custody of Lily.””

Daniel grabbed the paper.

“When?””

The lawyer looked at the date.

“Two weeks before the barbecue.””

Two weeks.

Before Margaret hurt Lily.

Before the pool.

Before anyone knew.

It had already been planned.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A photo appeared.

It was Margaret.

Standing outside our house.

The caption said:

“You should have stayed quiet.””

I looked outside.

The driveway was empty.

May you like

But then another message came.

“Because now you’ll know what I’m really capable of.””
